1 ART 2501: Painting Investigation of Color Summer B Instructor: Lydia Dildilian Credit Hours: 3 Meeting Times/Location: M-W 9:30 to 12:15 and T-H 9:30 to 1:45 FAD 105 Office hours/location: M-T after class/fad 105 Instructor dildillk@ufl.com Instructor Phone: Class/Building Codes: FAD * FAD 2nd Floor Stairwell (for after hours access) * FAD 1st Floor Main Doors by Elevator-- Gator One Card Swipe Course Description: This course investigates the visual language of painting and introduces the fine arts major to techniques and concepts relevant to painting including a comprehensive study of lights, darks and color. This course focuses on building foundation skill in principles of art and design. Course Objectives: The main objective of this course is for students to become familiar with handling paint to create dynamic value structures and compositions. You will employ a variety of techniques to expand upon your visual language. Critique sessions will continue to develop your abilities to talk about your work and ideas. You will also be expected to apply critical insight to the work of your colleagues. Topics: Form and Light Figure Ground: figure/ground reversal, figure/ground tension, figure/ground pulse, convex/concave edges Notan: Black and white shape relationships. Shape interaction: Positive and Negative Color Theory and Applied Color: Mutual intensification: Principles of interaction in value, chroma, and hue (temperature and compliments). Composition: The Gestalt Principles: Applying principles of the united whole, using value, color, form, shape, as a tool of balance. Color/space Color Usage (optical, psychological, local color)
2 Color Mixing (additive, subtractive) Visual Organization (elements and principles of design) Harmony, Variety, Balance, Proportion, Dominance, Movement, Economy Required Text Course reading posted on Canvas Hawthorne on Color and as assigned by instructor Topical Course Outline (Tentative) Week 1 use of colorism in the effect of darks & lights Notan and Figure Ground. Notan is a Japanese convention that has had a great influence on modern painting in the western world. The notan system balances light and dark shapes into interactive wholes that seem both fixed and dynamic at the same time. Figure-Ground: Studies in black & white cut paper will introduce the idea of the expanded square. The best of these studies will be selected as a model for a painting which demonstrates an understanding of the notan elements. Criteria are: use of figure-ground interchange use of shape interaction use of paint & touch use of colorism in the effect of darks & lights Week 2 Topic Chiaroscuro, Form, and Light Forms & Light: Still-life studies, composition studies, and ultimately a fully developed painting which demonstrates an understanding of the chiaroscuro elements. Palette preparation for acrylic painting Criteria are: the logic of light & shadows use of the six (6) chiaroscuro elements use of paint & touch Week 3
3 SEEING SPOTS Palette preparation for color oil painting, color wheel, reproducing color charts a series of still-life paintings in oil, using Charles Hawthorne's painting method of seeing and painting in color. [Hawthorne on Painting Dover] (drawing studies and four paintings on stretched canvas, min. 80 sq. in. each) Criteria are: use of skills in seeing color and coordinating them with your theoretic knowledge about color use of color to create a convincing sense of space use of convincing sense of light, both in the sense of illumination as well as the luminosity of color use of color shapes and movement Week 4 CHROMATIC ZONES Painting in modern techniques with emphasis on colorfields and interactive relations of shapes and space. (drawing and gouache studies and one large painting in oil sq. in.) Week 5-6 ONE SELF DESIGNED PAINTING PROJECTS Students will draft a contract for the professor proposing three separate painting projects. These projects must reflect elements learned during the first half of the semester, however, students are encouraged to create more personal and imaginative work. The one projects could be a series of small works. The project topic will be one the topic: The Current State of Painting. There will be readings assigned to go along with this project. Evaluation 90% 5 Projects including exercises 10% Participation - Participation in class workdays, discussions, and critiques is expected and will reflect in your participation grade. Final cleanup will also factor into this grade. Class Attendance Policy Attendance is required. Three unexcused absences are allowed. More than 3 absences will result in a loss in the student's final grade by one. Six absences will result in a failing grade. Excessive tardiness will also affect your grade. Roll will be taken at the beginning of class. Being late three times will equal one absence. Lateness of more than 30 minutes or early departure is considered an absence. Announced changes to the course calendar etc. demand your presence in class. Attending class unprepared for a discussion, critique, or workday will be considered an absence. A missed class does not constitute an extension of an assignment.
4 LATE WORK POLICY Assignments are due on the date stated in the course calendar. No late assignments will be accepted unless contracted with instructor. Please communicate well in advance if you know your assignment will be late. Late assignment will drop one (1) letter grade per class period late. An absence does not constitute an extension on the due date. If you miss or do not show up for crit your grade will automatically drop a letter grade. Grading Scale A , A , B , B 86-84, B , C , C 76-74, C , D , D 66-64, D , E 59-0 (Note: A grade of C- or below will not count toward major requirements) UF Grading policy: The basic outlines for grading criteria: 1. 5 and turn in the signature page to the instructor on the first day of class to insure the students understand rules and regulations. ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY The university s policies regarding academic honesty, the honor code, and student conduct related to the honor code will be strictly enforced. Full information regarding these policies is available at and Students are expected to provide feedback on the quality of instruction in this course. Evaluations are conducted online at given speicif times when they are open. Summary results of these assessments are available to students at the above websit. Additional policies for students in the SAAH Students must turn off cell phones, and music devices during class time. Studio Use The studio is for your use outside of class time. You will be given the combination to the studio, it is for YOUR use only. Students are expected to follow studio guidelines at all times. The closest telephone is on the second floor/se corner. There is a first aid kit in each room as well as a sharp container for your use. LOCKERS / STORAGE The SAAH is not responsible for items in lockers. Please watch for posted signs on lockers regarding their use. Each student must share a locker with two students. You are responsible for keeping the locker form attached to your lockers at all times. Lockers will be cleaned out at the end of each semester. When storing materials it is advisable to label them with, the course title and the instructor s name. The SAAH is not responsible for items left in classrooms. 6 Drawing Pencils: 2h, h, hb, b, 2b, 3b, 4b- ** You should have at least 3 of these. -Pencil Sharpener Acrylic: Ivory Black and Titanium White Black Construction Paper Oil paint: Buy one of each- Hanza Yellow or Cadmium Hue Yellow Medium, Azo Yellow or Cadmium Hue Yellow light, burnt umber Buy one of each- Napthol Red or Quinacradone Red Light or Medium, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red Light or Medium Buy one of each- Phthalocyanine Blue or Pthalo Blue or Thalo Blue, Dioxazine Purple Buy one of each- Ultramarine Blue, Viridian Green, Yellow ochre, Titanium White large size or 2 or 3 of the.37ml tubes, Zinc White, Paynes Gray, van dyke brown. ****You should have 15 tubes of paint by the time this is all done and said. Brushes: white natural bristle brushes Round: # 3, 4, 8 Brushes- Long Handled bristle brushes Flat: # 2, 4, 6, 9- Filbert: # 10, 12, 16 others as needed Glass Palette- can use old picture frames glass, make sure it is a large size, like 12x16 or 14x 18 Make sure they can fix on the movible tables in the painting room. Palette knife- Flat blade Canvas and Lumber - Purchase after size and shape have been determined and building and stretching canvas demo Each student will receive 3 yards of canvas; you must provide any additional. SA+AH CONTAINER POLICY There are 2 types of labels used in the SA+AH-- yellow and white. Both labels are found at the red MSDS box and are supplied by the SA+AH. Each is used for a different purpose. White: All new and or used product in containers (hazardous or what might be perceived as hazardous -i.e. watered down gesso, graphite solutions, satellite containers of solvents, powders, spray paints, fixatives, oils, solvents, etc...) must be labeled within the SA+AH to identify their contents. Labels can be found at the MSDS box in each studio and work area. All containers must be marked with your name, contents and date opened. All secondary/satellite containers for hazardous materials must be marked with content, your name and the date opened. All unmarked containers will be disposed of with no notice. Yellow:
7 WHEN HAZARDOUS ITEMS ARE DESIGNATED AS WASTE. All containers must have a yellow label identifying the contents that are designated as trash for weekly EHS pick up. - Flammable solid containers (red flip top) must have a yellow hazardous waste label on the outside (top). - 5-gallon jugs must have a yellow hazardous waste label on the outside. - Fibrous containers must have a yellow hazardous waste label on the outside (top). - Each item in the blue bin must have a yellow hazardous waste label. Note: Hazardous Waste labels should include all constituents in the waste mixture as well as an approximate percentage of the total for that item and must add up to 100%. Labels should also include the Bldg and room number of the shop generating the waste along with the Waste Manager for your area; this is located on the SWMA sign posted at the sink or at the Waste Management Area. Appendix D: Health and Safety Area Specific Information: Painting 4. Area Rules All users of the studio classrooms are expected to follow studio guidelines at all times. If you have any questions, ask your instructor. Follow all SA+AH Health and Safety handbook guidelines. Follow the SA+AH Satellite Waste Management Chart in the classroom and other health & safety guidelines posted for your media. Keep the Satellite Waste Management Area (SWMA) clean and organized. Follow the SWMA guidelines posted. Do not prop classroom doors. Doors are to remain closed to ensure the building HVAC and ventilation systems work properly. FAD 105 and 107 are solvent free rooms. There is no ventilation in these rooms. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are available in each SA+AH work area. Keep solvent fumes to a minimum by covering containers in use. Clean up after yourself. No hazardous materials down sinks. Store all flammables in the flammable cabinet, Keep flammable cabinet closed at all times. All hazardous material (many art supplies) containers must be marked with your name, contents and date opened by using the white labels provided at the SWMA area at the MSDS boxes.
8 All Hazardous Waste must be labeled with the yellow labels found at the SWMA (use this label when item is designated as trash). Any unmarked containers will be disposed of without notice. Practice best practices for material handling. If you have questions about a material, ask your instructor for guidance. If you bring an item into the classroom, be sure you have the MSDS form filed for the material used. No aerosol cans may be sprayed in any classroom/studio in the SAAH. A spray booth is located in FAC room 211A. Wear nitrile gloves when handling hazardous materials. These are provided in your classroom studios. Remove all trash that does not fit in trashcans to the dumpster on the south side of FAC. Any trash that does not fit in the trash can must be immediately taken to the dumpster. All oversized trash (has any length that exceeds 4 feet in any direction) must be taken to the dumpster on the south side FAC and placed beside the dumpster in the area designated for oversized trash. Broken glass must be packed inside paper and labeled on the outside as broken glass and walked to the dumpster. Glass with hazardous materials must be wrapped, labeled with a filled out yellow hazardous waste labels and placed in the blue bin at the SWMA. The trash guidelines are to ensure the safety of anyone encountering the trash. Liquids, medical waste, yard waste, appliances and pallets are prohibited from disposal in the dumpster. No eating, consumption of alcohol or smoking is permitted in the studios. Clean up after yourself- wipe down surfaces (easels, drawing boards, stools with a wet towel). Do not block doorways. Do not block access to lights. Do not remove furniture from rooms or borrow furniture from rooms without permission from the area coordinators. Do not create daisy chains with multiple electric cords. Store all flammables in the flammable cabinet. Keep flammable cabinet closed at all times. Follow guidelines for oil based brush cleaning found at each SWMA. First aid kits are found in each studio. Notify your instructor if supplies are low. Locate the nearest eyewash unit and familiarize yourself with its functions. Report any safety issues IMMEDIATELY to your instructor. All courses must engage in an end of the semester clean up. In case of emergency, call campus police at , you are in UF Fine Arts Building D (Building # 269), and then give the operator your location (room #).
