4 PLANNING A PROGRAM OF STUDY A student s program of study is most important and the selection of courses should be made only after careful planning and deliberation. Each student is encouraged to arrange a conference with his guidance counselor each year in order to evaluate himself or herself on the basis of his or her abilities, interests, academic achievement, and post-secondary school plans. With the help of counselors, teachers, and parents, students should choose a high school program consistent with the goals and objectives they have established. Each student should plan to develop his or her full potential to prepare for as many alternative career choices as possible so that should goals change because of personal preference or circumstances, flexibility of choice will exist. COURSE REGISTRATION PROCEDURES 1. Information concerning course selection for the following year is given in the spring by each grade counselor in small group settings. 2. Specific questions or special problems should be directed to the counselor on an individual basis. 3. Classroom teachers work with students to provide information about courses in their subject area, and initial course selection cards to make recommendations for the next school year. 4. Students complete course selection forms requesting the courses they wish to schedule. Parental signature of approval is required. 5. The forms completed during this preliminary registration are processed to provide lists of every student requesting a particular course. These lists enable the school to determine which course should be scheduled to best meet the students needs while providing optimum use of staff and facilities. The lists are checked to ensure, in so far as possible, that each student has requested appropriate courses and levels. 6. The student s course requests are processed by computer to provide the individual student s schedule. If all of the students requests cannot be honored (usually due to course conflicts in times or insufficient requests to offer a course) a staff member will work with the student to make the best alternative selection. THE FOLLOWING REGULATIONS GOVERN ANNUAL COURSE SELECTION: (1) Students must elect the number of courses necessary to meet the yearly minimum requirement. Grade nine 7.0 credits Grade ten 7.0 credits Grade eleven 7.0 credits Grade twelve 6.0 credits (can be adjusted per administrative approval) 4

5 (2) The tentative course selection timeline for school year is as follows: January 23 rd 7:00pm at the Middle School Cafeteria Evening program for eighth grade parent orientation to the course selection process. By late February course tallies will be available for staffing recommendations February through May 2013 Counselors meet with students individually to review teacher and parent recommendations. July 22, 2013 Student preliminary/tentative schedules are distributed for the school year. Deadlines for schedule changes: August 7, 2013 Last day for student initiated schedule changes. Summer changes do not include teacher or lunch reassignments. Mid-marking period dates for fall or spring.5 semester classes (see school calendar) October 25, 2013 (for full credit classes) Once the school year begins, acceptable schedule changes include teacher initiated academic misplacement changes and parent initiated/approved electives withdrawals for a study hall (students may only be dropped from course and placed in a study hall, not changed to another course). No schedule changes will be made after the first marking period in a full year course except for special circumstances or approval by the Principal. (3) All summer course changes need to be requested by Wednesday, August 7th. Once the school year begins, any schedule change will be recorded on the student s transcript (for example, if a student withdraws from a course with a passing grade, the student will receive a WP; if the student withdraws from a course with a failing grade, the student will receive a WF). * The transcript will reflect all schedule changes once the school year begins per the grade policy listed above. (4) Credit is awarded once yearly in June and is given only for completed courses. If a student drops course he/she shall receive a WP/WF indicating withdrawal. Scheduled courses may not be discontinued without student, teacher, parental, guidance and administrative approval for sufficient reason. Alternate selections to meet annual credit requirements must be determined at the time of withdrawal. Students may be dropped from a course for disciplinary reasons and in that instance, do not have to maintain the minimum credit requirement. (5) A unit of credit is defined as a course planned on the basis of at least 120 clock hours. (6) To earn status as a sophomore, a student must accumulate 6 credits. (7) To earn status as a junior, a student must accumulate 12 credits. (8) To earn status as a senior, a student must accumulate 18 credits. (9) Students who have not completed the necessary requirements for graduation may not participate in commencement exercises. 5

8 COMPETENCY TESTS The Keystone Exams are end-of-course assessments designed to assess proficiency in various subjects. During the school year the following Keystone Exams will be given: Algebra I, Literature and Biology. Beginning with the class of 2017, students must demonstrate proficiency on all Keystone exams as a graduation requirement. Remediation classes will be mandatory for non-proficient students. Information obtained from state/local assessments will be valuable for (1) planning future school programs, curriculum development and in-service training and (2) informing the public about student achievement. These assessments will provide individual student reports as well as school, district and state data. WEIGHTING OF COURSES Courses offered in the Lower Dauphin High School curriculum vary considerably in their degree of difficulty. This range of course difficulty results from a program that is geared to provide for a broad range of student differences in abilities, interests, vocational, and academic pursuits. For this reason, grade points vary in accordance with the levels of difficulty of the course. This weighting factor is necessary to assure that an element of fairness exists in determining the class rank of students. All courses ranked as Weight 1 shall be recorded as the actual grade average. Courses ranked as Weight 2 shall receive an additional 2.5 percentage points to the grade average. Courses ranked as Weight 3 shall receive an additional 5 percentage points, to the grade average. Courses ranked as Weight 4 shall receive an additional 10 percentage points. Courses ranked as Weight 5 shall receive an additional 12 percentage points. The weight for each course is indicated on the course tracking sequence for each department. In computing the weighted grade point average, only academic courses (Weight 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5) shall be considered. Excluded from the computation are most classes from Art, Driver Education, Health and Physical Education, Family and Consumer Sciences, Technology Education, Music, Reading and Independent Studies. GRADE POINT AVERAGE In computing the non-weighted grade point average, all courses are considered. To compute the non-weighted GPA, the percentages earned are converted to a 4.0 scale, added together and then divided by the total number of credits. See chart below: Letter Grade Percent Quality Points 1.0 credit Quality Points 0.5 credit Quality Points 0.25 credit A A A B B B C C C D D D F 59 & below

9 CLASS RANK Class rank is determined by arranging all students in order of their weighted grade point average. This average is based upon the total percentage points earned divided by the credits for academic courses taken. The computation will take place each marking period. Students that repeat courses, due to previous low grades or other reasons, shall have both grades computed in their class rank, but only one credit is awarded. In 9th grade, there is a great deal of movement in the first marking period. For that reason, 9th graders will not receive a class rank on their report card until the end of the second marking period. LEVELS OF COURSES LDHS uses course levels to guide students in selecting a satisfactory academic program according to their interests, needs and abilities. College Prep (CP), Honors (H) and Advanced Placement (AP) courses are designed for students whose goal is to attend a four year college upon graduation. Emphasis is placed on academic rigor. Any student who elects to take the AP exam for the AP course in which s/he is enrolled shall be exempted from course s final exam if the student s cumulative grade point average for the course is an 80% or better at the end of the fourth marking period. For students to be eligible to take Honors courses in any academic area they must achieve at least a 93% average in their respective college prep courses. To remain in the Honors program a student must maintain at least an 80% average in the Honors course for that department. Students moving from a middle school program must achieve a 93% (A-) in order to gain admittance in the Honors program for each respective department. Middle school students already enrolled in an honors level course, must maintain an 80% to continue in the honors level in the high school. The Tech Prep (TP) level is designed for students considering two year colleges, trade/technical programs and possibly four year colleges. These courses combine academic and applied learning situations. The Career Prep (CRP) and General (G) levels at designed grade levels are for students whose goal is to enter the world of work immediately following graduation. The emphasis is placed on employability and life skills. DRIVERS EDUCATION Tenth grade students will have an opportunity to sign up for an on-line Drivers Education course through Shield Driving School. LDHS will pay the $50 registration fee for those students who register in advance. It is an optional course (not required for graduation) and individual students will have the opportunity to complete this course at home; it will not be scheduled during the school day. Information about the on-line course along with behind-the-wheel driver training can be found at or by calling Shield Driving School at
