1 Page 1 of 10 8 th Grade Digital Literacy & Computer Keyboarding Lakewood Middle School Syllabus Goals Basic Rules LEARNING GOALS (1) (1) Memorize the basic computer keyboard using proper keyboarding technique and touch-typing methodology that leads to keyboard mastery. This will prepare students for more advanced computer application courses. 1. The students will learn and demonstrate proper keyboarding techniques. 2. The students will master the keyboard using touch-typing skills. 3. The students will develop letters and reports with correct formatting. (2) Learn to use critical thinking skills to make good decisions concerning digital life. (3-Part) Part 1: Internet Safety & Security Learning Goals a. Learn to think critically about information shared online. Learn to manage personal information, create strong passwords & examine website privacy policies to understand how to keep information safe & secure. b. Explore the benefits & risks of online talk & the patterns of online predators and apply strategies for safe online communication. Part 2: Digital Citizenship Learning Goals a. Explore the role of digital media in student s lives, their communities, and culture, and learn how good digital citizens harness these tools responsibly. b. Learn that the Internet is a public space, and then develop skills to protect privacy and respect the privacy of others. c. Explore the ethics of online relationship, both the negative behaviors to avoid, such as cyber-bullying & hate speech, & the positive behaviors that support collaboration & community. d. Explore their online versus their offline identity. Learn how they present themselves online can affect their relationships, sense of self, and reputation. e. Learn about their rights and responsibilities as 21 st century creative artists, ant he ethics of using creative work from others. Explore topics ranging from copyright to fair use. Part 3: Digital Research & Information Literacy Learning Goals a. Learn that different genres of search sites have different attributes & capabilities. Develop strategies to increase the accuracy of keyword searches. b. Learn they must navigate websites with a critical eye for quality and stickiness. Equipped with evaluation strategies, students will learn how to correctly cite online sources. In this class we use an online assignment page since, in the future; many students will do coursework online, submit work online, or be responsible for successfully using online/web-based assignment/course pages as a component of a class. Required course work and activities are recorded online and past assignments are also archived for student and parent reference. The page is called Keeper of the Keys. 2 Page 2 of 10 Digital Literacy & Keyboarding Classroom Norms for All students must be seated by 2 nd bell or tardy will be recorded a. Student materials, except a pencil, must be stored directly below the student chair, (no other materials can be on the workstation desktop as there is no space) 2. Log-on Procedure must begin a. Student experiencing log-on problems must appropriately contact the instructor 3. Proceed to Online Assignment Page a. Complete pre-class activities as directed via the online page 4. Welcome & Opening of Class Review Daily Learning Goals 5. Participation in Teacher-Directed Activities & Instruction 6. Participation in Cooperative Learning Time 7. Participation in Independent (student-directed) Learning Time 8. Closing Activities & Learning Logs/Portfolio Maintenance 9. Log-off procedure, Box & Workstation Checks a. Sign up time for Opportunity Time, Advisory Time, or after-school passes 10. Dismissal by Rows (Teacher dismisses, not the bell)

3 Page 3 of 10 BASIC CLASSROOM RULES Students must have up-to-date Internet permissions Be seated, with all materials*, ready to work when the bell rings. 2. Follow Directions Immediately 3. Work during Work Time Listen Always 4. Keep hands, feet, & objects to yourself- Practice Acceptable Behavior * Materials include: Agenda, Pencils, Digital Literacy Portfolio 3 BASIC GUIDELINES FOR SUCCESS Becoming persons of Integrity, Character and Be Respectful to others, to leadership, to equipment & most of all, to yourself (Respect: be honest, admirable, fair, polite, decent, worthy, appreciative, kind) Be Responsible Be on time, try your best, get the work done (every skill level is different) Bring your agenda to class EVERYDAY No exceptions! Do the required work. Know your password. No password = lost work time. Seats are assigned; be ready to work by be 2 nd bell. No food or drink. Three hall passes per quarter are issued. (does not apply to medical concerns) Other rules related to daily routines will apply. Be Safe Our classroom environment assures students are physically & emotionally safe.

4 Page 4 of 10 Digital Literacy & Keyboarding Classroom Guidelines for Students will bring their Agenda, Digital Literacy portfolio, a pencil, and any other assigned materials to class each day. 2. Students will create a password for the District System and be provided three other passwords. Their passwords must be kept private. Students are not allowed to use other student's digital folders or passwords. Remember, students are responsible for anything that is put into their digital folders. 3. Students are expected to remain seated at their stations unless given permission to do otherwise. 4. Students are not allowed to change any settings on the computer and are not allowed to browse or search through digital folders without permission. 5. Students are to treat the computer and all classroom equipment with care. 6. Students are not allowed to bring drinks or food items into the lab. 7. Students are not allowed to print material without permission. 8. Students need to have an up-to-date Internet license. 9. Students will be allowed to use hall passes three times during each quarter. If there is a medical concern, please let the teacher know. Students are asked to sign out and sign in when leaving or returning to the classroom.

5 Page 5 of 10 8 th Grade Academic Team Rules All 8 th Grade Computer Keyboarding & Digital Literacy students are assigned to one of three 8 th Grade Teams. We have students from all three 8 th Grade Academic Team and honor all Team Rules GRADING is based on Class Performance by Defined Rubric Keyboarding Technique Defined by Rubric posture, hands covered, correct fingering, memorized home row Completion of Lessons Defined by Rubric Completion of In-Class Activities Defined by Rubric Completion of In-Class Projects Standard Grading Scale 2 nd Nine Weeks Grading will include Skill Level Grading Weighted Grading is Used: Daily Work 40% Performance/Activities Graded by Rubric 25% Testing 20% Quizzes & Formative Testing 25% Late Work accepted as per School Policy which reads as follows: Lakewood Middle School s late work policy requires that any assignment turned in late will receive a 10% grade reduction penalty. All work assigned at the start of a quarter, but before mid-term, must be turned in by midterm. All work assigned after mid-term must be turned in before the end of the quarter in order to receive credit. Keyboarding Work may often be corrected and resubmitted. 8 Page 8 of 10 Digital Literacy & Keyboarding Discipline Interventions for Classroom Disruptions, Off-Task and/or Inappropriate and Disrespectful Behaviors will result in the steps below: TIER 1 TIER 2 TIER 3 - Intervention (3 to 5 Occasions in all classes combined) a. May include but not limited to: visual contact, proximity, behavior card, behavior chart, teacher conference, Think Sheet, etc. - Consequence for Continued Inappropriate Behavior a. Mandatory Call Home to Parent/Guardian b. May include but not limited to: Time Out, Counselor, Call Home, Individual Consultation, Parent Meeting, Detention, Think Sheet, Team Intervention, detention, etc. - Parent Meeting with Counselors, Administration, & Team to develop a behavior plan a. Office Referral may be written; Call Home made Frequent or reoccurring discipline issues will result in Parent-Teacher contact and/or conference. Concern of possible Academic Dishonesty will result in Parent-Teacher contact and/or conference Immediate Referrals may be given for the following behaviors: a. Violence, fighting, hitting b. Profanity c. Bullying d. Weapons e. Drugs f. Threats g. Vandalism h. Stealing in the classroom Please continue reading pages 8 & 9

Restroom tickets allow them to use RR during class. These are not locker passes. Students should use passing period wisely. Unused RR tickets can be submitted for Extra Credit at Quarter.
