1 Limited User Rights Workaround Revision 2 Problem: When you try to start the software on a Windows 2000/XP PC using an account that does not have Administrator Privileges you get an Unknown error message. This problem only occurs on hard drives that have been formatted as NTFS. It appears to have something to do with the extra security that this file system has. Solution: The Problem can be solved by allowing the user to have Modify and Write permissions for the Janome installation folder. Some of the hints are available on the following Microsoft site: 'Simplified file sharing' is on by default if the Win XP-based pc is not a member of a domain according to KB article: < Proposed Workaround: Proposed workaround solutions cover both topologies: Domain Standalone Known Limitations: Windows XP: The Failed to update system registry, please try using regedit error message does not get removed by using this workaround. User should press OK to close the dialog. The workaround will remove the access violation and the user will be able to start the software, but as stated above the regedit message will still appear. 2 For Domain Computers: On the Domain controller use the following steps: Important Note: The Installation location must be the same on all the computers in the domain for this method to work correctly 1. Open the Domain Security Policy Editor (Control Panel->Administrative Tools-> Domain Security Policy) 2. Expand the security Settings if Required 3. Right click the File System node and select Add File 4. Type the path of the installation of Janome D10K, on the computers in the domain (i.e. C:\Digitizer 10000), in the dialog that appears then click OK Support Note Page 2 of 7

4 6. Select Domain Users (Or the appropriate user group) from the list and Click Add. Then Click OK 7. Select the Modify And Write Options for the newly added group and click OK 8. Click OK on the dialog that appears accepting the default settings Support Note Page 4 of 7

5 The Policy will appear in the Domain Security Policy dialog as %Systemdrive%\<Path Entered>. It takes a little while (should not be longer than 10 minutes) for the new policy to take affect. After these steps have been followed and the policy has taken affect the computers connected to the domain will need to be restarted. I. For Workgroups or Standalone computers: This can also be done for domain computers but would be quite time consuming if there is a large number of computers Note: These steps must be carried out using an account that has administrator privileges. 1. Open Windows Explorer 2. Select Tools->Folder Options 3. Select the View Tab 4. Scroll to the bottom of the advanced settings list 5. Uncheck the Use simple file sharing (Recommended) option and Click OK Support Note Page 5 of 7

6 6. Navigate to the Digitizer Installation Folder (C:\ Digitizer by default) 7. Right click the folder and Select Properties 8. Select the Security tab 9. Select the Users entry from the Groups and user names list 10. Enable the Modify and Write options for this user group and click ok Support Note Page 6 of 7
