3 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Diesel Applied Technology program offers two certificates: Diesel Engine Specialist and Diesel System Specialist. In addition, it also offers an Associate Degree in Applied Science (Diesel Applied Technology). The two Diesel Certificates are made up of 15 classes plus: COMG 1391 Special Topics/Communications, General TECM 1301 Industrial Mathematics. These certificates also offer POFI 1301 Computer Applications AUMT 1445 Automotive Climate Control Systems And/or WLDG 1340 AWS Level 1 Certification Review The Associate in Diesel Applied Technology consists of all the classes listed above plus five general academic classes: ENGL 1301 Composition 1 Mission Statement Math or Natural science Elective Humanities/Visual or Performing Arts Elective Speech Elective Social/Behavioral Science Elective. Diesel Applied Technology Program Mission/Purpose: To provide students in our community with the knowledge and training necessary so that they can be prepared for entry level positions into the field of Diesel technology, and to help seasoned technicians increase their familiarity with new technology available throughout the industry. Program Achievements Since the last program review five years ago, the Diesel Applied Technology program has achieved all its stated program objectives that were listed in the program review. These include the following: Expand the number of advisory committee members and the frequency and depth of meetings Program modernization including the acquisition of new equipment and training aids Upgrade the computers and software used in the Diesel labs Obtain a two-ton overhead crane for the small Diesel lab Develop community outreach through career fairs and student advising -2-
4 Program Goals and Action Plans The current Diesel Applied Technology program has a number of program-related goals and action plans that are expected to be implemented over the next 5 years. These include: Program goals Acquire two-to-three new diesel powered trucks and add them to the program. The current vehicles that are in the Diesel program are 10-to-15-years old and represent outdated technology. Obtain a large shipping container, which will be used for equipment storage and allow the small diesel shop to be expanded, so dual-credit students can store their tool boxes. Obtain an alignment rack for the Diesel program, which will allow students to train on alignment equipment that is rated for class 7 and 8 trucks. Obtain a small, turn-key engine with EGR and exhaust after-treatment for the small diesel shop, so students can be introduced to emissions related equipment in the basic Diesel classes. Obtain two-to-three natural gas powered engines and explore the feasibility of converting the shop to natural gas. Natural gas represents the latest technology that is currently being fielded throughout the industry. Action Plans Update the SLOs for the Diesel program both for the Dual-Credit students and to reflect the new technology that is available through equipment acquisitions. Create and implement a new curriculum program for the Dual-Credit students that are coming from Harold T. Branch, a Corpus Christi Independent School District (CCISD) Dual-Credit high school. Make changes to curriculum so that total program credit hours conform to the new 60-hour rule currently being implemented throughout the college. Student Learning Outcomes (This represents student assessment during the academic year, Fall, Spring, and Summer. Class is generally limited to a maximum of 15, but this number can be exceeded to a maximum of 18.) SLO 1: Valve Grind: 85% of students (26/30) completed the checklist with an accuracy of 100%. SLO 2: Set Valve Lash: 100% (30/30) of students were able to perform a valve lash adjustment with an accuracy of 100%. -3-
5 SLO 3: Micrometer adjustment: 90% (27/30) of students were able to measure a crankshaft journal with an accuracy of 90%. SLO 4: Electrical Measurement: 90% (27/30) of students were able to score 90% or higher while performing a voltage drop measurement on a vehicles starting system with 100% accuracy. SLO 5: Diagnostic Scan Tool: 100% (30/30) of students were able to score 90% or higher on a diagnostic scan tool exam while checking for engine codes. General Education Competencies Diesel students must be able demonstrate competency of several General Education skills. They must be able to read and understand repair manuals, service procedures, and technical data from both scan tools and web sources. Student success is directly tied to their ability to demonstrate critical thinking skills, evaluating critical pieces of information while performing diagnoses and repairing diesel equipment. In addition, the Diesel Applied Technology program reinforces General Education skills by requiring students to successfully complete a basic English class (COMG 1391: Special Topics/Communications, General) and Math (TECM 1301: Industrial Mathematics) courses. Assessment of Program Outcomes and Objectives The Diesel program curriculum has provided students with knowledge, training, and new equipment in order to satisfy its mission. According to the most recent data available, of the (28) surveys returned (83.9%) of students rated the quality of instruction as good or excellent. In addition of the 82 students graduated from the Diesel Applied Technology Program between and had a 90.2% job placement rate within the industry, based on the Texas Higher education boards (ASALFS) survey program. Instructional related activities The Diesel Applied program s instructional methods include, but are not limited to, the following: Lecture PowerPoint presentations Film Multimedia Classroom exercises Computer-based exercises Practical hands-on exercises Lab exercises documented by validation and tests Live work performed in the lab -4-
6 Curriculum Integration and Mobility The curriculum for the Diesel program conforms to the organization layout dictated by Workforce Education Course Manual (WECM). This allows students to earn credits and, if necessary, transfer those credits to other institutions. The Diesel certificate program has curriculum integration with two other programs located on campus: Automotive Technology (AUMT 1445) Automotive Climate Control Systems Welding Technology (WLDG 1340) AWS Level 1 Certification Students planning on obtaining an Associate Degree in Diesel Applied Technology are required to complete 56 semester hours and 15 hours of general education courses. The general education courses include: ENGL 1301: Composition I Math or Natural Science elective Humanities /Visual or performing arts elective Speech elective Social/Behavioral Science elective Student Educational Intent Students enrolling in the Diesel Applied Technology program and declared diesel as their major (51 as of 2013) enrolled for a variety of reasons, some of these include: Gain skills necessary to enter a new occupation 78.6% Gain skills to remain current or advance 14.3% Satisfy a personnel interest 3.6% Explore a career direction 3.6% In addition, when students were asked if they planned to graduate from Del Mar College, 50% said they would seek one or more certificates; and 50% said they would obtain an Associate Degree in Diesel Applied Technology. Effective Personnel Utilization The Diesel Applied Program has two full-time faculty members. Both instructors are ASE Master Heavy Truck certified and possess a number of other ASE certifications. The Diesel program offers 15 Diesel related courses taught by both instructors throughout the year. The average class size is 13.4 students per instructor with the classes being taught twice annually. Both instructors annually attend training at several major diesel engine schools. In addition, both instructors are also on a number of institutional related committees: -5-
7 Pete Carpentier: Library Committee Kelvin Jones: Library Committee Safety Committee Curriculum Committee Cost Effectiveness The Diesel program has experienced growth in both the number of students registering for the program and the number of contact hours averaged over the last five years. The student-instructor ratio increased to 13.4 to 1, which is 11.8% higher than the Division of Business, Professional, and Technology Education. In addition, the number of contact hours over the last five years averaged 30,179, which is 19.2% higher than the average for Business and Technology Programs. Strategic Advantage The Diesel Applied Technology program maintains a strategic advantage in the Corpus Christi area by providing its students with highly educated instructors and variety of modern equipment. The Diesel program is strategically located in South Texas, which allows it to provide students in the area an affordable quality education. In addition, the program has a strong advisory committee, a versatile curriculum, and more than 50 years of experience between both Diesel instructors. All of these things help to keep the Diesel Applied Technology program technologically dominate and attractive to students in the area. -6-
8 1. Assessment Process for Achieving Program Student Learning Outcomes and General Education Competencies A. Student Learning Outcomes (The following represents assessment during academic year (summer, fall, spring). Class size is limited to 15 students but may be increased to 19 in some circumstances.) SLO 1: Valve Grind: Students must be able to grind a valve and a seat on a diesel engine cylinder head based upon established industry standards. While performing this task they will use critical thinking skills to evaluate components of information. Target: 80% of students will be able to grind both a valve and a seat on a cylinder head with an accuracy of 100%. Findings: 85% of students (26/30) were able to grind both a valve and a seat on a cylinder head with an accuracy of 100% based on industry standards. SLO 2: Set Valve Lash: Students must be able to set the valve lash on various diesel engines using a shop manual with the latest industry standards. While performing this task they will utilize critical thinking skills to judge the relevance of different components of information. Target: 75% of students will be able to perform a valve lash adjustment on a variety of diesel engines with an accuracy of 100%. Findings: 100% of students (30/30) were able to perform a valve lash adjustment on a variety of diesel engines with an accuracy of 100%. SLO 3: Micrometer Measurement: Students must be able to measure a crankshaft journal using an online repair manual. They will use critical thinking skills while performing this task. Target: 90% of students will be able to measure a crankshaft journal with an accuracy of 100%. 9 SLO 4: Electrical Measurement: Students must be able to measure voltage drop on a vehicles starting system. This will be assessed with both a written test and hands-on test that is based on industry standards. SLO 5: Diagnostic Scan Tool: Students must be able to use a scan tool to check a vehicle for engine codes. This task will be assessed with both a written test and a hands-on shop test that is based on industry standards. While performing this test students will evaluate critical components of information. Target: 80% of students will be able to use a scan tool to check for vehicle engine codes with an accuracy of 100%. Findings: 100% of students (30/30) were able to score 90% or higher on the diagnostic scan tool exam while checking for vehicle engine codes. -8-
10 2. Assessment of Program Outcomes/Objectives The Diesel program curriculum has provided students with knowledge, training, and new equipment in order to satisfy its mission. According to the most recent data (fall 2013), a total of 64 surveys were distributed and 28 (43.8%) were returned and analyzed. Twenty-five of 28 (89.3%) students surveyed rated the quality of instruction as good or excellent. Twenty-two of 28 (78.6%) students surveyed stated that the reason they enrolled was to gain the skills needed for a new occupation. The Del Mar College Diesel Technology program produced 82 graduates between and , with a threeyear placement rate of 73 of 82 (90.2%). According to the graduation survey conducted by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board s (ASALFS) program, 71 of 82 (87.5%) students for the year were employed in the diesel industry within one year of graduation. In order to improve the program s educational experience for students, the Diesel program has worked closely with its advisory committee members on updating the curriculum and acquiring new engines and trainers for the program. In addition, the program has upgraded its facilities, purchasing a new two-ton overhead crane for the small diesel shop and updating the electrical test equipment for the basic electrical class and new computer equipment for the diesel lab. In addition to these changes, the Diesel program has begun to do outreach to dual-credit students through Harold T. Branch, a Dual Credit institution with the Corpus Christi Independent School District (CCISD). This is projected to significantly increase enrollment beginning in fall of The current program outcomes and objectives are fine and do not require attention at this time. Students continue to meet the targets set for each SLO. The SLO s themselves will have to be changed beginning in fall 2014, because of the expected influx of new students from Harold T. Branch and in order to keep up with changes that are occurring within the diesel industry. -9-
11 3. Instructional Related Activities The instructional methods used in the Diesel program include both classroom exercises and shop projects. The classroom teaching methods include lecture, film, multimedia, PowerPoint presentations, and computer-based exercises. These exercises are documented by validation tests and reinforced by practical hands-on application in the Diesel Lab. In the Diesel Lab, students receive supervised assignments where they apply practical knowledge gained in the classroom. These assignments take the form of live work where the students also take part in learning exercises using a variety of training simulators. In addition, the students also perform live work on vehicles and equipment brought in by customers, as well as equipment owned by the college. Both of these methods help demonstrate competency and reinforce practical hands-on skills. The students also take part in a number of instructor led activities which helps reinforce and master practical knowledge gained in the classroom. -10-
12 4. Curriculum Integration and Mobility The Diesel Applied Technology program shares two common core courses with the Automotive Program. The one course is AUMT 1445: Automotive Climate Control Systems. In addition, the Diesel program shares one common core course with the Welding program WLDG 1340: AWS Level 1 Certification Review. The basic courses taught in the Diesel program include: DEMR 1301: Shop Safety HEMR 1304: Natural Gas Compression DEMR 1229: Preventative Maintenance DEMR 1406: Diesel 1 DEMR 1449: Diesel 2 DEMR 2334: Advance Tune Up DEMR 2432: Electronic Controls DEMR 1416: Basic Hydraulics DEMR 1405: Basic Electrical DEMR 1327: Tractor Trailer Service and Repair DEMR 1313: Fuel Systems DEMR 1230: Steering and Suspension DEMR 1421: Power Trains 1 DEMR 1317: Basic Brakes. HEMR 1401: Tracks and Undercarriages Students planning to obtain an Associate Degree in Diesel Applied Technology are required to complete 56 semester hours of Diesel curriculum and an additional 15 hours of general education courses, which include ENGL 1301: Composition I, a Math or Natural Science Elective, a Humanities/Visual or Performing Arts Elective, a Speech Elective, and a Social/Behavioral Science Elective. Students planning to obtain the two certificates needed for the Diesel Applied Technology program (Diesel Engine Specialist and Diesel System Specialist) are required to take 30 hours of Diesel curriculum and an additional 12 hours, which include POFI 1301: Computer Applications I, SPCR 1301: Special Topics in Communications, General, TECM 1301: Industrial Mathematics, and WLDG 1340: AWS Level I Certificate Review. Advisors encourage students to obtain both certificates to ensure that they become a better skilled Diesel technician. POFI 1301, SPCR 1301, and TECM 1301 are required in all certificate programs. WLDG 1340 is required in Automotive and Auto Body. -11-

Student Educational Intent The Diesel Applied Technology program had a total of 51 students declaring Diesel Applied Technology as their major course of study by the fall of This represents an increase of 10.8% (46 in 2008 vs 51 in 2013) in the number of diesel majors in the last five years and compares favorably with the collegewide average of -9.2% (11,310 in 2008 vs 10,502 in 2013). Students who responded to a 2013 (I.D.E.A) survey stated that their most important reason for attending Del Mar College was as follows: I. Gain skills necessary to enter a new occupation (22 of 28) 78.6% II. Gain skills necessary to remain current or advance (4 of 28)14.3% III. Satisfy a personnel interest (1 of 28) 3.6% IV. Explore a career direction (1 of 28) 3.6% When asked to identify their long term educational goals in the same survey, students responded as follows: I. Earn a certificate (5 of 28) 17.9% II. Earn a two-year degree (14 of 28) 50.0% III. Earn a four-year degree (5 of 28) 17.9% IV. Graduate studies (4 of 28) 14.3% When asked to identify if they planned to graduate from Del Mar College, students responded as follows: I. Yes with a certificate (13 of 26) 50.0% II. Yes with an Associate degree (13 of 26) 50.0% When asked whether they planned to transfer to another college or University, students responded as follows: I. Yes (4 of 28) 14.3% II. No (24 of 28) 85.7% The student surveys indicate that students (1) are satisfied with the Diesel Technology program and (2) are intent on using their enrollment to gain employment in the workforce. In addition, students also expressed their intent to use the certificates and credits gained at Del Mar College as a means to further their careers. -12-
14 6. Effective Personnel Utilization The Diesel program has two full-time faculty members. In Fall 2013 the two full-time faculty members taught 6 classes between them. The average teaching load consists of 24 hours a week per instructor. The teaching load translates to teaching 3 classes in the Fall, 3 in the Spring, and 3 in the Summer. The average class size is 13.4 students. The classes in the Diesel program are taught at least twice annually. The academic classes that are required for completion of the Diesel program are taught at least three times an academic year. In addition to teaching classes, each full-time faculty member is charged with advising majors, as well as a large number of new students. Faculty members must also participate in college-wide committees, attend career days, recruit students, conduct employment-related activities, and assist with campuswide tours. Students evaluate faculty yearly; and faculty must complete a yearly self-evaluation, which is reviewed with the Department Chair and Dean of Business, Professional and Technology Education. Both instructors have attended several CARQUEST workshops on campus, have done on-line training put on by major Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) providers, and have and will continue to attend the Vo-Tech training workshop sponsored by Cummins Southern Plains, Inc. One instructor attends at least three major diesel engine factory training schools per year. These workshops assist the instructors in providing the latest training technology to the Diesel student. Since factory training is needed, both instructors are encouraged to attend at least two workshops per year. The instructors have also attended several training workshops through the Learning Resource Center at the libraries from both East and West campuses. Both instructors are Master ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) in Medium/Heavy Truck Technicians. Each is also ASE certified in Light-Duty diesel engines. One instructor is ASE certified in Transit Bus diesel engines and also in Preventive Maintenance. The other instructor is also ASE certified in Heavy Truck Equipment and Electrical and Hydraulics. Cost Effectiveness Student to Faculty Ratio Date (FTE) The Diesel Applied Technology program student-to-instructor ratio was 3.4 to 1, which is 11.8% higher than the ratio for the Division of Business, Professional, and Technology Education. The contact hours generated per FTE teaching staff in the fall 2013 was 5,348, 20.9% higher than the contact hours college wide, 34.6% higher than the average for the Division of Business, Professional, and Technology Education, and 19.2% higher than the average for the Business and Technology programs. Declared Majors Of the 51 students enrolled in fall 2013 in the Diesel program, the unduplicated head count of 34 students (85.3%) were Diesel Applied Technology declared majors. The number of diesel applied technology majors has an average of 40 per fall semester over the past 5 years. Contact Hours The five-year contact hour average was 30,179, with generating the highest (35,136) and the lowest (24,512). Enrollment Figures Annual enrollment has averaged 253 students in the past 5 years which covers academic years 2008 to The highest enrollment was 298 in and the lowest was 203 in Degree and Certificate Complete Totals According to recent data, the program produced 11 AAS graduates from 2008 to 2013 and 81 certificates were awarded to Diesel Applied Technology majors. Placement Success Rate The Diesel Applied Technology program produced 82 graduates between, with a three-year average successful placement rate of 90.2% (74 of 82). The placement rate exceeds the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board standard of 15 graduates in a three-year period with at least 85% placement. The follow-up data generated through the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board s Automated Student and Adult Learner Follow-up System (ASALFS) indicates 87.5% of the graduates were employed and/or attending school within one year after graduation, compared to the college-wide average of 78.1%. -15-

Strategic Advantage The Diesel Applied Technology program maintains a strategic advantage in the Corpus Christi area by providing its students with top-notch instructors as well as state-of-the-art facilities. Even though the Del Mar College Diesel program does compete with one other Diesel certificate program in the area, Del Mar College maintains its dominance due to its versatile curriculum, offering two certificate programs and one Associate degree. In particular, it is the two-year Associate in Applied Science Degree (Diesel Applied Technology) that provides our students an increased value in training and experience: two strong traits our local businesses and industries have come to recognize from the students of the Del Mar College Diesel Applied Technology program. The Del Mar College Diesel program instructors, Pete Carpentier and Kelvin Jones, provide over a half a century of knowledge and experience to their program. Their constant certification renewals allow them to witness the latest technology and training, which in turn allows them to deliver the latest instructional content to the students. Alongside the Del Mar Diesel program instructors, the administration and staff does a fantastic job of searching for funds to compliment the Diesel program with the latest tools and technology. It is this dedication from the instructors and staff that keeps programs such as Diesel Applied Technology dominant and attractive to students in the area. -16-
