Using Press Releases to Help Build Your Business Advertising and public relations are proven and cost-effective ways to increase awareness of your company and its services in your community. While advertising is paid for space in the media, public relations is based on news and relationships with local editors and reporters. One way to begin building relationships with key media contacts in your area is to distribute press releases to them when you have newsworthy information to share with your community. As an Authorized Operator of the Sentricon Termite Colony Elimination System, you have many newsworthy stories to tell that may pique the interest of the media. What you know about termites and use of the Sentricon System to eliminate them might seem everyday, but to reporters and consumers it s interesting information. Several press releases are available from Dow AgroSciences for your use. Here is some helpful information on distributing press releases that provide relevant, credible and newsworthy information to your community through your local newspapers and other media outlets. All you need to do is retype these news releases with your company information inserted where indicated (or contact your Dow AgroSciences sales representative for an electronic copy) and distribute them on your letterhead to local publications and media outlets. Begin by researching your local daily and weekly newspapers to determine which editor might be most interested in your information depending on the news you have to share (i.e., news editor, features editor, community editor, home editor, etc.). If your particular story is a visual one (i.e., local home with bad termite problem that has active termites and visible damage), you might consider contacting broadcast news media as well. For television, you usually should fax and your cover letter and news release to the news assignment editor. Morning and noon news broadcasts may be more likely to be interested in your news story. Send the press release to local media contacts via . It will allow your information to be seen in a timelier manner. Include a brief introduction explaining why the news you have to share is relevant to the local community, and be sure to personalize the information (i.e., Joe Smith, News Editor XYZ Times). Follow up after you send the press release with one or more phone calls asking the editors if they received your release and if they are interested in printing or broadcasting the information. 2

Be aware: Editors work under very tight deadlines. That means you may not be able to reach them directly. In that case, leave a BRIEF message asking them if they received the release and provide a phone number where they may reach you for additional information. When you do reach editors, keep it short and to the point to make the most of their time. Please remember, sending a press release and following up with an editor does not automatically guarantee your story will appear. Don t give up! Keep in contact with your local editors and provide them with relevant, newsworthy information about your company and local pest management issues throughout the year. A few key points to remember when trying to catch the media s eye include the following: Media outlets such as television and newspapers appreciate visuals of live termites and visible termite damage to show their audiences the compelling destruction caused by termites. Donating your services to a well-known site can attract the media s attention for a community service story. Historical landmarks and newsworthy sites such as museums, zoos, schools and daycare centers also can interest the media. Trademark of Dow AgroSciences LLC Always read and follow label directions. 3

Getting Comfortable With Media Outreach Why Media Relations are Important Opportunity to get your message out in a credible way Puts a face on your company Increases awareness and interest in your company and the Sentricon Termite Colony Elimination System brand Helps position you as a local pest management expert Reinforces preference for your company with current customers What the Media Want and Why Support for your story they especially like analogies and real-life examples to better relate to the audience Information/visual story that interests/grows their audience; they are not interested in promoting your company or product A lead for their story (an interesting angle) to capture audience attention Media generally are interested in three aspects of a story: Conflict and controversy (problem and solution) News you can use how the audience can improve its quality of life Innovation what s new? 4

USE COMPANY LETTERHEAD Contact: ADD: Business Name ADD: Person s Name ADD: Phone number ADD: Address FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Local Pest Control Company Joins Elite Group of Professionals (ADD: Business name) now a SENTRICON System authorized company ADD: CITY, State ADD: DATE (ADD: Business name) recently joined a select group of pest management companies authorized to provide consumers with the No. 1 brand in termite protection 1 the SENTRICON Termite Colony Elimination System. To become certified as an Authorized Operator of the SENTRICON System, a qualifying company is required to complete comprehensive and ongoing training, use state-of-the-art data management and gathering tools, and pass annual quality reviews. The SENTRICON System is an award-winning baiting system that detects and stops subterranean termites from attacking homes by eliminating entire termite colonies not just individual termites. The product s design allows termite infestations to be eliminated without disturbing expensive landscaping, or drilling holes into a home s floors, foundation, patios or sidewalks. Providing quality products and superb service are the two most important things to our company, says Dave Maurer, marketing specialist for Dow AgroSciences, manufacturer of the SENTRICON System. (ADD Business name) shares our commitment to those standards. ADD: Quote from company owner/manager about the company. The SENTRICON System is the only termite control product ever to receive the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award, which recognizes technical innovation that incorporates the principles of green chemistry into design, manufacture and use. In 2010, the SENTRICON System celebrated its 15 th year of 6

commercial use, and also introduced the innovative ALWAYS ACTIVE technology, which begins the termite colony elimination process without delay and offers continuous property protection from termites. 8 USE COMPANY LETTERHEAD Contact: ADD: Business Name ADD: Person s Name ADD: Phone number ADD: Address FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Better Bait Means Better Termite Control ADD: CITY, State ADD: DATE Termites love wood, so discovering a bait they love even more has Authorized Operators of the SENTRICON Termite Colony Elimination System, like [Insert company name] excited. In side-by-side tests where termites could choose between wood or the new revolutionary bait, termites readily preferred the bait. And termites like the bait even more if it ages, cracks or gets moldy. You could say that termites think bait that looks disgusting is delicious, says [insert company representative, title]. In fact, we ve trained our service technicians to make sure they don t remove aged bait if it looks gross. The idea behind the new bait technology was to create a long-lasting bait material that could stand up to the elements in the underground bait stations where termites will feed on it. Researchers at Dow AgroSciences developed a patent-pending cellulose-based bait formulation that in real-world tests has remained effective for multiple years. The bait performs even better than researchers hoped, standing up to hot, cold, wet and dry conditions. If mold forms on the bait, so much the better. And if the bait cracks, termites use the crevices as good places to start feeding. The bait, a part of the new SENTRICON System with ALWAYS ACTIVE technology, protects homes when it is placed inside SENTRICON stations placed around the perimeter of the home. Termites discover the bait, feed on it and then deliver its slow-acting chemistry to the termite colony. The active ingredient in the bait, noviflumuron, disrupts termite molting, eliminating the entire termite colony. After 8

reviewing bait performance, federal regulatory officials granted an industry-first termite bait label that allows servicing at up to an annual interval, and acceptance of the label by state regulatory agencies followed. Consumer research shows that homeowners see extra value in having bait constantly in the ground, where it is always available to protect against subterranean termite attack. Homeowners also like the environmentally responsible 1 aspects of termite bait protection. Authorized service companies say the SENTRICON System with ALWAYS ACTIVE technology lets them offer proven colony elimination 2 to homeowners while giving their companies maximum flexibility on scheduling service. Easy home protection Research to improve termite protection is necessary. Even after decades of research, subterranean termites still cost American homeowners an estimated $5 billion annually. 3 Termites are found in every state but Alaska. Colonies can number from the thousands into the millions. Termites feed 24/7 and are undetected unless an expert inspector finds them, physical damage becomes self-evident or the termite colony becomes large enough to produce winged swarmer termites, which fly out from the colony seasonally to create new colonies. Routine termite control attempts a blocking method applying hundreds of gallons of insecticide into soil to create a barrier around and beneath the home to either repel termites or kill them as they try to get to the wood in the home. The easier way to protect a home is to simply eliminate the termite problem altogether by using an advanced bait material. Used by trained and authorized service companies, the SENTRICON System enlists the foraging worker termites to carry the bait material back to feed it to the termite colony, which is hidden underground, sometimes hundreds of feet away. A series of SENTRICON System stations, usually placed about 10 feet apart, contain enough bait to control multiple termite colonies. SENTRICON stations are then serviced once or more per year, and any bait device that is more than one-third consumed is replaced with a new one. 9

Our research has proven that the SENTRICON System with ALWAYS ACTIVE technology eliminates entire termite colonies, says Michelle Smith, a researcher with Dow AgroSciences. To do this, we tested the bait in university studies and real-world use on homes in all regions and against multiple species of subterranean termites. Our research involved use of DNA fingerprinting to identify specific termite colonies feeding on the bait so that we could document entire elimination of those colonies. It was common to find multiple colonies around a home, and DNA fingerprinting showed that 18 different termite colonies were active around one home. Homes can be attacked by multiple termite colonies at once, and they can be attacked by successive colonies. The research shows that having continuously baited stations around a home can be a real advantage to protect it. For more information about the SENTRICON System with ALWAYS ACTIVE technology, contact ADD company name, phone number and website. 1The Sentricon System is designed to prevent environmental exposure, and can be removed if desired. 2As shown by 30 independent university studies and 70 published scientific articles. 3National Pest Management Association Trademark of Dow AgroSciences LLC Always read and follow label directions. 10

USE COMPANY LETTERHEAD Contact: ADD: Business Name ADD: Person s Name ADD: Phone number ADD: Address FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Swarmer Alert! Subterranean Termites are Swarming in [Insert State] ADD: CITY, State ADD: DATE Attention! Subterranean termites have been spotted swarming in many areas of [insert state name]. Termite swarms occur when winged reproductive termites leave an established termite colony to mate and form new colonies. They pose an alarming reminder that termite colonies are in the structure or surrounding areas, looking for new places to feed and thrive. Annually, termites cost an estimated $5 billion in property damage in the United States. 1 Swarmers alert homeowners to a potentially serious problem, says [insert company representative, title, company name]. They signal that a termite colony is attempting to spread and establish new colonies. Each one of those colonies will swarm again and keep multiplying. It is very important to eliminate the problem as soon as possible to minimize damage. What do you do when swarmers are spotted? Consider it a warning that a subterranean termite problem may exist somewhere in the structure, especially if the swarm occurred indoors, and get help, says [insert company spokesperson s last name]. We are excited to offer a long-term solution that actually eliminates the entire termite colony from the structure, the SENTRICON System. The SENTRICON Termite Colony Elimination System is an innovative technology for protecting structures from termites that requires the use of a termite bait only when and where termites are present. When customers experience termite infestations, they are concerned enough without having to be 11

inconvenienced by the process of conventional liquid termiticide treatments, says [insert company representative s last name]. How it works First, a pest management professional installs SENTRICON stations in the ground around the outside perimeter of the home. The SENTRICON stations, which lie flush with the ground and are secured with a locking cap, contain monitoring devices and are checked periodically for termites by an authorized technician. When termites are detected, special bait for eliminating termites is placed in only those SENTRICON stations with termite activity. The termites immediately establish the bait as a food source and encourage nestmates to feed on the bait, eventually resulting in entire termite colony elimination. The termite bait is in the ground only when and where termites are present in the SENTRICON stations, and only a small amount is required for entire termite colony elimination. Once a termite colony has been eliminated, the bait is replaced with wood-monitoring devices, and the pest management professional regularly monitors the SENTRICON stations for new termite colonies that may invade the property. SENTRICON is also less disruptive to our customers because monitoring and baiting are typically performed entirely outside the home. This is the most significant termite control development the pest management industry has seen in 50 years, says [insert company representative s last name]. [Insert company name] is authorized to sell the SENTRICON System and its technicians have received extensive training from the manufacturer on proper use of the SENTRICON System, as well as advanced termite biology and identification. For more information about the SENTRICON System, contact [insert company name] at [insert phone number], or visit our website at [insert company s website] or 1National Pest Management Association Trademark of Dow AgroSciences LLC Always read and follow label directions. 12

USE COMPANY LETTERHEAD Contact: ADD: Business Name ADD: Person s Name ADD: Phone number ADD: Address FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Termites Pose Big Trouble for Homeowners ADD: CITY, State ADD: DATE People worry about the possibility of a fire or severe weather destroying their home, spending an estimated $500 million each year for homeowners insurance. Yet, studies indicate damage from subterranean termites is far more likely, especially in [insert state]. This year alone, more than 5 million homes in the United States will be damaged by subterranean termite infestations 1 and homeowners will face an estimated $5 billion in property damage. 2 In [insert state], structural damage from subterranean termites is a potentially serious problem, says [insert company spokesperson, title]. If you discover you have a termite problem, it s best to seek help immediately and call your local pest management company. Solutions There are few options to consider when choosing how to treat your subterranean termite problem, says [insert last name of company spokesperson]. At [company name], we offer an innovative solution that actually eliminates entire termite colonies from the site and protects the structure from subterranean termites for years to come the SENTRICON System. The SENTRICON Termite Colony Elimination System is a revolutionary termite baiting technology that provides ongoing structural protection from termites using a termite bait only when and where termites are present. 13

When customers experience termite infestations in their home, the most important thing to them is getting rid of the problem. Yet, they also want a solution that will protect their home in the future, says [insert last name of company spokesperson]. The SENTRICON System does both, offering entire termite colony elimination and ongoing, long-term structural protection. It s the only termite protection their house will ever need. How it works First, a pest management professional installs the SENTRICON System in the ground around the outside perimeter of the property. The SENTRICON stations, which lie flush with the ground and contain monitoring devices, are checked regularly for termites by an authorized technician. When termites are detected, special bait for eliminating them is secured only in those SENTRICON stations with termite activity. On Your Own Suggestions for Additional Newsworthy Press Releases The news releases provided are just the beginning for your media relations efforts. Many other opportunities to provide information to the news media are available. When you have news to share, ask yourself if it s the type of information you ve seen in the news media before and where you may have seen it. Then send your information to the media contacts who would be most interested in the type of story you have to tell. For instance, information on signs of termite trouble and how to prevent them may interest a home and garden editor. A story about a local site of significance you are treating with the Sentricon System that had a terrible termite problem may interest a city editor or local broadcast media. News of employee promotions or an award your company won usually is picked up by weekly community newspapers. Whatever the topic, be sure to provide information that answers the questions Who?, What?, When?, Where?, Why? and How? Below are some suggestions for news releases you may want to try on your own.
