5 WHY WAS THIS WORKGROUP FORMED? Administrators may not understand how to support and facilitate an athletic training program Never worked with athletic trainer in past experiences Mentor Practice to fullest

6 WHY WAS THIS WORKGROUP FORMED? A team physician may not fully understand role of an athletic trainer within the sports medicine team School doctor acts as team physician Never on side line before How can they understand role Private practice-focus Physician volunteering time Selected by institution/school What type of physician?

7 WHY WAS THIS WORKGROUP FORMED? Institutions are hiring athletic trainers for the first time Uncertainties exist regarding the administrative authority and supervision of the athletic trainer Parent says their child can play, even if it is against medical advice Athletic training is: Young profession Fast growing Outside physicians clears an athlete but AT doesn t agree AT have authority to overturn? Recent graduates might lack the confidence and experience to meet the challenges of a new or difficult program Administratively Might be overwhelmed with all the paperwork or administrative duties Authoritatively Coach does not listen to athletic trainer s instructions

9 WHY WAS THIS WORKGROUP FORMED? There is a wide variance Administration of the sports medicine program Should the sports medicine staff be under athletic department or health services? The chain of command Situations where AT reports to a coach The selection and evaluation of the sports medicine team Should a coach or administrator evaluate the medical decisions an AT makes?

Divided workgroup up into subgroups September-November 2012-All subgroups met and discussed their subject area December 2012-Full group met to review subgroup s work
