Performance Management Basics and Resources Presented by: Jessie Jones, MPHI, Office of Accreditation and Quality Improvement August 27 th,

What is Performance Management? The practice of using data to improve performance! Performance Management is a: Systematic process aimed at helping achieve an organization s mission and strategic goals by improving effectiveness, empowering employees, and streamlining the decision-making process. Public Health Foundation Dynamic process that is designed to better understand program operations, monitor outcomes, and ultimately, help [agencies] become high performing organizations, which produce positive outcomes. It involves regular, ongoing performance measurement, reporting, analysis, and program modification. - Performwell.org 2

Three Good Reasons For Performance Management! Be accountable and improve performance: By helping staff within agencies work together across individual programs toward a common agency purpose and creating the most efficient and effective path to reach agency goals. Help your agency know which path is the right path: By establishing performance standards, tracking performance measures, regularly reporting progress on standards, and getting better through quality improvement where gaps in performance are identified Achieve National Accreditation: Optimal standards set forth by the Public Health Accreditation Board 3

PHAB Domain 9 establishes standards for public health agencies use of a performance management system & the implementation of a quality improvement process. 30 Performance Management & QI Why is Performance Management important? Performance Management is essential to building a culture of quality in your organization: Learn more about building a culture of quality with our Guidebook: 30

Growing Momentum: Users Far & Wide! 304 users have learned about performance management as a result of the Primer. Participants represent state, local, tribal, and territorial public health agencies and many others. 31

COMMENTS FROM USERS.... Here s a sample of what users are saying about the primer: Training was excellent easy to follow. Especially liked how subject areas are broken down with ample examples to further demonstrate content. It was helpful and I will share with colleagues! Thank you for making this training available. "Embracing Quality in Public Health" is a valued resource for me and now this training will be also. I plan to share it with those around me here [in my state]. I think it is an excellent introduction to performance management. It does not overwhelm the viewer and is readily understandable. Examples are on point. Excellent way to present performance management using baby steps. Thank you. This is an excellent resource for those starting out in PM and QI. Thank you for this training tool. Great, informative a very thorough online training! 32
