MINORITY INVESTIGATOR AWARD PROGRAM ANNOUNCEMENT INTRODUCTION: The National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP) Foundation, Inc. Is pleased to announce that it has established a Minority Investigator Award. ELIGIBILITY: Individuals who are eligible to submit applications for this award program include: Physicians, and other medical professionals including fellows who are of minority ethnic groups including African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, and Asian or Pacific Islanders PURPOSE: Minority patients are often underrepresented in oncology clinical trials. Among the frequently cited barriers to increasing minority participation is a lack of minority physicians, and other medical professionals among the researchers conducting the studies. In an effort to begin to address this concern, the NSABP Board of Directors has established a Minority Investigator Award to aid the career development of talented minority researchers in the area of breast and colorectal cancer. The NSABP Minority Investigator Award is designed to provide support for at least 1-year to assist underrepresented minority faculty members or fellows conducting clinical or laboratory research designed to 1) improve the care of patients with breast or colorectal cancer, 2) prevent breast or colorectal cancer, or 3) increase enrollment in clinical trials related to breast or colorectal cancer. FUNDING: The funding for this program is a 1-year, renewable award of not more than $50,000 annually. Funds may be used for partial salary support of the awardee and/or laboratory supplies support. The start date will be May 15, 2002, at which time the initial funds will be distributed. The funding will also include travel to NSABP Group Meetings during the year. Within 60 days of the expiration of the funding period, the awardee will be required to submit a report detailing the activities that relate to the scope of work of the project.

Extra applications may be obtained from the NSABP Web site, The applications will be reviewed by members of the NSABP Scientific Advisory Board and additional individuals as necessary. Applications will be judged on their overall scientific merit, and their compatibility with the research mission of the NSABP.
