WXA 500 LiveCD Requirements The SonicWALL WXA 500 LiveCD requires: A SonicWALL E-class NSA, NSA, or TZ security appliance running SonicOS or higher firmware. An unused interface on the SonicWALL NSA/TZ series appliance configured with a LAN Static IP address and a DHCP lease scope. Please refer to the SonicWALL WXA Quick Start Guide for more information. A PC with a Pentium 4 processor or higher with: CD/DVD ROM bay Minimum of 2GB RAM Minimum of 80 GB hard disk Monitor and Keyboard

WXA 5000 Virtual Appliance Requirements The SonicWALL WXA 5000 Virtual Appliance requires: A SonicWALL E-class NSA, NSA, or TZ security appliance running SonicOS or higher firmware. An unused interface on the SonicWALL NSA or TZ security appliance. A server running VMware ESX or ESXi versions 4.x. 2 virtual CPUs 80 GB hard disk 4GB RAM A layer 2 network between the ESX Server and the SonicWALL NSA/TZ. Note: This is required for communication between SonicWALL WXA 5000 on your ESX Server and SonicWALL appliance. Enhancements in WXA This section describes the enhancements in the WXA release. Increased WXA 500 Hardware Support The Kernel and operating system have been updated. As part of this update, hardware support for the SonicWALL WXA 500 is increased, Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) is now supported, compatibility with Network Interface Controllers (NIC) is increased, and several other drivers are incorporated or updated. TCP Acceleration Graphs The TCP Acceleration > Statistics Breakdown page now has the option to graph TCP Acceleration by port, IP address and data reduction. 2

WFS Basic Setup The WAN Acceleration > Basic Setup tab gives the user the option to choose between Basic (default) and Advanced configuration modes. The Basic configuration mode is a simplified and user friendly way to have the WXA series appliance join the domain, add servers to the configuration, and create the necessary records on the domain. The Advanced configuration mode offers the same configuration procedures used in the WXA 1.0.x firmware, allowing a more detailed configuration if needed. If the WXA series appliance is not joined to the domain, a Join Domain button displays: After joining the domain, the Add Server and Add Domain Records buttons display: 3

WFS Progress Tool for Joining the Domain When joining a domain the WFS Acceleration > Domain Details page now displays a Joining the Domain panel, detailing the progress of each step in the domain joining procedure. This panel can be used as a diagnostic tool to show where problems might be when joining a domain. WFS Test Configuration The Domain Details > Test Configuration page incorporates an in depth display of what nodes on the network are not currently configured properly. A green circle indicates the node is configured correctly. A red circle indicates the node is not configured correctly. 4

WFS NTLM Support WFS Acceleration now supports NT LAN Manager (NTLM). The PC does not need to join an AD Domain in order to access the WXA appliance for WFS Acceleration. The WXA appliance, which is a member of the domain, proxies the authentication of the user. WFS Auto-Tuning In the WXA 1.0.x firmware, WFS Acceleration needed to be configured for the network characteristics, such as latency & bandwidth. This is no longer necessary in the majority of cases for the WXA firmware. WXA 500 LiveCD Factory Reset The WXA 500 LiveCD now supports the option to perform a Factory Reset. 5

Browser Support The WXA series appliance can only be monitored and configured using the management interface on the SonicWALL NSA or TZ security appliance running SonicOS or higher firmware. SonicOS with Visualization uses advanced browser technologies such as HTML5, which are supported in most recent browsers. SonicWALL recommends using the latest Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Safari browsers for administration of SonicOS. This release supports the following Web browsers: Chrome 11.0 and higher (recommended browser for dashboard real-time graphics display) Firefox 4.0 and higher Internet Explorer 8.0 and higher (do not use compatibility mode) Safari 5.0 and higher Mobile device browsers are not recommended for SonicWALL appliance system administration. Deployment Considerations Consider the following when setting up the WXA series appliance within your network: The WXA release is not compatible with any WXA 1.0.x release. Upgrading from WXA 1.0.x to firmware requires re-joining the domain and clearing the browser cache. WXA only supports Kerberos and NT LAN Manager (NTLM) for Windows File Sharing Acceleration. WXA only supports Microsoft Windows based file servers. This includes all supported versions of Microsoft Windows (2003 and 2008) and excludes Network Attached Storage appliances from third party vendors. Dynamic routing is not supported for TCP Acceleration Distributed File System (DFS) referrals are not allowed. Network Address Translation (NAT) is not supported for TCP acceleration. Use WXA Subnets for WFS deployments with Tunnel Interfaces (Route Based VPN). Domain Auto-join is not supported on the WXA 500 Live CD and WXA 5000 Virtual Appliance. Running the WXA 500 LiveCD inside a virtualization host (like ESXi, Xen or VirtualBox) is not supported. 6

Known Issues This section contains a list of the known issues in the SonicWALL WXA release. Symptom Condition / Workaround Issue Downgrading firmware versions on the WXA 5000 Virtual Appliance is unsuccessful and an error message is displayed after clicking the Reboot button. Occurs when running a WXA 5000 Virtual Appliance and the firmware is downgraded from WXA to Upgrading from WXA to is successful with no error messages If the WXA hostname is changed, the WFS server cannot register in the Domain Name System (DNS). Shares with more than 76 characters are not displayed correctly in the list of Available Shares. Upgrading to WXA firmware requires the user to re-join the domain. The WXA 1.0.x management interface still displays after upgrading to the WXA release. Occurs when changing the WXA appliance hostname, and then joining WFS to the domain. Workaround: Manually delete the reverse DNS records and the old machine account, and then rejoin the domain. Occurs when creating a share with a name that exceeds 76 characters in length. All the WXA appliances have a share name limitation of 76 characters. Occurs when upgrading WXA firmware from 1.0.x to in the System > Firmware tab. Occurs when upgrading firmware from WXA 1.0.x to WXA Exit the management interface, then log back in without clearing the browser cache. The WXA 1.0.x management interface might still be displayed. Workaround: Clear the browser cache after the WXA appliance reboots Resolved Issues The following issues were resolved in the WXA release: Symptom Condition / Workaround Issue The WXA appliance cannot join the domain or add domain records with Japanese characters in the Administrator s credentials. Occurs when joining the domain or adding domain records using Administrator s credentials that contain Japanese characters A server name containing Japanese characters does not list available shares. Shares are visible on the WFS Acceleration > Shares page, but they cannot be selected. Occurs when navigating to the WFS Acceleration > Shares page, then viewing the list of available shares on a server with Japanese characters in its name. Occurs when adding a new server with a Japanese server name, clicking the Shares dropdown list for that server, then selecting a share. This also occurs if shares are added manually

Symptom Condition / Workaround Issue The configuration of TCP Acceleration Service Object is lost and set back to the default HTTP settings after a WXA appliance reboot. Occurs when navigating to the TCP Acceleration > Configuration tab and configuring TCP Acceleration to accelerate all FTP traffic. Reboot the WXA appliance and see that the TCP Acceleration configuration is set back to the default HTTP settings. Resolution: Run SonicOS or higher firmware on the NSA/TZ security appliance Some of the actions performed in the WAN Acceleration Management Interface are not logged in the Syslog Messages. Some of the DHCP events are not recorded in the WAN Acceleration > Log page. Data transfer speeds are slower due to readahead cache size. Only the first domain controller (DC) received in a DNS response is shown as discovered, even though that DC may not be the closest one. Occurs when using action items in the WAN Acceleration Management Interface, then checking the Log page to see if the actions are recorded. Occurs when performing configuration procedures related to DHCP, then checking the Log page for DHCP events. The DHCP logging is increased, causing more DHCP events to be recorded. Occurs when transferring data between WXA appliances with a read-ahead cache size of 4K. The read-ahead cache size is increased to 60K, maintaining an adequate data transfer speed. Occurs when joining a domain with multiple DCs. Active Directory Sites and Services is either not configured or configured incorrectly The following issues were resolved in the WXA release: Symptom Condition / Workaround Issue The following error message is displayed: Multiple Active Network devices detected. Occurs when installing the WXA 500 Live CD on a standalone PC or server. The installation stops and displays the error message Multiple Active Network devices detected, even with a single active network link or a single onboard network card A progress notification is not displayed during a secure factory reset. The following messages are displayed during a secure factory reset: You are about to perform a factory reset on the appliance.. and Factory Reset successful, the appliance will now be rebooted. Occurs when performing a secure factory reset and viewing the management interface. A progress notification should be displayed to let the user know that the reset is working. Occurs when performing a secure factory reset and rebooting the appliance. Reword the message You are about to perform a factory reset on the appliance.. to inform the customer this process will take 10 minutes. Remove the message Factory Reset successful, the appliance will now be rebooted

Symptom Condition / Workaround Issue Non-disk shares ending with IPC$ are displayed in the list of Available Shares. Occurs when navigating to the WFS Acceleration > Tools tab and requesting a list of Available Shares. Disk shares ending with $ are allowed to be displayed in the Available Shares list, but nondisk shares ending with IPC$ should not be displayed Trailing spaces, plus signs (+), and long share names are not displayed in the list of Available Shares. Windows file sharing for servers with Japanese or Unicode characters do not display the shares in the profile. Occurs when navigating to the WFS Acceleration > Shares or Tools tab and viewing a list of the available shares. Occurs when navigating to the WFS Acceleration > Shares page and saving a share from a server with Japanese or Unicode characters. View the profile and see that the share did not save

Upgrading WXA Image Procedures All the firmware image upgrading procedures for the SonicWALL WXA series appliance are performed through the SonicWALL NSA/TZ series appliance s user interface. Both appliances must have compatible firmware versions. Upgrading both appliances to the latest firmware versions should complete this task. Upgrading your appliance from WXA 1.0.x to firmware requires you to re-join the domain. This section contains the following firmware image upgrading procedures for the SonicWALL WXA series appliance: Obtaining the Latest SonicWALL WXA Series Appliance Firmware Image...10 Upgrading the SonicWALL WXA Series Appliance Firmware...10 Obtaining the Latest SonicWALL WXA Series Appliance Firmware Image To obtain the latest firmware image on your SonicWALL WXA series appliance, do the following: 1.
