2 Slide 2 Who are we? The Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Centre / Rape Crisis South London Established in1985, London s oldest remaining Rape Crisis Centre. Providing services for women 14 and over in any South London borough primarily from our confidential, specially designed building in central Croydon. Woman-only service, both for clients and staff, in response to the needs of our service users and the disproportionate nature of sexual violence as committed by men against women and girls. Come from a gendered understanding of rape and childhood sexual abuse, believing sexual violence to be both a cause and a consequence of gender inequality.

3 Slide 3 Rape Crisis National Helpline / Everyday and pm National Free phone Number confidential helpline for female callers 14. Open Every Day of the Year from and Offers emotional support and practical information. All helpline workers receive accredited training in providing specialist support to survivors of sexual violence. Provides support and information to: female survivors, partners, family, friends, other support agencies. Receives approximately 4,500 calls per month.

4 Slide 4 RASASC Specialist Counselling Monday Thursday / Low Cost / 12 18mths therapy Female survivors (14) of rape and childhood sexual abuse offered up to one year free/low cost specialist counselling. Fully qualified and experienced counsellors. Accredited centre by the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy). Clients seen for initial meeting within 14 days of receiving their self assessment. Current waiting list up to 4 months for evening appointments. Therapeutic Groups including self esteem workshops, anger workshops and groups for partners, families and friends. Contact Laura on

5 Slide 5 Independent Sexual Violence Advocate RASASC Advocacy (ISVA) Support for clients in South London who have reported to the police and are going through the legal system. Service includes attending SARCS, Police appointments, Court Proceedings. Court familiarisation, explaining legal process and providing information. Emotional and practical information and support. Offers short term grounding sessions for women pre-trial. Offers direct links into specialist counselling at RASASC. Contact Rebecca on

6 Slide 6 Sexual Violence Outreach RASASC Specialist Sexual Violence Outreach Worker Through face-to-face meetings and attendance at drop-ins we: Offer highly qualified, empathic support to female survivors of rape and sexual abuse (14). Facilitate clients accessing RASASC s helpline, counselling and advocacy services. Inform survivors of relevant agencies/health-care/isvas/sexual Assault Referral Centres/Rape Crisis Centres in their area. Give information/referral contacts at a survivor s request. Provide a professional, accountable and confidential service. Contact Katie on

7 Slide 7 Prevention and Training Professionals, Young People, Campaigns Provide specialist training centred on practice based evidence to professionals in South London. Previous trainings: police, social services, housing, drug and alcohol units, Havens, volunteer services. Prevention work in schools and youth settings focusing on gender, consent, coercion and sexualisation. Campaign for better rights for survivors recently successful amendment to extreme pornography legislation to include images of rape.
