Questions will be on material covered through assigned readings and class discussions or assignments and include content up to the class immediately prior to the exam date. B. ATI Practice Tests and Proctored Tests ATI (Assessment Technology Institute) is an experienced and innovative testing company serving schools of nursing nationwide. They specialize in nationally standardized entrance testing, practical and registered nursing comprehensives, and other nursing-related psychometric and review products. There professionally developed nursing exams assess the student s comprehension and provide nurse educators the opportunity to evaluate the student s knowledge in relation to the nursing process, critical thinking, and competency skills. Students are required to complete all the ATI tutorials, ATI practice tests, ATI final assessment test and remediation in order to receive credit for the course. 01/04/11/cm 4
5 ATI Practice Tests Students must complete two ungraded Leadership Practice Tests anytime in the semester but prior to the two scheduled Proctored Tests at the end of the semester. These practice tests must be passed with a score of 70% or above. Students may take the practice tests multiple times to achieve this score. Students must submit a printout of test completion to qualify to take the Proctored Tests. ATI Proctored Tests There are two proctored tests conducted with a live proctor at a designated test site, a Critical Thinking Proctored Test and a Leadership Proctored Test. Depending on the student s performance on the Leadership Proctored Test, the following ATI remediation is required: Level 3 requires 1 hour focused review remediation Level 2 requires 2 hours focused review remediation Level 1 requires 3 hours focused review remediation Below Level 1 requires 4 hours focused review remediation. ATI Remediation It is mandatory for all levels of competency on the Leadership Proctored Test to remediate within the designated time frame scheduled by the faculty. The student must complete the designated remediation time in order to receive points towards their grade. There is no remediation for the Critical Thinking Proctored Test. 4. Class Discussions Weekly discussions will proceed according to the schedule and is based upon the assigned reading and/or lecture. A thread will be created under the Discussions section on the course Laulima website. Students will post their comments and are expected to respond to at least one other classmate s posting for full points. Student comments should be substantive in that they explore the content and add significantly to the discussion by building on others comments, suggesting alternative solutions, pointing out problems and even at times constructively disagreeing. Just saying I agree is not enough to add to a discussion. Discussion responses should show evidence of having read analyzed and evaluated each other s response before posting. See Discussion Participation Rubric at the end of the syllabus for grading details. Weekly discussion topics will be open for 7 days, from Tuesday at 7 am to the following Tuesday at 7 am. Once the discussion is closed, students will not be allowed to enter any entries. Due to occasional irregularities of internet access, students are advised to enter their submissions in enough time prior to the deadline. Late submissions will not be accepted. 01/04/11/cm 5

Special Instructions Technical Requirements 1. This is an ONLINE course, therefore, students MUST have access to high-speed connectivity to the Internet (either cable modem, DSL). DO NOT use telephone dial-up as it is too slow. Internet access using a wireless air card via cell phone company may be adequate for certain types of work, but may not be adequate for all coursework needs. Please check your connectivity before proceeding with the course. 01/04/11/cm 6
7 2. Students should have access to a personal computer/ laptop (preferably, with Microsoft Office program.) 3. Those without personal computers or home Internet connection must familiarize themselves with the UH campus computer labs and plan ahead to use these facilities for computer assignments since open hours may be limited. NOTE: Students who have difficulty meeting these technical expectations should discuss their situations with the instructor as soon as possible as student success is dependent on adequate access to resources. Online Testing and Assignments: 1. DO take tests and submit assignments in enough time for any mishaps, so I can help you resolve problem BEFORE the deadline. 2. DO use a reliable internet connection, either with an ethernet cable or wireless off of an ethernet cable connection. 3. DON'T take tests or submit assignments near midnight, as the system does maintenance around then. 4. DON'T take tests or submit assignments using an iphone or mobile phone card. Using these devices will disqualify you from special consideration for make-up. These types of connections are unreliable for intensive real-time functions, like testing and large file submissions. You do so at your own risk. 5. DON'T compose long messages or reports online. Compose in your word processor, then copy and paste into the online section if needed. Saves disaster if you get bumped off in the middle of the composition. Technical Assistance: 1. If you have problems with the Laulima website, i.e. trouble with getting into a test or having a session being dropped, contact the technical assistant using information at the bottom of the Laulima page. Contact Laulima tech support immediately, from the computer you are using, so they can troubleshoot. Then, contact the instructor. 2. If you have problems with your computer or internet connection issues, contact the UH Hilo Help Desk at Use of Syllabus: This syllabus is to be construed as a contract with the student with regard to evaluation methods and grading scale. The class schedule may be subject to change. Academic Honesty: Students are strongly encouraged to familiarize themselves with the Student Code of Conduct for UH Hilo, which can be found at I expect you to behave with integrity and hold both yourself and your peers to the highest standards of ethical behavior. Academic dishonesty encompasses, but is not limited to: (1) plagiarism (i.e., copying another individual s words or ideas without 01/04/11/cm 7
8 appropriately citing the source); (2) turning in assignments that somebody else has completed; (3) referring to notes or other written/electronic materials, collaborating with others, copying someone else s work, or providing answers to others in any fashion during an examination. Please note that knowledge of others cheating and failure to report this to me can also be construed as complicitness in academic dishonesty. Should I have reason to suspect that academic dishonesty has occurred, I will conduct a thorough investigation or may refer the matter to the Dean of Students for investigation. Possible sanctions should you be found responsible for academic dishonesty could include a failing grade for the course, suspension or even expulsion from the University. Such consequences could negatively affect your candidacy for graduate/professional programs or for some jobs. Retention of Student Papers for Evaluation Purposes: Faculty reserve the right to retain copies of graded student work to be placed in student portfolios as a method of student and program evaluation. Attendance/ class participation: The instructor should be notified prior to any deadlines if a student cannot meet them due to unavoidable circumstances (i.e. illness) and wants an accommodation. Assistance to those with special learning needs: Any student with a documented disability who would like to request accommodations should contact the University Disability Services Office - Hale Kauanoe A Wing Lounge, (V), (TTY), shirachi@hawaii.edu - as early in the semester as possible.. Advising: Advising is a very important resource designed to help students complete the requirements of the University and their individual majors. Students should consult with their advisor at least once a semester to decide on courses, check progress towards graduation, and discuss career options and other educational opportunities provided by UH-Hilo. Advising is a shared responsibility, but students have final responsibility for meeting degree requirements. Counseling Services: Counseling services are available to students who need additional support while attending the baccalaureate nursing program. Nursing faculty are available for advising with an intentional focus on preparation of nurse generalists. You are encouraged to align your career focus and full attention to the requirements needed to succeed in all of your nursing courses. Please do not hesitate to share your concerns to faculty who will maintain confidentiality. Any other concerns not in keeping with the mission of the program will be referred to the counselors at Student Services. Writing Center Services: The UH Hilo Writing Center is located in the UH Hilo Mookini Library, 2 nd floor, in the PC Lab. Generally student writing tutors are available on a firstcome, first-serve basis. Plan accordingly for assistance well ahead of time prior to an assignment deadline if you expect to avail yourself of these services. Times and days of 01/04/11/cm 8
9 availability are available from the Center. DL students should contact the instructor for alternative resources at their resident sites.
