Arcado Elementary School Bring Your Own Device Training for Students and Parents

What is BYOD? Access to the Internet at school. BYOD gives the same set of permissions as if you are on a school computer. Internet usage is still monitored, as it is on a regular school computer. Bringing a device is voluntary not required

Access We will start with 4 th and 5 th grade students bringing in their own device Students will log into the GCPS network at school Students agree to use the same code of conduct as they do when logged on to a GCPS owned device

Responsible Use GCPS will filter all content for students connected to the GCPS network at school. Accessing inappropriate materials while at school is will result in disciplinary action, including confiscation of the device and notifying parents.

Theft, Loss or Damage The student is responsible for making sure that the device is safe and secure. GCPS is not responsible for any maintenance, damage, theft, usage charges, or loss of this non-school-district equipment.

Texting Fees GCPS is not responsible for any fees for using any personal technology devices. A student should not use other functions or features on his or her device, which may result in standard fees billed by the student s provider. Turn on Airplane Mode.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I log in to the BYOD network? Use the same login you use for a school computer. Once you are authenticated, you will receive filtered access to the Internet (just as if you are on a GCPS device).

While on your wireless device, go to your WiFi connections and choose the Student connection..

The GCPS Login Screen should automatically pullup. If it doesn t pull up after a few seconds, try going to your web browser (Chrome, Safari, etc ). Log in using the same Username and Password you use to log in to the computer. Click CONNECT.

You may see the following window pop-up. Try going to your web browser (Chrome, Safari, etc ) to see if you are connected.

Do I Need to Register My Device? YES When you fill out the BYOD Release Form, you will provide the serial number of your device.

What kind of device ereader may I bring? Smartphone (and ipod Touch) with Camera 7 or Larger Touchscreen Tablet (ios, Android, or Win8), No Camera or with Front and Back Camera Laptop Look at the Bring It Flyer for more information

Can I access Facebook/Twitter/ Instagram/YouTube etc.? NO Connecting to the wireless network is just like connecting to the GCPS network when it comes to sites you can access. Even though you are using your own personal device, you must follow the GCPS guidelines and the Responsible Use Policy.

Can I use my phone to play games and text my friends during class? NO Personally owned devices should be used for educational purposes only.

Can I print from my device to school printers? NO If you need to print, you must put the document in your dropbox on your eclass course page. Then log into a GCPS laptop and print from your eclass course page.

Can I save my work to the school network? NO The student s H drive is NOT available through the GCPS Wi-Fi network for personally owned devices. Use your device s storage options.

Will I be able to charge my device at school? NO There are a limited number of outlets available in any given classroom. Students should make it a point to charge their device prior to coming to school each day.

Is it allowed to use the data plan from an outside provider on my device? NO The GCPS network is the ONLY allowable network on personal devices at school. Students should not access the Internet through any cellular data provider while on school premises.

Can I share my login with my friends? NO The same rules apply for a school computer (i.e. you cannot share your username and password with anyone). If you share your login with anyone, then your account may be disabled.

What if I forget my device at home? May I call home? NO Students will not be allowed to call home to have their device brought to school. The office will not accept/deliver devices to students who have forgotten their device.

What do I do if my device is damaged or stolen? Even though you are TOTALLY responsible for keeping your personal device safe and secure, any time there is theft or damage, you should notify your teacher. GCPS and Arcado Elementary School is not liable or responsible for any theft, damage, or loss of any personal device.

What if I can t get my device working on BYOD? You should know how to use your own device. See BYOD Basic Skills. GCPS employees are not permitted to touch student devices. Refer to your owner s manual or internet to help you troubleshoot.

So what CAN I use my device for? With BYOD, Technology is a tool, not a learning outcome or a source of entertainment.

So what CAN I use my device for? Reading an e-book or Leveled Reader Access your C&I course page Use Online Resources for research Use website for projects such as Padlet, Tagxedo, Animoto, Thinglink Go to Learning Links on your Course Page

When Can I Use My Device? Your teacher will let you know when to bring in your device. Your teacher will let you know when to take out your device during the school day. Devices can only be used for educational purposes. Devices may not be used at recess, lunch or on the bus.

Some Helpful Tips Charge your device before coming to school. Keep your phone in airplane mode when you are not using it to preserve your battery life. Put your device in your backpack when you are not using it. Classroom doors will remain locked when teachers are not in the room.
