2 What is Arts Award? Arts Award s unique qualifications support children and young people to grow as artists and arts leaders, inspiring them to connect to and take part in the wider arts world. The flexible framework, which is endorsed by Arts Council England, develops creativity, leadership and communication skills. Arts Award is available at five levels, four of which are on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). The highest level carries UCAS points and there is also an introductory level. Young people can progress through all five levels, or start at any stage. Why offer Arts Award as part of your practice? accredit your existing arts offer Train as an Arts Award adviser and support the children and young people you work with to achieve a nationally recognised qualification. add value to your practice Using Arts Award s flexible framework within your programmes and projects will ensure measurable outcomes and reflection throughout. work in partnership and kick-start a project Include Arts Award as part of your offer to help establish new partnerships with schools, youth programmes or arts and cultural organisations, and to attract participants to your projects. Use Arts Award to start new projects Arts Award is managed by Trinity College London in association with Arts Council England working with 10 regional Bridge organisations. 3 Success stories Accredit your offer Makeup artist, Stella Photis, runs her Blazing Sables Makeup Artist Training Programme for schools and colleges where students achieve their Bronze, Silver and Gold through pathway programmes. Each level supports students in developing their career as makeup artists and industry professionals. Arts Award has allowed them to excel in areas they enjoy as well as reward their achievements with nationally recognised qualifications. I instantly recognised what an amazing opportunity it would be for me to run my unique and specialist programmes as a pathway through Arts Award, and it works beautifully... You re only limited by your imagination! Strengthen ties with the local community Hayley Keary is a freelance artist and founder of craft studio Busy Bees, which offers arts and craft sessions to young people in the local community. Bronze and Silver Arts Award are delivered through weekly sessions to 11 and 14-year-olds. Hayley also runs one-to-one sessions to offer additional support for those doing Silver Award. The young people take part in a range of activities from working with textiles to paper craft and felting. A group of Silver achievers organised an exhibition of their work at the village hall. Busy Bees Blazing Sables photo Stella Photis I love Arts Award! It s made me feel more confident in my work, and it s raised Busy Bees profile. I love that I can say that we offer a recognised qualification. Arts Award is great in that the young people take pride in their achievements.

4 Add value to your practice Dance development artist Victoria Frayard delivers Arts Award Discover and Explore through after-school sessions at Offside Dance Company. The young people learn dance techniques, compose their own choreography and work towards a final performance. As a freelance practitioner, Victoria has also delivered Arts Award through youth projects and to young people at risk. She plans to work with local arts organisations to support and enrich their programmes. It has been very rewarding to be able to offer another aspect to my projects through Arts Award. It has taught me a great deal about my own practice and has enabled me to grow professionally. The response from schools and organisations that I have worked with has been really positive. Establish partnerships Freelance adviser Alison Deering works in partnership with a variety of organisations (mainstream schools, special schools and galleries) in delivering Arts Award to young people with individual needs. She has used Bronze Award to accredit a range of programmes within these settings and is currently working with Leeds Arts Gallery to develop resources and workshops for special schools at Explore level. Arts Award has enabled Alison to deliver creative arts within schools in a way that enriches the curriculum; the programme provides a framework for personalised learning and meaningful opportunities for all students, regardless of ability. Hadrian Primary School photo Fiona Kelly For staff involved in my Arts Award projects, it has shown that unpredictable outcomes are the amazing aspects of teaching and learning, rather than teaching to predictable targets and levels of attainment. 5 Make Arts Award work for you Arts Award can be delivered through any arts, cultural or media activities. Some of the ways independent practitioners deliver Arts Award include: one-off intensive projects such as summer schools regular work with groups after-school clubs or curriculum projects youth or community arts projects artist in residence programmes alternative provision activities You can find helpful planning tools and case studies from independent practitioners at artsaward.org.uk/practitioner Arts Award adviser status belongs to you. You can set up multiple centres or work on a range of projects. Support Once you ve trained as an Arts Award adviser, you ll be able to access ongoing support and resources via our helpdesk and website, and attend free support sessions. Find out more at artsaward.org.uk/support Regional support is also available through a national network of 10 Bridge organisations. These organisations are funded by Arts Council England to drive participation in Arts Award across each region. Find out more at artsaward.org.uk/regions Glenthorne High School photo Kirsten Holst

Advisers can be artists, practitioners, arts educators, learning officers or anyone who has experience of working with young people. Young people aged up to 25 can take part. Discover and Explore are designed for ages five and above, and Bronze, Silver and Gold are open to 11 and above. At all levels, young people collect evidence along the way, which is assessed as part of their work. I did my Arts Award training when I had just started my freelance career. It has been an advantage in terms of being selected to work for organisations, planning projects of my own and applying for funding. It has definitely increased my employability and what I can offer as a freelance practitioner. Nicola Parkin, artist and designer Getting started To get started with Arts Award, train as an Arts Award adviser by attending training for the levels you want to run. Courses are available across the country, throughout the year. For information on running costs visit artsaward.org.uk/costs Book onto training to get started and add value to your practice with Arts Award! artsaward.org.uk/training Copyright 2015 Trinity College London (06JC)
