Updates & Announcements November 24th-28th The Kiwanis Scholarship Program seeks to recognize exceptional student performance, both academically and through broader community involvement. The application is now available to all potential graduates! Students will pick up an application from Kim and must hand in completed applications by Tuesday, November 25th. Three students will be selected to represent Wellstone during the Kiwanis Luncheons and be required to submit a more in depth application. Of the three, one will be selected as the recipient of a $2,000 scholarship during the May 19th Scholarship Luncheon. The Career and College Center is open during lunch and before and after school. Students are more than welcome to come in to use the computers for college and career research even when Kim is not in! PSEO deadline at MCTC for the Spring 2014 semester (January 12th start date) is December 1st (all materials, including test scores must be submitted by this date). PSEO is a great opportunity for students to dually earn high school credit and college credit. Students must take the Accuplacer and test at college level or meet the Accuplacer requirements for the courses they are interested in taking. Students may see their counselor or Kim for more information. Youth Career Awareness Program (YCAP) is a 6-week summer program for Juniors and Seniors to learn more about the various technical programs offered at Dunwoody. Students will take college level courses and work on web-based academic software. Students who complete the course and will be receive a $10,000/year scholarship (per year for two years) to attend Dunwoody. Applications are available now and will be due on May 1st. II. Scholarships The Potential Graduate Advisory will be used to promote scholarships. Students interested in researching scholarships can see me to get their log-in information for their Naviance account, which has an updated scholarship database. Violet Richardson Award recognizes young women, ages who make the community and world a better place through volunteer efforts such as fighting drugs, crime and violence; cleaning up the environment, and working to end discrimination and poverty. (deadline 12/1) AXA Achievement Scholarship recognizes one winner from each state who possess the following qualities: ambition and drive; determination to set and reach goals; respect for self, family and community; and ability to succeed in college. (deadline 12/1) Americanism Essay Contest is an essay contest for students grades This year s essay them is Why I Am Proud to Be and American. (deadline 12/1) Go Cosmo Scholarship Program is a scholarship contest to attend Regency Beauty Institute in St. Louis Park. (deadline 12/4) Scholars of Distinction program nurtures and recognizes distinguished achievement by highly motivated, self directed students. Students may not apply for Scholars of Distinction Awards in Leadership, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Theater Arts. NFIB Young Entrepreneur Awards program was established to raise awareness among the nation s youth of the critical role that private enterprise and entrepreneurship play in building America. 3 Alice Madden Barton Scholarship Program is for current students interested in cosmetology or barbering. (deadline 12/31) Hispanic Scholarship Fund General College Scholarships are designed to assist US citizen of Hispanic heritage to obtain a college degree. (deadline 1/15) IV. CollegeCrewMpls is a safe space for new MPS grauates to share their college journey with current MPS students and offer advice, resources, and encouragement! Roadtrip Nation helps students explore different careers through short, 2-5 minute interviews. Career videos can be sorted based on themes related to careers. 4 Code U is an interactive, online workshop and planning guide to help students think through the process of planning for college, learn how to choose a college, and how best to prepare for a health career. FastWeb is an online scholarship database that will match students to scholarships based on their profile. Federal Student Aid, a part of the U.S. Department of Education and is a great resource for students who have questions about federal student aid. NavigateMN provides post-secondary resources for undocumented students, including a list of scholarships for undocumented students. VI. Career & Community Opportunities Educational Talent Search (ETS) at Minneapolis Community & Technical College is a federally funded TRIO program that provides academic, cultural, and leadership support for high school students. They are committed to providing free educational, vocational, career, and financial aid information to first generation, low-income students. See Mrs. Prado for more information! Scrubs, Gloves & Microscopes (SGM) is a hands-on health career exploration opportunity for high school students currently in grades SGM gives students the opportunity to briefly experience life in a health profession. Each program is 3-4 hours long. There is a cost, but fee waivers may be available to students with financial need. Pillsbury United Communities - Furthering Achievement through a Network of Support (FANS) prepares youth in grades 8-12 for college. The program is free and covers everything from ACT/SAT prep, tutoring, college visits, financial aid, college application, and many more topics. Meetings are held on Wednesdays from 6-8pm and include dinner. FREE Nursing Assistant Training for new Americans. The training is free and the only cost to the student will be a background check and the state certification exam ($20 and $100). Students also need to provide their own transportation (site is located on Como Ave in St. Paul it might be on/near the bus line) and a uniform. Job Corps is a no-cost education and career technical training program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor that helps young people, ages improve the quality of their lives through career technical and academic training. 5 The Office of College & Career Readiness and Step-Up will be making 100 PAID internships available for students during the Spring Semester. Students will have the opportunity to earn high school elective credits through the work-based learning course. Students who receive the internships will have an adjusted schedule and leave during the school day to work. Students must be on track to graduate! Interested students should speak with their counselor to see if they have room in their schedule for an early release schedule. (763) Page 5
