2 Developing an Oracle OLAP Reference Architecture Data access pattern of a typical OnLine Analytical Processing (OLAP) system is mostly sequential. The OLAP systems are deployed predominantly to develop Business Intelligence (BI) and Decision Support applications. The typical characteristic of an OLAP system is a read intensive and large block size IO operations. The power, scalability, and effectiveness of an OLAP system can be determined based on the following characteristics: Server computing power Server memory foot print Server PCIE slots Storage throughput performance Query response times 2.1 Design Goals This paper discusses the design and development of OLAP reference architecture with PowerEdge R920 and Dell Compellent Flash-optimized array. The primary goal of this effort is to characterize the benefits of using the PowerEdge R920 and Compellent Flash-optimized array when compared to the Compellent array with spinning HDDs. This offers a cost effective solution, without compromising on performance and business requirements. 6 Accelerating Oracle OLAP with Dell Infrastructure

2.3 What is Dell Complellent Flash Optimized Storage? Dell Compellent storage is based on Fluid data architecture powered by dynamic block architecture and offers a true enterprise class virtualized storage that offers features beyond traditional storage capabilities. Dell Compellent is designed to be intelligent enough to take automated decisions in optimal data placement across different class of hard drives. Salient Features of Dell Complellent Storage True Thin provisioning Dynamic Capacity Fast Track Tiered storage Data Progression Data Instant Replay With the increasing need of high performance in business applications, there is a need for power packed hardware infrastructure in datacenters. With the advent mute core processors server architecture and virtualization, computation power in datacenter has taken huge leaps and is now able to satisfy business needs to some extent. But there is not much of progress in storage power and customers mostly believe in deploying spinning HDDs in storage enclosures. Storages based on flash disks are subtle options that can match server power. Traditionally, flash disks come in lower capacities and higher cost. Essentially customers have to spend more and they get very less storage space. Hence there is a resistance from industry in widely adopting flash storages. Dell invented Compellent Flash optimized storage built on core fluid data architecture that changed economics of flash storage and has made flash storage affordable to customers. Dell designed storage that can offer Flash performance, at the price of spinning HDD. Flash drives supported by Dell Compellent are: Read-Intensive or MLC (Multi Layered cell) SSD: These drives are best fit for read operations. Write-Intensive or SLC (Single Layered Cell) SSD: These drives are optimized for write operations and are higher performing as compared to RI SSD. This performance comes at the cost of higher price as compared to RI SSDs Why Dell Compellent Flash Optimized Storage? Typical OLAP deployments require huge capacity (multiple TBs) and higher throughput. Essentially OLAP systems need a storage that is capacity rich and performance packed. Additionally storage performance has to match and compliment server performance capabilities. Traditionally 15k RPM drives have been the predominant choice for OLAP systems. In order to satisfy capacity and performance requirements customers tend to deploy more 15k drives, which can be in the 10 Accelerating Oracle OLAP with Dell Infrastructure

order of few hundreds. As a result, there is great mismatch in capacities and performance delivered. Moreover, these huge deployments are power hungry monsters and definitely not environment friendly. Though a number of all flash solutions are available in the market. These solutions are not greatly adopted by customers as they are typically very expensive and may not satisfy the capacity requirements. Dell has introduced radical and innovative Compellent Flash Optimized storage array. This addresses both capacity and performance needs of customers. Dell Compellent Flash-optimized solution Delivers high performance Eliminates overprovisioning Delivers cost effective performance compared to other flash offerings Compellent Flash Optimization The Compellent Storage Center 6.4 (SC 6.4) release builds on the robust storage virtualization foundation of the Dell Compellent Fluid Data Architecture. The core features that enable Dell Compellent to deliver cost effective high performance are: Flash Aware Data Progression: Traditional Data Progression algorithms run only once each day to optimize RAID levels and data tiering. In comparison, Flash-optimized Data Progression moves data across tiers throughout the day. Data that has recently been frozen in a replay (snapshot) is now read-only and is a good example of data that can be moved to a read-intensive tier of storage. This is all handled in the background with little to no impact to the host. By moving the data to a RAID level and storage media that has exceptional read I/O performance characteristics (space efficient RAID-5 and inexpensive MLC SSDs), the cost of storing the read only data is significantly reduced. Figure 2-5 Compellent Data Progression Flash Aware Storage Profiles: Storage radically simplifies tiering policy management. By assigning a storage profile to a volume, the volume inherits the tiering attributes defined in the storage 11 Accelerating Oracle OLAP with Dell Infrastructure

profile. Storage Center 6.4 has added two new profiles in order to place data on the most appropriate types of drives, Flash Optimized and cost-optimized storage profiles. A Flash Optimized storage profile directs all writes to high-performance Tier 1 storage (SLC SSDs in RAID- 10,). On-demand Data Progression automatically converts replay and read-intensive data to RAID- 5 and places it on Tier 2 (read-intensive flash storage that has exceptional read performance characteristics). A cost-optimized storage profile allows the administrator to create a volume for applications such as backup, archive, and low priority applications. The new storage profiles simplify tiering management enabling storage administrators to assign flash storage to the most active data, while retaining the flexibility of cost-efficiently storing cold data in a more cost effective tier. Proactive WI SSD Space Management: The compellent architecture directs all writes to high performance Tier 1 storage. Hence, it is very important that Tier 1 is used judiciously to ensure that sufficient space is always available for incoming host writes. Enhancements in Storage Center 6.4 proactively create space management replays to move data to Tier 2, which is triggered automatically when Tier 1 space consumption exceeds predefined thresholds. Management and Monitoring: Compellent Storage Center monitoring tools have been enhanced with the ability to monitor wear on any SSD in the array. Additionally, since the flash storage will yield dramatic reduction in I/O latencies, Dell Compellent Enterprise Manager and Storage Center user interfaces now report sub-millisecond latencies to provide a more precise view of flash storage performance. The combined effect of all these changes is illustrated in Figure 3 below. Compared to traditional tiered storage architectures, the enhancements in Storage Center 6.4 significantly improve the average performance of the system. The low cost and high densities of the Read-Intensive SSDs contribute to increasing the usable SSD capacity without increasing the cost of the solution. 12 Accelerating Oracle OLAP with Dell Infrastructure

Figure 2-6 Traditional Tiering Vs. Compellent Flash-Optimized Solution Storage design goal for this reference architecture is to demonstrate that the Compellent Flash-optimized solution eliminates the pain points associated with traditional approaches. Dell Compellent Flash solution value for OLAP deployments has been studied and analyzed by series of performance tests explained in following sections. 2.4 Test Methodology The test methodology employed for this effort compares the throughput performance of two Compellent based storage solutions with similar cost characteristics. One solution deploys high performance 15k HDDs which is compared to a flash optimized configuration. The test begins with a flash optimized configuration consisting of 6x400G Write-Intensive SSD s + 6x1.6TB Read-Intensive SSD s. This configuration costs equivalent to a homogeneous spinning HDD configuration consisting of 72x146G 15k RPM SAS drives. 13 Accelerating Oracle OLAP with Dell Infrastructure

Figure 2-7 HDD vs. SSD system The testing was performed in three phases. ORION I/O Profiling: In the first phase, a series of tests were executed using the Oracle I/O Calibration Tool (ORION) 1. ORION uses the Oracle I/O software stack to generate simulated I/O workloads without having to create an Oracle database, load application, and simulate users. ORION is commonly used for benchmarking the I/O performance characteristics of Oracle database storage systems. These tests were focused on measuring the storage I/O performance and system limits for pure OLAP workloads. Real World TPC-H style sequential workload: In the second phase, Quest Benchmark Factory 2 for databases was used to simulate a real TPC-H style workload. The workload was tested on a two node Oracle 12cR1 RAC database to characterize the maximum Throughput Per Second (MBPS) capability of two Compellent storage based solutions. Performance testing is done against an OLAP deployment of 2TB database. Storage Scalability: In the third phase, real world TPC-H style sequential workload was tested with 24 SSDs (12x400G Write-Intensive SSD s + 12x1.6TB Read-Intensive SSDs) Accelerating Oracle OLAP with Dell Infrastructure

3 Results and Analysis 3.1 ORION I/O Profiling The ORION tool was used to simulate synthetic OLAP workload. ORION tool creates raw IO stress on the devices presented to the tool. The goal of the test was to measure the maximum throughput (MBPS) capability of the two storage based solutions - HDD based configuration and the Flash-optimized configuration. The MBPS observed on the two configurations are shown below: Figure 3-1 Flash Vs. HDD: Comparing OLAP ORION MBPS ORION Throughput R920 + Compellent with Flash drives R920 + Compellent with 15k drives Throughput (MBPS) Large Sequential IO 3.2 TPC-H style workload analysis To simulate real world OLAP system TPC-H style workload is chosen. TPC-H workload simulates large sequential read operations. In this workload huge amount of data is scanned and processed to get the end result that is used for BI or Decision Support purposes. In order to serve OLAP workloads, storage should have higher throughput capabilities and faster access to deliver better query response times. The primary goal of this stress testing is to identify value that Compellent Flash array brings in as compared to Compellent array based on spinning HDDs. The results from the tests are tabulated below: Configuration Max Throughput MBPS Avg. TPC-H workload is tested against 24 drives (12 x RI SSD + 12 x WI SSD). The results from the test are as below: 16 Accelerating Oracle OLAP with Dell Infrastructure

4 Conclusion Dell Infrastructure for OLAP discussed in this paper stands out distinct compared other solutions in market. This solution adopts a balanced approach where PowerEdge R920 provides huge host processing capabilities and Dell Compellent Flash storage while offering core Fluid Architecture features brings in Flash performance at the price of HDD. Thus eliminates the hurdle of cost and capacity for flash adoption in enterprise storage. Dell OLAP solution discussed here is economic, using which customers can built effective OLAP systems to deliver higher throughputs for BI applications to gain upper hand over competitors. Key Takeaways PowerEdge R920 server embedded with enormous resources, is optimal choice for OLAP server The Compellent Flash optimized array delivers up to 2 times the MBPS compared to the HDD configuration that is similar in cost. Query Response Time delivered by the Compellent Flash optimized array is 50% less compared to the HDD configuration that is similar in cost.
