Ask Us Anything About Women s Heart & Vascular Health March 24, 2015 Pamela Bartlo, PT, DPT, CCS 1

Women s Heart Risk #1 killer in women WAY higher than all types of cancer. 1 in 3 women die of heart disease or stroke. About 1 death per minute among women or about 422,000 deaths annually in the US. 1 2

Good News Women s knowledge or severity of heart disease almost doubled from More women knew the signs of a woman s heart attack in 2012, but it was still really low (<20% knew some) Still too low of knowledge among minorities. About 35% of African Americans or Hispanics knew that heart disease was the leading killer among women. Whites were 65%. 3

Response to Heart Attack Still wouldn t call 911 enough 2 65% would call if they thought they were having a heart attack 81% would call if they thought someone else was having one Good news is that minority women matched Caucasian women on responses. Were even slightly more likely to call

Biggest Risks for Women Age Weight High Blood Pressure Minorities at more risk most likely due to less awareness of heart disease or stroke Smoking 5

Women s Symptoms Could be chest pain, but many times it isn t Jaw pain Back (near should blades) pain Shoulder pain Arm pain Nausea with or without vomiting Sweating Weakness or fatigue with any other of these 6

Recommendations for Women Quit smoking Increase physical activity/exercise Decrease weight Control blood pressure Adjust diet Use preventive meds as doctor prescribes Cardiac Rehabilitation 7

The Goal of Cardiac Rehab Cardiac Rehab is designed to help each person achieve their level of wellness and activity based on individual needs. 8

What is Cardiac Rehab? Supervised program to help a person recover from a variety of heart related conditions. An outpatient service that can be performed at the hospital or an outpatient clinic. Classes meet 3x per week. Provides education for lifestyle changes and increase in physical fitness. 9

Your cardiac rehab team is a partnership of professionals from these areas: Medical Director - Referring Physicians Nurses - Physical Therapists Exercise Physiologists - Dietitians/Nutritionists Social Services - Pharmacists 10

Components of Cardiac Rehab Supervised progressive exercise/activity Nutrition recommendations Blood pressure and cholesterol monitoring Smoking cessation Stress management Weight management Diabetes monitoring 11

Benefits of Cardiac Rehab Improve heart rate Improve quality of life Reduce lifestyle-related risks Increase knowledge of heart disease and prevention strategies Improve healthy lifestyle choices Improve blood pressure Confidence in your functional ability 12

Who is Eligible? Medicare covers cardiac rehab for those who have had any of the following: Heart Attack - Stent Bypass Surgery - Heart or Valve Surgery Angina - Heart Transplant CHF Private insurances vary, and will be reviewed and cleared by staff prior to starting the program 13

What is the Cost? Most charges are covered by insurance, but there may be a co-pay as well. Staff will assist in finding out your coverage and any out-of-pocket costs prior to starting the program. Maintenance programs help patients continue their commitment to exercise. They are not covered by insurance, so cost is kept low for people. 14

What to Expect? Each session lasts 1 hour Blood pressure and heart rate assessed prior to class Telemetry monitoring Warm-up exercises followed by 4 exercise stations, ending with cool-down exercises Blood pressure and heart rate assessed at end of class 15

Cardiac Rehab Locations Contact the location closest to you with questions regarding their specific program requirements. Mercy Ambulatory Care Center 3669 Southwestern Boulevard Orchard Park (716) Mount St. Mary s Hospital 5300 Military Road Lewiston (716) Sisters of Charity Hospital 2157 Main Street Buffalo (716)
