1 5N90 Course Outline Graduate Co-op Pre-employment Training Workshop Series Fall 2014 Instructor: Cindy Dunne, Director, Co-op Programs Office Office: MC A336 Phone: x co-op@brocku.ca Class schedule: Tuesdays, 5:00pm 7:00pm Class location: Various (see Sakai for details) Co-op programs: MBA, MBA ISP, MBE, MA History and Master of Sustainability Course Objectives: In these sessions you will be provided with the information necessary to prepare yourself for your work term, understand the expectations of the program, network with industry professionals and familiarize yourself with the processes designed to ensure your job search leads to a successful and meaningful co-op opportunity. The workshop series is absolutely essential in learning about the career possibilities that exist in today s labour market. Identifying employment and industry trends will assist you in determining the path your job search should take. The professionals leading our workshops are almost always senior officers of major corporations. Their support and expertise will prove invaluable to your overall experience. Please respect the time they are giving to assist you in this program and ensure that you make every effort to attend sessions whether or not they suit your individual needs. The relationships you build with such leaders may prove very useful to you when looking for co-op or permanent employment. Expectations and Policy: Please ensure that you understand the expectations and policies set out by the Co-op Programs Office and Brock University. Failure to abide by any of these guidelines could result in disciplinary action. Below is a brief list of workshop requirements. A compressive list can be found in the Graduate Calendar and Graduate Co-op Student Manual. All seminar locations and detailed schedule will be published and updated through the Schedule section in Sakai and it is the student s responsibility to check weekly.
2 Course Evaluation: Attendance All workshops are mandatory that students are expected to attend all scheduled sessions. Co-op Assignments Students are expected to complete co-op assignments on time with high quality. A Satisfactory (SA) or Unsatisfactory (UN) grade will be assessed based on students attendance and ability to meet co-op deadlines during the workshop series. More than ONE absence from the workshop series will result in a UN grade for the 5N90 course and removal from the Co-op option of the degree program. Course Etiquette: We expect our co-op students to be professional business elites and it is important for our students to represent themselves in a professional way during our workshop series. Please observe the following workshop etiquette guidelines to ensure that we continue to project a professional image to our visiting corporate partners. Professional attire is required at all sessions where guest speakers and/or industry professionals will be presenting. Jeans, hats, t-shirts are not acceptable. Students with inappropriate attire will be asked to leave the workshop and will be marked as absent. Cell phones and Laptops must be turned off during the workshops. Surfing, Messaging, Facebook etc. will not be tolerated. No late arrivals, or early departures, without prior permission. Prepare for guest presenters and employers by researching the organization prior to the workshop and prepare relevant questions in advance. Academic Misconduct / Code of Student Conduct: Co-op students should note that copying, plagiarizing, taking attendance for other students, or other forms of academic misconduct, will not be tolerated. Any student caught engaging in such activities will be subject to academic discipline ranging from removal from the Co-op option of the degree program to dismissal from the University, as outlined in the University calendar. Any student abetting or otherwise assisting in such misconduct also will be subject to academic penalties. Please refer to the Brock University Calendar for regulations related to academic / student misconduct. All rules apply to co-op students.

Medical Exemption Policy: The University requires that a student be medically examined in Health Services, or by an off-campus physician prior to an absence due to medical reasons from an exam, lab, test, quiz, seminar, assignment, etc. Student Health Services will provide medical documentation only if: Medically warranted (i.e., a simple cold is not medically warranted) The student presents him/herself to Health Services before the exam The student is seen in the office the day of the exam, lab, etc. If your medical condition requires special consideration for academic activity (e.g., missed seminars or labs, assignment extensions, or examination/test rescheduling) and is on a day or at a time when Health Services is not open, then you must go to another medical facility to obtain the necessary written medical documentation, which is the completion of Brock University's Medical Certificate.
