2 Depression is a real and treatable illness and you have as much right to ask for help as anyone with an obvious physical injury. Also known as major depression, clinical depression or major depressive disorder is an illness that causes a constant feeling of sadness. Depression affects how a person feels, behaves and thinks. Depression can be a debilitating mood disorder that affects people both emotionally and physically. Those of us with depression find it hard to go about our day-to-day activities and may also feel that life is not worth living. 1.0 People can be affected by depression at any age. When you are depressed it is often difficult to think that anyone understands or cares. Feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness can be overwhelming. You may feel out of control of your emotions. It is important to remember that your feelings are real. You don t need an explanation for feeling the way you do. Depression is a real and treatable illness and you have as much right to ask for help as anyone with an obvious physical injury. Depression is very common. Around one in five people in Australia will have depression at some point in their lives. 1

3 SIGNS OF WHAT CAUSES? Understanding depression is important. It s completely normal to have days or weeks when things aren t going right and we feel unhappy and vulnerable. Feeling down in response to difficult situations is normal. Usually the worries fade and things return to normal. But when feelings of unhappiness are intense and persistent - and don t go away even when things improve - this could be depression. It s often a combination of things and it varies from person to person. We do know that some people are more likely to become depressed than others. Depression can also be triggered by a difficult situation in your life or it can build up over many years. Sometimes there s no clear reason. The most common signs of depression are constantly feeling down or hopeless and having little interest or pleasure in things that you used to enjoy. Other possible signs of depression include: > Irritability or restlessness > Feeling tired all the time or general loss of energy > Feelings of emptiness or loneliness > Lack of interest in favourite activities > Sleep problems (too much or too little) > Weight loss or gain > Low self-esteem > Problems with concentration > Reduced sex drive > Thinking about death a lot Being aware of the risk factors in your life will help you identify what might be causing your depression and help you find the right way through it. Family History > Family history of depression > Traumatic experiences in childhood Events > Death or loss of someone close > Relationship break-ups > Traumatic events > Financial pressure > Job loss > Serious accidents or long-term illness > Some medication (check with your doctor) > Stress or problems at work, school or university > Bullying or abuse > Some women experience depression during pregnancy or after childbirth Lifestyle > Excessive alcohol consumption > Recreational or party drugs > Social isolation > Lack of sleep > Poor diet and lack of exercise 2 3

4 Check the symptoms below - if you tick three or more it is possible you are experiencing depression. 2.0 AM I DEPRESSED? Losing weight, without dieting or alternatively gaining weight? 6. Finding it difficult to get to sleep, waking during the night, or waking too early and not being able to get back to sleep. Alternatively, wanting to sleep all the time? 7. Thinking about or planning suicide? 8. Having unpleasant, negative thoughts, (feeling guilty or that you are a bad or unworthy person)? 9. 5 3.0 SOUTH COAST PRIVATE S APPROACH TO MANAGEMENT CORE PRINCIPLES Managing and treating depression for long term wellbeing requires a personal and holistic approach. At South Coast Private we will listen to you and develop a treatment program that is tailored to your own personal history, experiences and needs. BENEFITS OF OUR TREATMENT PROGRAMS South Coast Private s depression management programs have been designed to help our patients to explore their issues around depression and gain an understanding of why they feel the way they do. COMMON PROGRAM ELEMENTS Learning programs at South Coast Private take place in a group therapy format. You will also receive education about personal development skills through lectures and workshops. South Coast Private will give you access to an experienced team of doctors, nurses and therapists, who will assess your progress through regular team reviews. We strongly encourage family involvement in your treatment to assist in your recovery. OUR TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR South Coast Private s Depression Management Program is an interactive psycho-educational and skills based group program. The program is designed to assist individuals to understand the nature of depression and factors that maintain it and develop skills and strategies to improve the participants depression and associated anxiety. At South Coast Private, we base our treatment on several core principles: > Offering patients a safe and supportive environment for managing and treating depression > Treatment under the expert supervision of medical professionals > Treat the whole person, taking into account their personal circumstances such as family, work, relationships, medical history and past issues > Treatment options to fit around the patient s everyday routines. South Coast Private offers extended inpatient over night stays and day programs Our programs will help you to learn the following life skills as you begin your road to recovery: > Gain skills in managing thoughts, recognising and correcting distortions in thinking and changing debilitating personal beliefs > Gain skills in managing increased anxiety or distress > Pactice mindfulness, including the selfawareness of thoughts, feelings and physical wellbeing > Improve relationships and communication skills Group Programs Why a group program? The value of the group process is that individuals discover that they are not alone with the problem of depression and they can become mutually supportive of each other as the group develops. Content and Format Although there are common features to the management of depression, each patient undergoes a comprehensive multidisciplinary assessment to determine the best strategy to address their illness. South Coast Private adopted evidenced based practice in the management of depression, which incorporates psychological treatments of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy; the adjunct of exercise physiology and dietary management to assist metabolic conditions and activity scheduling, and psychiatric care to address underlying vulnerability. The inpatient program is run over three weeks, and is then followed by an eight week day program, to assist patients in adopting the gains they have made in hospital, whilst in their home environment. 6 7
