Today s (Not So) Hidden Agenda: Loss Prevention Everyone is a Risk Manager... including you! Yes, take those risks BUT BE SMART ABOUT THEM!
Some examples: Loss Prevention Activities University property or assets usage Valid drivers license and insurance Require event waivers
How Are Employees Covered? Employees are covered by University insurance while acting within the course and scope of their employment.
How We Pay for Insurance The University is self-insured. Self-Insurance really means no insurance! Excess insurance covers catastrophic losses.
UNIVERSITY INSURANCE PROGRAMS
General Liability Provides protection for damage, loss, and injury to third parties
General Liability Third Party Losses Diseased/Fallen Trees
General Liability - Third Party Injury Claims
Property Program Property and buildings are covered for damage from perils such as fire, explosion, water damage Evaluate your department s occupied space and equipment for potential property perils and Take steps to reduce all risks.
Property Program Deductibles The amount your department budget pays before insurance kicks in depends upon the cause Investigation by Sedgwick to determine cause
Property Program Property and Equipment Damage
Reporting Stolen, Lost, or Damaged Property For theft, call Campus Police and complete a report. For fires, call 911 and Campus Fire Marshal (EH&S). Always call the toll free claims reporting number
When you bring personal property from home, if there is damage or loss, does the University pay for your items?
How are you insured when driving on the job? THE ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION DEPENDS ON TWO FACTORS: 1. Who owns the vehicle (University, Rental Car Agency, Individual) 2. What gets damaged (Person or Property)
UC Automobile Program Covers all University-owned vehicles The program covers: Damage to University vehicle Damage to other party s vehicle(s) Injuries to other parties Private or improper use of the vehicle invalidates the coverage!
Automobile Program Deductible The deductible for damage to the UC vehicle is $500 per occurrence. The driver s department pays the deductible
Automobile Program Restrictions Valid driver license for the type of vehicle used Use approved by appropriate campus official Tickets are the DRIVER S responsibility Authorized drivers: employees and formal volunteers Used for University business only
Damage Caused to UC Vehicles
What to do in case of an accident Remain calm. Aid the injured. Call 911 Get all contact and insurance information of all involved parties Get witness names and addresses Take pictures Complete the Vehicle Accident Report** Call to report the accident **if driving a University-owned vehicle
What NOT to do in case of an accident Do not discuss the accident with anyone other than police or a university representative Do not accept or deny fault Do not offer to pay for damages
Driving A Rental Vehicle on UC Business Companies which include insurance for UC drivers: Hertz ode=1&id=246 Enterprise/National ode=1&id=247
Renting from Agencies Without UC Agreements NO INSURANCE provided by UC Employee has personal Liability Employee s insurance is primary
Driving Your Own Car on University Business Your auto insurance policy provides the coverage If your vehicle is damaged your department may pay the first $500. If someone else s vehicle or property is damaged Your auto insurance policy If someone else is injured Your auto insurance policy If you are injured Workers Compensation
