1 INTEGRATING VERIFICATION INTO MARKETO Step by Step using Webhooks

2 INTRODUCTION: How can you ensure that your marketing initiatives are successful? The benefit of cloud-based verification is that StrikeIron constantly evolves its algorithms in the background without requiring customers to update their Marketo integration. The integrated solution verifies addresses in real-time within or as they enter the Marketo system, recording the results in custom fields in the Marketo solution. As leads enter into the Marketo system via a Web-to-lead form, the address can be instantaneously verified to filter out invalid, bad addresses. This document provides a few easy steps to setup the integration of StrikeIron s Verification API and a Marketo Webhook, sending you on your way to an easy-to-use verification solution within Marketo. There are five steps to getting this to work. First, the Webhook must be configured to communicate with StrikeIron s Verification API. Second, the output data from StrikeIron s Verification API must be mapped to the Marketo fields, which will store the results of the verification. Third, a form, such as a Web-to-lead style set of fields, must be created as the prospect data collection point that fires a Trigger Campaign. Fourth, this Trigger Campaign must be created and attached to the triggering business process, such as clicking on the Submit button of a created Web-to-lead form. To complete the integration, a test landing page needs to be created to check the new functionality. In addition, you must have credentials from StrikeIron (a UserID and Password) to get the SMS message successfully delivered to the target mobile device. These can be obtained via subscription from StrikeIron at Trials are available. Step 1: Configure the Webhook The Marketo Web application communicates with StrikeIron using a Webhook, which in turn utilizes the REST HTTP protocol to communicate with StrikeIron s SMS API. REST, or Representational State Transfer, is a Web-based architecture for enabling different hardware and software platforms to communicate via a common text-based XML format. Here is an example of a REST call that performs an verification using StrikeIron s API: l?licenseinfo.registereduser.userid=userid&licenseinfo.registereduser.passwor

3 By simply entering the text into the address URL of any browser (e.g. FireFox, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer), you can test the above REST call. Be sure to supply your UserID and Password credentials obtained from StrikeIron. Note the Timeout parameter in the REST call. This is the number of seconds allowed for various tests to run before result is returned. Since these checks are performed out on the Internet, server response times can vary, making a timeout mechanism necessary. It is the various components of the above REST call that we will insert into the Marketo Webhook, because XML-based calls are supported by the Marketo platform. Note the question mark (?) in the middle of the actual REST call. This question mark separates the endpoint of the API (the URL where the API lives on the Internet, i.e. StrikeIron servers) from the parameters that are supplied along with the REST call. Once logged into your Marketo instance, go to Admin. Within Admin, you will see the ability to Manage Webhooks. Click on New Webhook. You will then see the following form: First, give the Webhook a name. When configuring the Webhook, both the REST endpoint and the parameter components of the REST call must be used. The URL field will contain the endpoint as described above. The actual parameters for the REST call need to be put into the Template field. This is where you can pull in the address from the appropriate Marketo fields that will be used for the purposes of the address verification. To get a list of field variables to include as part of the Template field, click on Insert Token next to Template. The Request Token Encoding field needs to be changed to Form/URL and the Response Type field needs to be changed to XML.

4 In the example above, the notation {{lead. Address}} indicates to send the address of the Marketo-captured lead to the StrikeIron verification system via the Internet. This is the notation used to integrate actual lead data into the Webhook. This field will be populated by the lead data for the record that triggers the invocation of the Webhook. The Webhook is now ready to be consumed by the Marketo system.. Step 2: Map the Output Data The next step is to edit the Response Mappings in the same Webhook. While configuring the Webhook, simply click on Edit to map these values. Typically, you will create custom fields within Marketo to store the resultant output received from a call out to the StrikeIron API, but this is not a requirement. WebServiceResponse.Verify Response.Verify Result.ServiceStatus.StatusNbr -> MyCustomField1 WebServiceResponse.Verify Response.Verify Result.ServiceStatus.StatusDescription -> MyCustomField2 In the above Webhook example StrikeIron Response and StrikeIron Code were created as custom fields to store output data. The Marketo system uses the API Name of a custom field when mapping data from a Webhook call. You are asked for this when creating the custom field, since it is used to store data in the Marketo database and it can be accessed later through Marketo s own APIs.

5 Step 3: Create the Form This is a standard activity within Marketo. More information can be found within the Marketo Help documentation. In Design Studio, click on New and create a New Form : When the form is created, click on Edit Form. Then, click on Template Form Fields on the right. Drag desired fields onto the canvas to create a Web-to-lead form like this one (the Submit and Clear buttons will be added automatically as soon as you start dragging fields to the form): Step 4: Setup the Trigger Campaign This is also a standard activity within Marketo. More information can be found within the Marketo Help documentation about creating Trigger Campaigns. Click on New and New Smart Campaign under Marketing Activities. Give the campaign a name and decide which folder to store it in:

6 Next, click the Smart List tab. Drag the Fills out Form Trigger from the right to the white canvas then choose Form Name Test created earlier. Next, Click on Flow. Drag Call Webhook onto the white canvas and choose the Test_ Webhook created in Step 1. Next, click on Schedule and Activate the Campaign. The Campaign is now ready. Step 5: Create a Landing Page to Test the Webhook This is a standard activity within Marketo. More information can be found within the Marketo Help documentation. Click on New and then New Landing Page :

7 Once the page is created click Edit Draft. Using the Landing Page Designer, which is under Design Elements, drag the Form object onto the white canvas. Then choose the Test Form created in step 3. For the purposes of testing, go ahead and select Stay on this Page for the Followup Page option then click the Insert Button. Go back to the Landing Page Designer and Approve the page. Next, click the View Approved Page button. That s it! You are now ready to test.

8 As a test, fill out the lead form. When you click Submit, the lead will be entered into the Marketo Leads Database and the Trigger Campaign will fire, performing the verification as configured in the Webhook. The StrikeIron Verification API will be called to check the validity of the address: If you then go back to My Marketo and view the Leads Database, you will be able to see this lead with the custom fields populated with data returned from the StrikeIron API. Congratulations! You have successfully integrated StrikeIron s Verification API into Marketo. You now have the ability to create marketing campaigns with maximum deliverability within the Marketo platform!
