8 2 History and Overview Gwinnett Technical College (GTC) was established in 1984 under the name Gwinnett Area Technical School. Originally intended to be an area magnet school with an emphasis on health and business education programs, local industry leaders identified the critical need for adding additional programs that would prepare students for the emerging high-tech workplace. In 1988, the institution's name was changed to Gwinnett Technical Institute, aligning Gwinnett Tech with the network of state technical institutes under the Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education (DTAE). The following year, DTAE approved Gwinnett Tech to grant the associate degree in applied technology (AAT) in six programming areas, which paved the way for Gwinnett Tech to pursue accreditation with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. Gwinnett Tech gained accreditation in record time for a state technical institute, making it one of the few technical schools with this accreditation. Gwinnett Tech reached another benchmark in its history on July 6, 2000, when it changed its name to Gwinnett Technical College to better reflect its position within the region's higher education market. The name change was made possible by Georgia's A+ Education Reform Act of 2000, which allowed technical institutes with proper accreditation to be designated as colleges. By 2005, Gwinnett Technical College officially completed governance change from Gwinnett County to the Georgia DTAE which subsequently changed its name officially through legislation in 2008 to the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG). Gwinnett Tech is one of 25 institutions in the TCSG. In July of 2010, the northern portion of Fulton County was added to Gwinnett County as Gwinnett Tech's total service delivery area. During its 25-year history, Gwinnett Technical College has expanded its campus to include a variety of new facilities bringing the total to nine buildings on the 85.5 acre campus in Lawrenceville, GA. Significant recent additions include: D. Scott Hudgens, Jr. Early Education Center (2006) - a 26,500 square-foot interactive classroom and observation site for students enrolled in the college's Early Childhood Care and Education program and provides the community with early childhood care and pre-school instruction, including Georgia Pre-K classes; equipped with the latest in communication and observation systems, serves 215 children, ages six weeks to 12 years International Education Center (2008) - located at Gwinnett Place Mall, hosts a number of continuing education classes, including language offerings and workforce training, that support area businesses and meet the needs of Gwinnett's multilingual population Life Sciences Center (2011) - state-of-the-art Center provides 78,000 square feet of innovative learning space dedicated to life sciences, healthcare professions, and public safety/service programs, enabling GTC to both expand enrollment and add additional programs in healthcare and life sciences Today, Gwinnett Tech offers nearly 150 associate (AAS) degrees, diplomas and certificates in 45 program areas and hundreds of continuing education seminars and workshops to improve job skills and provide specialized training. Since the beginning of the new millennium, the college has experienced enviable growth, increasing enrollment 55 percent over the last six years. Gwinnett Tech is now one of the state s largest technical colleges and last year served over 22,000 students through the college s credit programs, continuing education workshops and courses, and the adult education program. GTC continues to partner with business and industry to ensure that it remains a state-of-the-art educational and training facility for Gwinnett County, North Fulton, and the surrounding region.

For HOPE recipients, this fee can only be paid by HOPE Book funds if a signed student authorization is on file in the Business Office. Course fees are assessed according to the number of credit hours, up to a maximum of 15, a student registers for each quarter.
