1 Swimming - An Essential Part of the Western Australian Way of Life. Western Australian Swimming Association Inc. 1

2 Swimming Western Australia (SWA) is pleased to present the SWA Performance Pathway Programme Selection Criteria. The SWA Performance Pathway Programme underpins Swimming Australia (SAL) and the WA Institute of Sport (WAIS) to provide an integrated pathway for athlete and coach development for prolonged success within the State. A review of the Performance Pathway Programme has been undertaken by SWA, with the assistance of SWA Coaching Director, Leigh Nugent, in order to align with national standards and benchmarks. For the last 2 years, SWA has been capturing up to 300 swimmers in the Pathway and as a result, SWA has been unable to provide adequate pathway activities within the budget framework. With the alignment, SWA will be able to more effectively target funds towards athletes and coaches to pursue their development in a professional manner while providing activities that are relevant and valuable to all involved. The programme has been developed to capture athletes who are tracking along the Performance Pathway to enable SWA to deliver the appropriate developmental and educational opportunities. ATHLETE SELECTION CRITERIA Eligibility for the Performance Pathway Programme Athletes must be an Australian Citizen at the date of selection. Athletes, who are residents in Australia at the time of selection and are in the process of becoming an Australian Citizen, may be considered for selection at SWA s absolute discretion (documentation required) Athletes must be a registered member of a Swimming WA affiliated Club and reside in WA at the time of acceptance into the squad, and for the duration of their involvement in the squad. Regional athletes are subject to the same selection criteria and will also be eligible to qualify for the Country Squad, based on performances at the 2016 Country Championships. Athletes must meet all requirements in the selection criteria as ratified by SWA Management. Athletes accept their position in the Programme by agreeing and adhering to the Terms and Conditions outlined in the Athlete Agreement and Code of Behaviour (available on request). The number of athletes in each squad will be at SWA s absolute discretion. 2

3 Should they make the State Team Short Course criteria, athletes must make themselves available for selection in the 2016 WA State Team. Where an athlete meets the selection criteria for more than one (1) Squad, SWA Management, in conjunction with the SWA Coaching Director and the swimmer s home coach, will determine the most suitable squad for the swimmer. Athletes transferring from interstate to WA may be considered as an addition to a squad by SWA Management. Athletes may be considered once registered with a SWA affiliated Club and reside in WA for minimum of ninety (90) days. WAIS Scholarship holders are ineligible for selection. SWA reserves the right, at its absolute discretion, to alter the criteria and to consider the addition of athletes under special circumstances. COACH SELECTION CRITERIA Eligibility for the Performance Pathway Programme Coaches must: Be the primary coach of an athlete selected in the Performance Pathway Programme for at least three (3) months prior to their selection. Endeavor to participate in Performance squad activities. Be a SWA Coach Member. Hold a valid Working with Children Check. Be a current ASCTA Accredited Coach and ASCTA Member. SQUAD ACTIVITIES Upon selection into the SWA Performance Pathway Programme, swimmers will be invited to attend various camps, workshops and clinics. An athlete s age, performance, gender, experience, and access to sports performance education will determine which sessions individual athletes will be invited to attend. Squad activities will be determined on an individual basis by SWA Management in consultation with the SWA Coaching Director and the swimmer s home coach. The information will be communicated to swimmers upon invitation into the Squad as required. The SWA Performance Pathway squads are determined 3 through qualification times based on National performance standards for 13 years to Open and State standards for years. The athletes performances qualify them for a particular squad listed below. Such classification provides recognition of an athlete s performance relative to their age. SWA performance pathway squad activities such as training camps and educational programmes will be designed to align with the athlete s age, stage of development and training capabilities. For example a 13 year old female, who has qualified in the Gold Squad, may benefit most from being in the training camp (3 days) with other swimmers of a similar age and training standard rather than with Gold Squad year old swimmers who are training at a higher level. Selection and notification of athletes into the SWA Performance Pathway Programme will take place after 2016 Australian Open Long Course Championships. SWA is planning squad activities throughout during the following times; 28th -29th May 2016 January School Holidays 2017 (2-5 days depending on squad) Additional 1 day clinics, to be determined Squad activities will range from live-in training camps, to one day clinics focused on skill acquisition and educational forums all to assist the athlete to increase their ability and performance in and out of the water. SWA will also select athletes to take part in the WAIS Developing Champions Programme. Coaches with athletes in the programme will also be provided a number of developmental and educational opportunities throughout the year. STATE TEAM (13 YEARS OLD TO 17 YEARS OLD) The Australian State Teams Age Short Course Championships is the pinnacle age group event in the Short Course calendar in Australia. The Championships sees athletes from all Australian States and Territories compete in a team based competition with the focus placed on accumulating points for their state or territory. The event is held each year at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra with teams living, training and competing together on site. Each year Swimming WA (SWA) selects a group of athletes and coaches to represent Western Australia and experience this unique meet in the Australian swimming calendar.
