To save money and Wprotect water quality, avoid over-applying fertilizer and pesticides on your lawn or garden. Also, watch your local weather forecast before application, and avoid applying if rain is in the two-day forecast. Rain will wash your chemicals right into the local watershed, wasting your time and materials and jeopardizing local water quality. For more information, contact the Missouri Department of Natural Resources at or visit

10 Each computer monitor contains between four and eight pounds of lead that can leach into the soil and pollute groundwater if disposed of improperly. Reusing or recycling unwanted electronic equipment ensures that harmful materials do not make their way into our natural resources. It can also provide computers to people and groups that might otherwise not be able to afford them. Computers that cannot be refurbished can be demanufactured and the component parts recycled. Visit swmp/rrr/computerlist.htm for a list of electronic recyclers. Missouri Department of Natural Resources

The open burning of certain trade wastes and tires also produces toxic emissions harmful to human health; therefore, the open burning of these types of wastes is strictly prohibited. 20 SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH Extra time should be given to educating yourself and your family on how to respond to a disaster, whether natural or manmade. This month, stock your house with survival basics, such as bottled drinking water, canned and dried foods and flashlights with extra batteries, and consider volunteering with emergency services or citizen groups in your area. Working together, we will be better prepared when disaster strikes. Missouri Department of Natural Resources

If you re a contractor, developer, prospective property owner or concerned citizen who wants to take back your community, you might qualify for state funding. 26 Extend the holiday spirit by treecycling! When the tree starts to lose its needles, consider setting it in the backyard as a banquet table for birds and other wildlife. Weighed down, a collection of trees at the bottom of a pond can become a fish habitat by providing cover for small fish and places for their food species to cling until feeding time. More tips are available in the How to Dispose of Christmas Trees brochure. For copies visit Missouri Department of Natural Resources
