8 COLLEGE ADMISSIONS I. SELECTING A COLLEGE: A. Factors to consider 1. Yourself abilities, maturity, finances 2. Colleges location, curriculum, admission standards, housing, cost. B. Steps to begin your college selections 1. Examine college catalogs. 2. Visit college campuses Monday through Friday. 3. Talk with students attending the college. 4. Check web sites for additional information. II. III. APPLYING It is perfectly acceptable to apply to more than one college. Applications are available by contacting the college and requesting information. Student Services has many applications on file, but most prefer students apply online. A. Admissions 1. Read all instructions carefully and fill out the application completely. 2. When you have completed the application take it to the Registrar who will complete the section marked HIGH SCHOOL INFORMATION and attach your transcript and courses you are taking this year. Your application must be mailed from the Student Services Office if not completed online. 3. We recommend that you have your applications in to your college choices before Christmas vacation. Applications to highly competitive programs may need to be sent as early as September. COLLEGE ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS Most colleges require the SAT or the ACT as part of the admissions process. It is NOT necessary to wait until you have taken either test to fill out and send in your college application. Be sure to have your results sent to the colleges that you are considering. It is important that you take the SAT or ACT as soon as possible. If you are planning to register with the NCAA CLEARINGHOUSE, send a copy of your report directly to them. Registration may be done online or a paper copy is available in Student Services.
9 IV. FINANCIAL AID: We strongly recommend that you fill out the FAFSA ( financial aid form. Most two or four-year colleges, vocational schools or technical schools request that you fill out this form. Some college scholarships are dependent on the FAFSA. A meeting will be held at school in January to assist you in completing this document. Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the instrument most commonly used to determine financial need. It is used by colleges, by The State Student Assistance Commission, and by the Federal Basic Opportunity Grant Program. Filing out the FAFSA is required for these programs so the amount of aid needed can be determined. The student and parents should collect all of their income information for the most recent tax year. You will need to complete your IRS income tax forms but you do not need to send your tax forms to the IRS before filling out the FAFSA. This form must be received by the Federal processor on or before March 10th. LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION INFORMATION GENERAL GUIDELINES Read application instructions carefully Request recommendation a week in advance of deadline Include deadline for recommendation letter Give the writer a stamped addressed envelope Verify the letter was sent SELECTING A WRITER A person who will give you a good recommendation A person who is familiar with your potential and achievements A person who has challenged you Select at least one teacher A person who can explain your extra efforts in school or work
