Departmental and Divisional Reviews: Lafayette College Physics Department, March, 1991 Bowdoin College Physics Department, May, 1996 Kenyon College Physics Department, February, 1998 Wellesley College, Physics Department, March, 1999 Fordham University, Physics Department, May, 1999 Randolph Macon Women s College, Physics Department, March, 2003 University of the South, Physics Department, October, 2003 Lawrence University, Physics Department, May, 2005 Drew University, Science Division, October, 2005 SELECTED RESEARCH ACCOMPLISHMENTS (publication list available upon request) Extended Appearance Potential Fine Structure [1978-'79] Contributed to the development of this technique for accurately determining spacings between nearby atoms in the surface regions of solids. (With collaborators at the University of Maryland) Lattice-Gas-Based Model for the Surface Phases of Oxygen Adsorbed on Ni(111) [1979-'80] Developed a lattice-gas model that accounted accurately for the surface phase diagram of the chemisorption system O/Ni(111) interestingly the system in which Davisson and Germer first observed diffraction of electrons using Monte Carlo simulation. (With collaborators at the University of Maryland) Measurement of critical exponents for a surface phase transition [1979-'84] Developed the analysis method of electron diffraction data that was used to determine the critical exponents of the disordering transition of the p(2x2) surface phase of O/Ni(111), a transition predicted to lie in the interesting 4-state Potts universality class. (With collaborators at the University of Maryland) Effect of Adsorption on Surface Reconstruction [1980-'85] Developed a mean field theory to account for the effect of adsorption of impurity atoms on the phase transition temperature of metallic surfaces that spontaneously reconstruct. (This work is mentioned in Andrew Zangwill's graduate level textbook, Physics at Surfaces.) (With collaborators at Brown University) Energetics of the Reconstruction of the Tungsten (001) Surface [1983-'89] Developed an accurate account of the energetics and the effects of surface steps on this long-studied surface reconstruction system. This work culminated with the use of first principle electronic structure total energy calculations to determine the force parameters that
4 Selected Research Accomplishments 4 govern the movement of the surface layer tungsten atoms. (With collaborators, at different stages of this project, from Brown University, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the College of William and Mary) Critical Behavior of Surface Phase Transitions in Various Universality Classes [1983-'87] Made theoretical predictions for the classification of various surface phase transitions using Monte Carlo simulation and assessed the obstacles for measuring critical exponents accurately via electron diffraction studies. (With collaborators at the University of Maryland) Models for Registered Overlayers in Metal on Metal Systems [1988-'89] Developed accurate models for the phase behavior in systems in which one metal forms a closed-packed (single) overlayer on another metal. The model included multi-atom interactions. (With collaborators at the University in Clausthal-Zellerfeld in Germany) Energetics and Kinetics of Missing Row Surface Reconstructions [1988-'95] Developed an accurate account of the missing row surface reconstruction that occurs on several noble metal (110) surfaces and investigated the kinetics of formation of these phases, which involve long-range movement of surface layer atoms. (With collaborators at Sandia National Laboratory) High-Order Commensurate Surface Reconstruction Phases [1991-'93] Developed an accurate account of the energetics of the surface reconstruction of the Mo(001) surface which has a periodicity extending over a distance of 7 lattice constants. (With collaborators at Sandia National Laboratory) Phase Diagrams for Alkali Adsorption Systems [1986-'87 & 1995-'97] Developed simulation techniques for determining phase diagrams of systems in which the adsorbed atom develops an appreciable electric dipole moment, resulting in long-range repulsive forces. Our model eventually accounted self-consistently for the tricky effect of depolarization. (With collaborators at the University in Clausthal-Zellerfeld in Germany, and with helpful interactions with a colleague at the Pennsylvania State University) Stability of Asperities on Metallic Surfaces [1996-'97] Made realistic calculations of the stability of fine pointed tips on a tungsten surface. This work has application to the tips used in scanning tunneling microscopy and in flat panel video displays. Kinetics of Metal-on-Metal Epitaxial Systems in Cases Involving Intermixing [1996-present] Developed simulation methods for time development of systems in which one metal is added to the surface of another when the added metal species is capable of penetrating the surface and displacing substrate atoms. Such systems display many interesting structural features. (With colloborators at the University of Ulm in Germany) SELECTED ACCOMPLISHMENTS in PEDAGOGY (publication list available upon request)
5 Selected Accomplishments in Pedagogy 5 Haverford College Physics Computer Projects [1982-'95] Developed a set of 6 substantial projects teaching computational approaches to physical systems for use in upper level physics courses. These projects were 'self-published' to minimize student cost and have been widely used at other institutions. Consortium for Upper-Level Physics Software [1990-'95] Participated as an author in the CUPS project which produced simulations and accompanying textbooks (published by Wiley) to be used in 9 upper-level physics courses. I co-authored the Electricity & Magnetism book and simulations. A Program for Preparing Physics Majors of Secondary-Level Teaching Careers [1995-'98] With my Haverford colleagues I developed a coherent program which prepares physics majors for teaching positions in high school science. The centerpiece of the program consists of two courses which involved the student in respectively laboratory and lecture instruction of our introductory physics course.
