Respiratory Care Annual Assessment Report Bachelor of Science Program (Degree Completion) I. Introduction The Respiratory Care degree completion program matriculated the first class at Oregon Institute of Technology in September 2005 with 13 students. The program focuses on offering degree completion to registered respiratory therapists who hold an associate s degree. The program was modified during the academic year to offer more varied course work opportunities for students in the program pursuing different paths within the field of respiratory care. II. Program Purpose, Objectives and Student Learning Outcomes The program faculty reviewed and approved the program purpose, objective and student learning outcomes at a faculty meeting in fall Respiratory Care Program Purpose The purpose of the Respiratory Care Degree Completion Program, a bachelor of science program, is to prepare graduates for upward and broadened mobility within the respiratory care profession. Program Educational Objective The program assists the students in achieving advanced professional goals. Expected Program Learning Outcomes Students in the program will demonstrate: 1. The ability to communicate effectively in oral, written and visual forms. 2. Advanced knowledge of management of respiratory care plans for adult, neonatal and pediatric patients. 3. The knowledge and skills necessary to obtain an additional credential or certification in an advanced practice.. Knowledge and skills in a specialized technical emphasis (advanced respiratory care, education, management, or polysomnography). 5. The ability to design and deliver instruction for undergraduate respiratory care students.

III. Three-Year Cycle for Assessment of Student Learning Outcomes The following table shows the three-year plan for assessing individual student learning outcomes. Student Learning Outcome The ability to communicate effectively in oral, written and visual forms. 2. Advanced knowledge of management of respiratory care plans for patients. Table 1. Respiratory Therapy Education Assessment Cycle IV. Planned direct and indirect measures for SLOs The respiratory care faculty met in fall 2010 to discuss assessment for the academic year. The Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) for the year were discussed and multiple places where these are taught and measured in the curriculum were identified, as shown in Appendix A. PSLO #1: The ability to communicate effectively in oral, written and visual forms. This student learning outcome was assessed in two parts: written communication and oral communication. Student work was graded using the corresponding OIT rubrics. Written Communication The performance criteria for written communication are: 1. Clearly conveys purpose and main ideas (purpose and ideas). 2. Organizes written material effectively (organization). 3. Supports main ideas adequately with detail and/or research (support).. Uses appropriate voice, word choice and sentence structure (style). 5. Uses standard English (conventions). 6. Documents support correctly and responsibly (documentation).

Direct Assessment #1 The faculty assessed this outcome winter and spring 2011 terms in RCP 1 Case Management/Credentials II, using a rubric-graded written. There were 20 senior level students involved in the assessment. The results are shown in Table 2 below. Performance Criteria Assessment Measurement Minimum Acceptable Results Method Scale Performance Purpose and Ideas 1 to 80% score 3 or 20/20 > 3 Organization 1 to 80% score 3 or 20/20 > 3 Support 1 to 80% score 3 or 20/20 > 3 Style 1 to 80% score 3 or 20/20 > 3 Conventions 1 to 80% score 3 or 20/20 > 3 Documentation 1 to 80% score 3 or 20/20 > 3 Table 2. Assessment Results for PSLO #1 written communication, spring 2011 Strengths: All students met each of the standards for written communication Weaknesses: None Actions: None

Oral Communication The performance criteria for oral communication are: 1. Supports thesis adequately with detail and/or research, and documents support correctly and responsibly (content). 2. Organizes oral material effectively (organization). 3. Presents appropriately for audience and purpose (style).. Speaks clearly and correctly, using standard English (delivery). 5. Uses visual communication effectively (visuals). Direct Assessment #2 The faculty assessed this outcome by Winter, Spring and Summer 2011 terms in RCP 2 Case Management III, using a rubric-graded oral presentation. There were 18 senior level students involved in the assessment. The results are shown in Table 3 below. Performance Criteria Assessment Method Measurement Scale Minimum Acceptable Performance Content 1 to 80% score 3 or presentation Organization 1 to 80% score 3 or presentation Style 1 to 80% score 3 or presentation Delivery 1 to 80% score 3 or presentation Visuals 1 to 80% score 3 or presentation Table 3. Assessment Results for PSLO #1 oral communication, 2011 Results Strengths: Sixteen (16) students presented made their presentations successfully at the A and B grade level. Weaknesses: Two (2) students did not complete their presentations successfully. One received an IC grade and the second student a D. Actions: None

PSLO #5. The ability to design and deliver instruction for undergraduate respiratory care students. Direct Assessment #1 The faculty assessed this outcome winter, spring and summer terms of 2011 in RCP 2 Case Management III, using rubric and observation. There were 18 senior level students involved in the assessment. The results are shown in Table below. Performance Criteria Assessment Method Measurement Scale Professional Faculty rating of 1 to Deportment respiratory care plan Purpose and Faculty rating of 1 to objectives of respiratory care learning activity plan On-time arrival and Faculty rating of 1 to readiness to deliver respiratory care instruction plan Implementation of Faculty rating of 1 to learning activities respiratory care plan Table. Assessment results for PSLO #5, RCP 2, 2011 Minimum Acceptable Performance Results 80% at 3 or 78% 80% at 3 or 89% 80% at 3 or 89% 80% at 3 or 89% Strengths: Well organized and articulated evidence based power point type presentations. Weaknesses: Some students did not come as professionally dressed as would be desired in order to serve as excellent examples to respiratory care students. Actions: Encourage distance education faculty to incorporate grading and recommendations related to professional attire.

V. Summary of Student Learning SLO #1: Oral and Written Communication Strengths: Strong in written and oral communication Weaknesses: None noted Actions: None SLO #5. The ability to design and deliver instruction for undergraduate respiratory care students. Strengths: Well organized and articulated evidence based power point presentations. Weaknesses: Higher standards for personal dress and deportment needed for a minority of students. Actions: Communicate dress and deportment expectations. VI. Recommendations regarding Assessment and the Curriculum The Respiratory Care faculty are currently working on aligning the curriculum for the online degree completion program with the on-campus program. It is expected that is transition will occur within the academic year. In the future the assessment results from on-campus and online respiratory care students will be reported in a single report.
