There was a significant association between practice towards self care age, type of the family, educational status, dietary habits, marital status and duration of diabetes. There was a no significant association between practice towards self care gender, religion, information about diabetes and occupational status.
NURSING IMPLICATIONS The findings of the study have implications in various areas of nursing practice, nursing education, nursing administration and nursing research. Nursing Practice: Several implications can be drawn from the present study for nursing practice. As diabetes mellitus places the patients in several restrictions and life style changes, the educational material prepared by nursing personnel both in the hospital and community can be helpful in prevention and management of complications of diabetes mellitus, reducing mortality and morbidity and also can help the diabetic patients to be self responsible for their own care through expert nursing practice and teaching. Thus it improves the quality of life for the individual diabetic patients, but also for the family and the community. The complications due to diabetes mellitus place the diabetic patients in a several psychological stress as well as depression because of their life style changes. Providing instructional materials and teaching programmes by knowledgeable nurses help the patient to adjust physically and psychologically by creating confidence in them to prevent complications. The nurse plays an important role in the prevention of complications, as well as promotion of health. Education programmes with effective teaching strategies make it easy for people to understand the concepts of providing quality care in a better way. Having knowledge about the complications motivates people to follow healthy practices in their daily life. Health education should be given through a variety of methods like instruct, pamphlets, information booklet, mass media, self instructional module etc. Any teaching plan which is easy, clear and attractive provides interest for the leaner to follow the instructions easily. Nurses have to impose themselves in all areas of community health nursing practices to help people in leading a healthy life style.
Nursing Education: The curriculum of nursing consists of awareness related to health information and appropriate strategy for imparting that knowledge. In the present era of primary healthcare, more emphasis is given for developing self-care abilities of the individuals. Nursing education should give emphasis more on patients to impart health information regarding prevention and management of complications of diabetes mellitus and also develop self care abilities. This can be best done by equipping the nursing curriculum with disseminate of health information using various methods of educational technology. The information booklet can be used by the nursing personnel for educating the diabetic patients. Nursing Administration: The nurse administrator must take up the challenges to organize continuous nursing education programmes for the nursing personnel and motivate them to prepare instructional material like information booklet and to conduct patient educational programme beneficial to the diabetic patients and the community. Nursing Research: Today if we look at the world diabetes mellitus are gaining foothold in all developing countries like India, leading to high morbidity and mortality. There is a need for early detection and prevention of complications of diabetes mellitus. Health research studies need to concentrate on emanating newer method of teaching, focusing on people s interest, its quality and cost effectiveness.
RECOMMENDATIONS: A similar study may be replicated with an experimental design with different setting like- community setting, A comparative study can be undertaken to assess the knowledge & practice of diabetic patients after using other teaching strategies i.e. booklet, SIM and planned teaching programme. A comparative study can be carried out on nursing personnel working in private & government hospital. An extensive teaching strategy protocol can be developed in all aspects separately. Example, Diabetic foot care, prevention of diabetic neuropathy SUGGESTION: Adequate nurse patient s ratio should be maintained in the medical ward for the better care of the patients. Regular home visit can be conducted to screen the diabetic patients for the health personnel. There should be a hospital policy for providing in-service education to staff for updating their knowledge about diabetes. Nursing faculties encourage the student nurses to give health education regarding self care activities. SUMMARY: The purpose of the study was to assess the knowledge and practice of self care activities of diabetes mellitus among diabetic patients in selected hospital at M.L.B. Medical College, Jhansi. The whole study was cost effective, simple and carried out in an acceptable way to assess the level of knowledge and practice of self care activities of diabetes mellitus among diabetic patients.
The result shows that the diabetic patients had inadequate knowledge and practice regarding self care activities of diabetes mellitus; hence the researcher felt the need to focus the results in general. So the health personnel help to improve the knowledge and practice of self care activities of diabetes mellitus among diabetic patients.
