2 How Did We Develop OUSD Family Engagement Standards? Family Engagement Standards Vision Through meaningful family engagement, we envision a transformed school system that has directly confronted and actively addressed inequity and injustice so that every OUSD student graduates and becomes a fully engaged member of our community. STANDARDS FOR MEANINGFUL FAMILY ENGAGEMENT Standard 1 Parent/Caregiver Education Program Families are supported with parenting and child-rearing skills, understanding child and adolescent development, and setting home conditions that support children as students at each age and grade level. Assist schools in understanding families. Standard 2 Communication with Parent/Caregiver Families and school staff engage in regular, two-way, meaningful communication about student learning. Mission The mission of meaningful family engagement is to inspire, engage, and support the students, families, and communities of OUSD to become authentic co-owners of our schools who share responsibility for every student becoming college and career ready. Through community organizing, and by building OUSD capacity, we will expand participation in learning, leadership, and advocacy that results in high levels of academic achievement and life opportunities for individual students, and for entire school communities. Standard 3 Parent Volunteering Program Families are actively involved as volunteers and audiences at the school or in other locations to support students and school programs. Standard 4 Learning at Home Families are involved with their children in learning activities at home, including homework and other curriculum-linked activities and decisions. Standard 5 Shared Power and Decision Making Families and school staff are equal partners in decisions that affect children and families and together inform, influence, and create policies, practices, and programs. Standard 6 Community Collaboration & Resources Coordinate resources and services for families, students, and the school with businesses, agencies, and other groups, and provide services to the community. VALUES We value the unique and diverse experiences of families in our community. We value engaging with students and families with love, care, compassion and respect. We value students as leaders and agents of change. We value family members as leaders and agents of change. We value authentic democratic decision-making where students, families, and communities are equal partners. We value self-determination with community and family empowerment. We value bridging OUSD staff with students, families, and communities to engage in healthy struggle for positive change. 8 Region 1 Highlights Lafayette Elementary Recruitment and establishment of Building Bridges (site team for family partnerships: principal, teacher liaison, family liaison, parents) Led team process to analyze school data and identify family engagement priorities: chronic absenteeism, suspensions, and literacy Kick-off: Lafayette Elementary Attendance Program, Nov 8 th to address chronic absenteeism, 30 families impacted. Team: school nurse, school psychologist, transitional Students and families staff, attend and achieve staff, and engagement staff Parents and families introduced to supports in place, connected with support staff, & set up follow up appointments to address obstacles to regular attendance 6% increase in attendance since kick-off 8

9 Region 1 Highlights (cont d) Start up: Home-to-School Partnership, orientation & PD for teachers, Nov 13 th & Dec 19 th Established Principal-Parent Sip and Chat, 2 nd Fridays, beginning Dec 14 th In the works: parent volunteer program Sankofa Recruitment and establishment of Building Bridges (10 members including administrator) Led team process to analyze school data and identify family engagement priorities: school culture and climate, literacy, and tardiness 9

11 Region 2 Highlights Fremont High School 9 th Grade parent orientation, 57 parents Established Principal-Parent Breakfast, monthly 42 parents, 4 meetings Opened the Family Resource Center, coordination with After School to fund part time Parent Center Liaison Intake average: 10 to 15 parents per week, support with student achievement/attendance, parenting, or family-home issues 181 parents served ESL & computer classes, 3 x per week, 8 parents per class Launched Fremont Multi-Racial Parent Alliance, multiethnic parent leadership outreach team, parents recruiting other parents to become involved with school culture 30 new parent volunteers recruited & now involved with safety walks 11

12 Region 2 Highlights (cont d) Launched Parent Patrol-Safety Walk program, to increase adult presence in the school and deter conflict/violence on & around campus, training & orientation, Nov, 30 parents 10 active parents per week Allendale Elementary Opened Family Resource Room, coordination with After School to assign staff, 7 hrs, 1 day per week, 172 parents served Established Bilingual Program Inquiry team, 35 parents, 2 meetings -Discussion group to understand closure of the bilingual program and how ELD students will be supported in the absence of the program -Steering committee established to study how ELD students can be supported 12

14 Region 3 Highlights Brookfield Village Elementary Opened the Parent Center, Dec 14, in partnership with parent leaders, 25 parents Parent planning meetings to design parent center programming: classes, workshops and materials needed to support learning at home Identified and organized English Language & Computer Literacy as top priority. 1 st class scheduled for February 4, Collaboration & coordination with Oakland Literacy Coalition for Brookfield Literacy Zone 1 st Annual Reading Night with Principal Herrera and guest authors, 150 family member participants Start-up: home to school partnership. Teachers recruited to lead learning at home math & ELA workshops for families. 2 workshops scheduled: January 31 st, March 14 th 14

Launched REACH Perfect Attendance program Attendance Assemblies, recognizing perfect attendance, monthly, beginning November, Coordinating recess incentives and recognition wall, Recruitment of parent leaders & volunteers Support for 1 st Family Reading Night, with guest author, 25 families In the works: Building Bridges & Room Parents 16
