2 What is Performance Management? The practice of using data to improve performance! Performance Management is a: Systematic process aimed at helping achieve an organization s mission and strategic goals by improving effectiveness, empowering employees, and streamlining the decision-making process. Public Health Foundation Dynamic process that is designed to better understand program operations, monitor outcomes, and ultimately, help [agencies] become high performing organizations, which produce positive outcomes. It involves regular, ongoing performance measurement, reporting, analysis, and program modification. - Performwell.org 2

3 Three Good Reasons For Performance Management! Be accountable and improve performance: By helping staff within agencies work together across individual programs toward a common agency purpose and creating the most efficient and effective path to reach agency goals. Help your agency know which path is the right path: By establishing performance standards, tracking performance measures, regularly reporting progress on standards, and getting better through quality improvement where gaps in performance are identified Achieve National Accreditation: Optimal standards set forth by the Public Health Accreditation Board 3

4 PHAB Domain 9 establishes standards for public health agencies use of a performance management system & the implementation of a quality improvement process. If your health department wants to be accredited through PHAB, you will need a performance management system that operates at the organizational level, & a quality improvement process that is integrated across programs. PHAB Domain 9 4

5 Why is Performance Management Important? Performance management allows public health agencies to track their capabilities and determine what needs to be further developed to improve the quality of services. Performance management also allows agencies to remain sustainable and nimble when funding levels change. 5

8 Why Did We Develop the Primer? The training was created to aid in understanding performance management and quality improvement public health. To provide this information in a practical, easy to understand manner using public health language and examples To provide a useable training for local and tribal public health agencies in Michigan and beyond Certificate of completion may be used to provide documentation of staff training in performance management and quality improvement for PHAB Domain 9 As part of MDCH s efforts to build capacity in the state for quality and participation in national accreditation 8
