7 Chapter 1: About CA LISA Release Automation Plugin for Team Foundation Server Manager The following topics introduce the basic concepts and workflow for using the CA LISA Release Automation Plugin for Microsoft Team Foundation Server (TFS) Manager. Integrating CA LISA Release Automation with TFS enables agile deployment and sanity checking with every build. With continuous integration, development teams can easily deploy multiple applications per day. Chapter 1: About CA LISA Release Automation Plugin for Team Foundation Server Manager 7

8 Basic Concepts Basic Concepts The CA LISA Release Automation Plugin for TFS Manager utilizes TFS event listener and user-defined Build Definition Build Quality features to trigger a matching Automation Studio deployment process to run. The trigger occurs when a TFS Build Definition completes successfully or completes with specific Build Qualities. The Plugin creates from a template a new manifest file using the build run output elements. The matching Automation Studio process deploys the completed TFS build based on the content of the newly generated manifest. The CA LISA Release Automation Plugin for TFS Manager handles the following: Common configuration definitions, such as, MAC address. Build Definition configurations, such as:' TFS build qualities for updating a manifest and/or running the CA LISA Release Automation job. Location of manifest template and build run manifest. Creates the manifest template. Creates the deployment run template and/or runs the matching Automation Studio process based on Continuous deployment and/or Build Quality changed modes of operation. Depending on the Plugin Build configuration, performs one of three possible actions at the end of a successful TFS build run: Generate new manifest and trigger the matching Automation Studio process to run. Generate new manifest. Trigger the Automation Studio process to run. Note: Automation Studio always triggers the 'Latest' process. For more information, see the Automation Studio User Guide. Workflow It is assumed that you have created a TFS Build Definition for your project or are using the Nolio EmployeeTracker Demo Application. Following is the workflow from TFS build definition to CA LISA Release Automation execution: 1. In TFS: a. Edit a Build Definition. b. Assign a Build Quality, or Qualities, for triggering a matching Automation Studio process. 2. In the CA LISA Release Automation Plugin for TFS Manager UI: a. Create a Build Definition for the TFS Build Definition. b. Edit the Common Configuration as necessary. c. Edit the Build Definition Configuration. 8 Plugin for MS Team Foundation Server Manager

9 Workflow 1. Define a check-in trigger based on the Build Quality defined in the TFS definition. 2. Specify the location for the Automation Studio process to get the generated XML Manifest file for the particular build. 3. Enable creation or update of the manifest template with the changes. 4. Enable the Automation Studio job to run if triggers are met. 3. In Automation Studio: Create a matching generic process specifying the Plugin XML manifest file as input. 4. At run-time: a. If the TFS build is successful and has been configured for Continuous Deployment or the Build Qualities match trigger Build Qualities, the Plugin generates a new manifest for this build run and triggers the matching Automation Studio build deployment process. b. The Automation Studio process opens the Plugin generated XML Manifest file. c. Automation Studio executes the deployment process using the XML manifest generated by the Plugin for the build as input. 11 Chapter 2: Install CA LISA Release Automation TFS Plugin The installation process consists of: 1. Installing and verifying that the required software (see page 11) is working correctly. 2. Requesting the plugin from CA. 3. Downloading the plugin file. 4. Running the plugin setup program. All CA LISA Release Automation TFS Plugin components are stored on the local machine. This section contains the following topics: Supported TFS Versions (see page 11) Requirements (see page 11) Installation (see page 12) Access the TFS Administration Console (see page 12) Supported TFS Versions The CA LISA Release Automation TFS Plugin supports the following versions: TFS 2010 TFS 2012 This support is enabled using plugins which were developed for each version. Requirements The CA TFS Plugin requires the following Microsoft components to be installed and permissions set as follows: For TFS 2010: Microsoft Visual Studio Microsoft Team Foundation Server Microsoft.NET Framework 3.5. 12 Installation Microsoft Visual Studio Microsoft Team Foundation Server Microsoft.NET Framework 3.5 and 4. Nolio TFS Plugin Deployment Manifest defined folder set with the same user credentials as the 'Microsoft Team Foundation Server Application Pool' within Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager. Installation After downloading the plugin, run NolioPluginForTFSSetup.exe. After installation, you will see the following files: In the standard TFS plugin directory, the TFS Plugin: For TFS 2010: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Team Foundation Server 2010\Application Tier\WebServices\bin\Plugins\Nolio For TFS 2012: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Team Foundation Server 2012\Application Tier\WebServices\bin\Plugins\Nolio In the \Plugins folder: NolioPluginforTFS.dll NolioPluginforTFSBase.dll Nolio desktop icon In the \Nolio folder, XML configurations for the Plugin. Access the TFS Administration Console Generally it is not necessary to use the TFS Administration Console, but if needed, you can access the CA LISA Release Automation TFS related elements as follows: Follow these steps: 1. Click the TFS shortcut on your Desktop, or Click Start and TFS Administration Console from the All Programs list. The Team Foundation Server Administration Console opens. 2. In the folder tree, under the Application Tier folder, select Team Project Collections. 3. In the Team Project Collections list, select Nolio-tfs-demo-collection. The other folder of possible interest is Build Configuration. The Build Configuration folder contains: 12 Plugin for MS Team Foundation Server Manager

13 Access the TFS Administration Console Current Build Service information and operational controls, such as restart and stop. Event logs. 15 Chapter 3: Configure for Continuous Integration The configuration process consists of three steps: 1. Configuring a TFS Build Definition. 2. Configuring CA LISA Release Automation Plugin for the TFS Build Definition. 3. Creating a Generic Automation Studio Deployment Process. This section contains the following topics: Configure TFS Build Definition (see page 15) Configure CA LISA Release Automation Plugin for TFS Build Definition (see page 16) Create a Generic Automation Studio Deployment Process (see page 19) Configure TFS Build Definition The configuration process consists of configuring a TFS Build Definition and configuring the CA LISA Release Automation Plugin for the TFS Build Definition. For illustrative purposes in this document, references are made to the EmployeeTracker TFS Demo Application. Edit a TFS Build Definition TFS is accessed through Visual Studio. Follow these steps: 1. Launch Visual Studio. 2. Click the Solutions Explorer tab on the right panel. 3. In the left panel click Open Project and select EmployeeTracker, or select the project from the Recent Projects list. The solution loads. 4. Click the Team Explorer tab on the right panel. The Nolio-tfs-demo-collection tree opens. 5. Expand the Builds folder under the EmployeeTracker Demo Application. 6. To manage build qualities, in the Build menu on the VS toolbar, select Manage Build Qualities. The Edit Build Qualities dialog box opens. 7. Select, or add, a Build Quality to be used as a trigger to the CA LISA Release Automation TFS Plugin for this definition. Chapter 3: Configure for Continuous Integration 15

16 Configure CA LISA Release Automation Plugin for TFS Build Definition 8. Right-click on the build definition and select Edit Build Definition. The build definition tab opens in the main panel. 9. In the left panel definition list, select Trigger to open the check-in trigger definitions panel. 10. Select Manual from the check in trigger options: Manual - Check-ins do not trigger a new build. Continuous Integration - Build each check-in. Rolling Builds - Accumulate check-ins until the prior build finishes. Gated Check-in - Accept check-ins only if the submitted changes merge and build successfully. Schedule - Build every week on selected days and time. 11. In the left panel definition list, select Build Defaults to specify the build controller and drop folder (staging location) for the definition. 12. Click Save in the File menu. Add a New Build Definition Follow these steps: To create a new build definition, select the Builds folder and right-click to select New Build Definition. Configure CA LISA Release Automation Plugin for TFS Build Definition The CA LISA Release Automation Plugin for TFS Manager allows you to control and configure plugin behavior for different Build Definitions. Open CA LISA Release Automation Plugin for TFS Manager UI Follow these steps: 1. Click the Start button and expand All programs. 2. From the Nolio program group, select Nolio Plugin for TFS Manager. The Nolio Build Configuration Editor window opens, displaying the last TFS Build Definition worked on. The name appears in the title bar. 3. To create a new Nolio build definition, select New in the File menu. The Enter build name dialog box opens. a. Enter a Build Name matching an existing TFS Build Definition. b. Configure the new build. 4. To open an existing Nolio build definition, select Open in the File menu. 16 Plugin for MS Team Foundation Server Manager

17 Configure CA LISA Release Automation Plugin for TFS Build Definition Edit Common Configuration The Common configuration is common to all build definitions. Follow these steps: 1. From the Edit menu, select Common configuration. 2. Enter the appropriate values in the following entry boxes: Nolio server address (MAC address). Nolio user - Should be the user with execution permissions to all processes in the CA environment you assign and generate manifests for. Nolio password. 3. To save changes, select Save in the File menu. Note: Continuous Deployment selection values are current from the CA LISA Release Automation application. Edit Build Definition Configuration Edit the Build Configuration to define the manifest and build quality change values on which to trigger the Automation Studio process. Follow these steps: 1. In the Edit menu, select Edit Build <BuildDefinition> Configuration. The Build Configuration Editor window opens. 2. Click Deployment Manifest to open center panel with following definition options: Manifest template directory path - Location of the manifest template used to generate live manifest for a job run. Manifest directory path - Output path for live manifest generated from template. In each case, there is a Browse button for locating the path. Chapter 3: Configure for Continuous Integration 17

18 Configure CA LISA Release Automation Plugin for TFS Build Definition 3. Click Continuous Deployment to open panel to define the options for build completion events. The continuous deployment definition window opens. Continuous Deployment is for Build Completion events. 4. In the Nolio application list, select the application for the build process. 5. In the Nolio environment name list, select the environment. 6. In the Nolio process list, select the process to run. Note: CA TFS Plugin always triggers the 'Latest' process. For more information, see the Automation Studio User Guide. 7. In the Nolio process parameters table, the Application level parameters and values appear for the selected process. All parameters defined in Automation Studio for use with plugin must be defined as 'user input'. If you have a special parameter named 'manifest_path', the editor substitutes the Manifest directory path value defined in the Deployment Manifest section. 8. In the Servers list of servers assigned to the environment, select the servers on which to run the process. If no servers are selected, the job executes on all servers within the environment. 9. Select the Update manifest check box to update the manifest file with settings. 10. Select the Run job check box to run the job immediately. If not selected, only the manifest files are created. 11. Select the Wait for Nolio job completion check box to have the plugin wait until the CA process completes. 12. In the Nolio job timeout box, enter the number of seconds to wait for a reply from the CA Web server. 13. Click the Add QualityChanged Section button to add Quality changed parameters for builds meeting the quality filter. For each Quality filter, you can define deployment parameters as for Continuous Deployment. Quality names, while not case sensitive, must match those defined in TFS. 14. Click Remove QualityChanged Section to delete the quality filter for the definition. 15. 19 Create a Generic Automation Studio Deployment Process An asterisk (*) appears to the right of 'Nolio Build Configuration Editor' in the title bar. 'Yes' appears in the Modified column of changed sections. To save changes, select Save in the File menu. After saving the definition, the asterisk in the title bar and the notification under the Modified column no longer appear. Create a Generic Automation Studio Deployment Process In the Automation Studio UI, create a deployment process with the same name as the TFS Build Definition. The process should open the build specific manifest file defined as a special Application level parameter named 'Manifest_Path'. At run time the Plugin editor substitutes in 'Manifest_Path' the value of Manifest directory path defined in the Deployment Manifest section. By reading the Deployment Manifest, the Automation Studio process retrieves the name and location of files to deploy, the servers to use, and the Applications parameters and values to use during the process run. When creating the deployment process, you may set parameters and values at the Application level. Note: All parameters to be used in the deployment process must be defined as 'user input' in Automation Studio. Chapter 3: Configure for Continuous Integration 19

21 Chapter 4: View Run Time Progress and Status After a build is started on TFS, you can follow the build progress from completion on TFS to its deployment using Automation Studio UI. This section contains the following topics: Open Event Viewer (see page 21) View LISA RA Deployment Process (see page 22) Open Event Viewer You can view the general progress of a TFS build using Build Explorer. You can also use Event Viewer to examine the details of the TFS Plugin build completion activities and status. TFS plugin related event logs are available for viewing and managing using the Microsoft Management Console Event Viewer. Follow these steps: 1. In the Start search box, type 'Event Viewer' and press Enter. The Event Viewer (local) folder tree opens. 2. Open the Applications and Services Logs folder. 3. Select Nolio. 4. Using the Actions in the right panel, find and view event logs. Chapter 4: View Run Time Progress and Status 21

22 View LISA RA Deployment Process Each step in the process is recorded as an event. For example, possible events are: Event Handler exit: Approved=True Message=Nolio updated manifest for build <build_definition>. Updated deployment manifest which includes the definition name, date, time, and name of the manifest file in the format of <build_definition><timestamp>.xml. Started processing quality changed event for <build_definition>, new quality level is <build_quality>. If the TFS build was successful and the Build Quality criteria were met, the plugin starts the matching Automation Studio deployment process. View LISA RA Deployment Process In Automation Studio you can follow the progress of the deployment process using a variety of UI options. For information about viewing and controlling process jobs, see "Process Execution Pane" in Automation Studio User Guide. Process Execution Pane In the Automation Studio UI, select the Environments panel and select the deployment process which matches the CI build. The process execution pane appears. View a Process Run The Process View displays the execution of the process currently being run. It does so using the same process diagram that was designed for a given environment in Automation Studio. However, the graphic depiction of the process is dynamic, thereby enabling you to visually trace the run's progress. 22 Plugin for MS Team Foundation Server Manager

23 View LISA RA Deployment Process View Process Details The Detailed View displays the current status, overall progress, and current step being executed both by server type, and each of the individual instances of each type, involved in the process run. Process run status Instance Status Progress Current Step Displays The name of the server type or the name of the server. Current status of the server. Current progress. Current running action on this server. When a process starts, one of the standard preparation steps not contained in the designed process is copying files from the central server to the target agents. The progress of copying files to the agents is shown in the Detailed View tab with the following information: In the Status column, 'File Distribution' appears. In the Progress column the percentage of the total files copied appears. In the Current Step column, the number of bytes copied and the total number of bytes to be copied appears. View Process Events The Events View displays a table of notifications related to the execution of a process. Chapter 4: View Run Time Progress and Status 23
