Candy Land of Sweets greeted a lively group of members, family and friends. The Wa Sung gang gathered at Aroma s for a delicious dinner prepared by Raymond Tang for our annual Christmas party. The elected 2009 officers/directors to the Board of Wa Sung met for the final 2008 board meeting at Full Moon Restaurant, where eating and sharing was the order of the evening. All in all I look forward to having a group of great leaders to point Wa Sung in the right direction with continued commitment to community service. This past week many East Bay newspapers carried a story of the Junk Boat named Free China from which Wa Sung s original Junk Boat got its idea. Free China is in need of some very special TLC by the end of the year. It would be a shame to see this piece of history destroyed. As each year draws to a close so a new beginning starts, I look forward to planning events for January 8 th, 2009 is the first General Meeting of the year I will not be able to attend. I ll be in Yosemite chaperoning the Lincoln 5 th Graders. Look for our report in a future newsletter. January 18 th, 2009, marks the first event of 2009, the Wa Sung Inaugural with the installation of the 2009 Board of Directors and Officers, to be held at the Silver Dragon Restaurant. 2 Marsha Golangco is an expert in Feng Shui or the art of creating harmonious environments. Born in Hong Kong, she grew up with the ancient Chinese philosophy of Feng Shui. She has been quoted frequently in newspapers and publications, ranging from Fortune to Real Estate Today. She is a consultant to major corporations such as A&R Property Management, Bank of America, Catellus Residential Group, Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate, Commonwealth Companies, Dunmore Homes, National Association of Bank, Loan and Credit Officers, Ponderosa Homes, Remax Realtors Group, and Standard Pacific Corporation. In addition to corporate clients, she also provides Feng Shui consultation to small business owners, individual professionals and homeowners. Marsha is an advocate of active community participation. Currently, she is a Human Relations Commissioner of Contra Costa County, serving on the board of several non-profit organizations, including the Asian Pacific Cultural Center and the Asian Business Association. Marsha received her B.A. in Biology from Santa Clara University, M.A. in Home Economics from San Francisco State University, and completed the Academic Program of a Ph.D. in Environmental Science from the University of the Philippines.

4 Santa Visiting Chinatown Kids By Wayne Fong On Thursday December 18th, Wa Sung Santas and their elves came to visit the children of Oakland, giving away toys and sweets to close to 700 children at Lincoln and Cleveland Elementary schools, Yuk Yau, Yuk Yau Annex and Methodist Church Preschools. At 9 AM in the morning Santa Richard Fong and his elves Adrienne Fong, Barbara & Ron Hing, Cimberly Eng- Tamara, Wilma Yee, Kathy Jeong, Karen Dea, Sandra Wong, Nora Yee, Nancy Tsui, Clifton & Marion Fong, Cyndee Lim, Rebecca Wong and Cheryl Yukumoto visited with the children of Lincoln Elementary School and were greeted with Christmas Carols and smiles. TV 26 had a camera crew and we made the News!!! They interviewed Santa Richard with and without his beard on and showed his elves giving out the stuffed animals, Speedwheel cars, oranges, candy canes and pencils engraved with the Wa Sung name on them. After the Lincoln School visit, Santa Wayne Fong took elves Clifton and Marion Fong, Karen Dea, Kathy Jeong, Wilma Yee and Cheryl Yukumoto to spread Christmas joy to the little preschoolers at the Yak Yau Annex. Richard and the rest of the elves continued on their quest to bring smiles to the children at Yak Yau and Methodist Church preschoolers. All in a good morning's work, we brought the Christmas spirit to 500 kids. We all took a break at Joy Luck restaurant to give us enough energy for the afternoon. Yes, the rumors are true: Santa Wayne did wear his Santa pants and boots at lunch. And yes, even in Chinatown people do stare at you for wearing funny pants. To round out our day we finished up at Cleveland Elementary school with toys and things for another 200 children. We would like to thank Doris Lum for her donation of 100 Beanie Baby's for our Santa toy giveaway, and also Pacific Rim Produce for their donation of 6 cases of Oranges. Thanks to all of our Santas and elves for another job well done. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

6 Santa Claus Comes to Allendale School By Gloria Gee As a new member of the Wa Sung Community Service Club, I was impressed with the "giving spirit" and enthusiastic participation of its members. On Thursday, December 18, 2008, Santa Claus and his Elves delivered 400 wrapped gifts and pencils to the pre-school, kindergarten and grades 1-3 children at Allendale School in Oakland's Fruitvale district. The Children were delighted with their gifts as well as sitting on Santa's lap (alias Arnold Mew). Arnold was the perfect image of Santa with his smiling face, rosy cheeks, wire rimmed glasses and his twinkling eyes. Of course his Santa outfit fitted him perfectly! Santa's elves were Rena Chin, Diane Ross, and Gloria Gee. Pictures were taken by Rena Chin and Genie Young. Much preparation and thanks go to the family of Garrienne Nakano and Genie Young with the extra help of Diane Ross who donated much of the Christmas wrap to Wa Sung. This group wrapped all the gifts. Since there were some gifts left over, Santa delivered them to Past President Audrey Huie to be distributed to the children of Episcopal Church of our Savior. Hope to see more members come and volunteer next year.

7 Membership Update By Florence Lau This is another great year for Wa Sung. Please welcome the 13 new members joining us this year! They are Jean Quan, Bill Leong, Alex Yong Liu, Annis M Shousen, 1/8/09 General Meeting, The Englander, Michael Chae, Raymond Chui, Deborah Stevenson, San Leandro. Guest speaker: Alfred Chan, Simon Lui, Suky Xie, Ben Yee, Frank Marsha Golango on Feng Shui Chiang, and Gloria Gee. They all have been at our General Meetings in 2008 and have joined many of our 1/18/09 Inaugural, Silver Dragon Restaurant club events like the Easter Pancake Breakfast, Merit Oakland Chinatown Scholarship and A Toast to Tapas. With their involvement in these events, we can see the growth of these new club members from helping the community and through the 1/26/08 Chinese New Year of the Ox sharing of their time and efforts.
