3 Managing enuresis What is enuresis? It is another word for bedwetting. How common is it? l At the age of 5 years, 1 in 7 children wet the bed. l At the age of 10 years, 1 in 14 children wet the bed, l At the age of 15 years, only 1 in 100 children wet the bed. So it is very common in young school children, and gets much less common as they get older. Almost all children will become dry. Bedwetting is twice as common in boys as girls. What causes bedwetting? We are not sure how children become dry. They develop dryness at different ages. Delay in becoming dry often runs in families. Three quarters of school children who wet the bed, have one or both parents who wet the bed longer than usual. Boys and first born children are more likely to wet the bed than girls or later children. Rarely bed wetting may be due to a problem with the kidneys or bladder. This is unlikely if the child is dry day by day, and passes a normal stream or urine. It is unlikely if the child has at least some dry nights. Bedwetting is not due to deep sleep, dreaming, naughtiness, laziness, lack of intelligence, or a small bladder. Nervous and emotional problems are most often the result of bed wetting rather than the cause of it. Toilet training at too young an age, or too much pressure may contribute to bedwetting. Stresses such as family problems, or hospital admissions may contribute to persistent bedwetting, as may the arrival of a new baby. 3

4 Managing enuresis How to help children who wet the bed Different approaches and remedies can be tried. Some of them help one child but not another. Often different methods have to be tried to find the one that is suitable for your child, and the least trouble in your home. Under the age of 7 years, bedwetting may be a nuisance, but it is not a disorder, the child should just be encouraged. The family s approach is important. It helps to be encouraging and patient. unishment & rewards unishment does not help a child to become dry. Rewards can help. Clinic staff can advise you on this. Lifting and awakening Lifting the child may help to reduce the washing load, but will not help the child to become dry. Unless the child is wide-awake when lifted, they are still wetting in their sleep and are not learning control. Calendars, diaries and stars Calendars, diaries and stars can be useful forms of encouragement for a child, they are also a helpful record for parents to see if things are improving or not. Your child can take part in filling in the calendar, diary or star chart. Your Health Visitor or School Nurse can offer advice on how to chart your child s progress. Drinks Children should always be allowed to drink if they are thirsty. Drinks such as tea, coffee and cola drinks are best avoided in the evenings, as they may make the child more likely to wet the bed. 4

5 Managing enuresis Alarms Enuresis alarms help over half the children who wet the bed, but the child must be old enough not to be frightened by the noise, and be able to co-operate. This is usually around the age of 7 years. School nurses and G s can offer advice on enuresis alarms. They can also be purchased privately from major chemists, from ERIC (see the end of this booklet for information) and from advertisements in newspapers and magazines. In older children a body worn mini alarm may be used. Medication Medication can sometimes be helpful, but it is not appropriate for all children and does not cure bedwetting. Clinic staff can advise you on this. Beds rotect the mattress with a really good plastic strong cover. Cheap ones tear easily, and do not stand the nightly wetting. Strong ones can be obtained at major chemists and other shops dealing with children s needs. Things that do not help to improve the bedwetting Try not to do the following: l Becoming over anxious or cross with the child l Giving lavish rewards for dry nights l Referring to the child as the bedwetter l Comparing the child with other children who are dry at night 5
