2 INSTRUCTIONS Please note: Graduation from the Ventura Sheriff s Academy does not guarantee an un-sponsored recruit a job in law enforcement. Although this training exceeds the minimum standards set by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training, individual police and sheriffs agencies have their own application/hiring standards which the non-sponsored recruit will have to meet before being hired. As specified in Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training regulations, re-qualification of Regular Basic Course (RBC) training is required when an individual does not become employed in a position that requires the RBC within three years of successful course completion. The academy application process consists of eight parts: 1) the application, 2) assessment test, 3) fingerprint check, 4) driver s history, 5) medical screening, 6) background investigation, 7) psychological exam, 8) POST physical agility test and (9) polygraph exam. You should begin early to ensure all phases are completed prior to the deadline. Contact the Criminal Justice Department at Ventura College if you have any questions or encounter and difficulty along the way. 1. Application Form: Required of all applicants. Complete the form entirely. Do not leave blanks. An incomplete application may be grounds for non-acceptance or delay in processing. The form should be turned in to the CTE Division at Ventura College to obtain a Live Scan authorization. MCW Rm Reading and Writing Assessment Test: NOTE: The Academy requires this test of all applicants regardless of any exemptions listed in the college handbooks. The test measures basic adult learning in English, Reading and Math. It is not a Pass/Fail test but is used as an advisory tool to determine your potential for success in the program. Date and Location TBA. **This requirement will be waived if the student has already successfully completed or assessed out of English V01 or V02. 3 Penal Code Section requires that each applicant for admission to a basic course of training certified by the Commission on POST (including the PC 832 course) that includes the carrying and use of firearms, and who is not sponsored by a local or other law enforcement agency, or is not a peace officer employed by a state or local agency, department or district, shall be required to submit written certification from the Department of Justice that the applicant has no criminal history background which would disqualify him or her from owning, possessing or having under his or her control a firearm. 4. Driver s History: Each applicant must have and maintain a valid California Driver s License. Contact the Criminal Justice Department if there are any problems with a driving history. (See #7 Below) 5. Medical Screening: There are two parts to this phase: (1) a self-history completed by you, and (2) a physical exam and medical release completed and signed by a physician or medical practitioner. $ Must be completed by April 5, Ventura College Student Health Center 4667 Telegraph Road, Bldg. Psychological Exam: As future employment in law enforcement is contingent upon passing such an exam. The psychological evaluation shall include a review by the evaluator of the following sources of information prior to making a determination about the candidate's psychological suitability.(1) Job Information Job information shall consist of the peace officer duties, powers, demands, and working conditions provided by the department per Regulation 1955(d)(1). (2) Written Assessments Written assessments shall consist of a minimum of two written psychological instruments. One of these instruments shall be designed and validated to identify patterns of abnormal behavior; the other instrument shall be designed and validated to 3

4 assess normal behavior. Both instruments shall have documented evidence of their relevance for evaluating peace officer suitability. Together, the instruments shall provide information about each candidate related to: (1) freedom from emotional and/or mental conditions that might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a peace officer, and (2) psychological suitability per the POST Psychological Screening Dimensions [Regulation 1955(d)(2)]. The psychological assessments shall be interpreted using appropriate, authorized test publisher scoring keys. If mailorder, Internet-based, or computerized test interpretations are used, the evaluator shall verify and interpret the individual results. (3) Personal History Information Personal history information includes the candidate's relevant work, life and developmental history based on information collected during the background investigation. This information may be augmented by responses on a personal history questionnaire collected as part of the psychological evaluation. (4) Psychological Interview A psychological interview shall be administered to each peace officer candidate subsequent to a review and evaluation of the results of the written assessments [Regulation 1955(e)(2)] and the candidate's personal history information [Regulation 1955(e)(3)]. Sufficient interview time shall be allotted to address all issues arising from the reviewed information and other issues that may arise during the interview. (5) Psychological Records Psychological records and relevant medical records shall be obtained from the candidate's treating health professional, if warranted and obtainable. MCW Rm You will receive a notice indicating the status of your application along with instructions for what to do next. While you wait for your notification, prepare! Make sure the following are in order: Finances to pay for the program fees and materials. Family support and outside commitments. The academy program is very demanding and will require a tremendous amount of effort and time. You will need the support of your significant others. Child-care, transportation, household bills and all personal matters must be in order to avoid scheduling conflicts during training. Personal fitness. You should have a regular running and strength exercise routine already in place prior to the start of orientation for the Academy. 5
