1 DR. WRIGHT L. LASSITER, JR. EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL AT El Centro COLLEGE Application Instructions for the School Year Applications Due 30 January 2015 Thank you for your interest in Lassiter Early College High School, a partnership of the Dallas Independent School District and El Centro College. Lassiter Early College High School s goal is to support students who are determined to succeed academically so that they can successfully begin college while they are still in high school. Lassiter students will earn a semester s high school credit every nine weeks, and are expected to begin college classes no later than tenth grade. Lassiter students goal should be to make progress earning college credits leading to an associate s degree or credits to transfer to a four-year college. Lassiter students have the freedom that comes with attending school on a college campus in downtown Dallas. This means that they are expected to act responsibly and display the maturity to interact with diverse groups of adults on a college campus at all times. Self-management and self-motivation are essential qualities of successful Lassiter students. The main indicator for success at Lassiter is a desire to attend the school and earn an Associate's Degree. Step 1: Application and Recommendations Application: All students interested in attending Lassiter Early College must complete the application form. Recommendations: Students must have three staff members from their current school complete the recommendation forms. Be sure to hand out the forms early enough for staff members to complete and return them by 30 January Teacher Recommendation Forms should be filled out by your two current teachers in English/Language Arts and Math. Counselor/Administrator Recommendation Form should include your discipline history. Current Transcript/Counselor s Working Document and Attendance Report: The transcript should show all the courses you have taken since sixth grade, courses you are currently taking, and your most recent normed reading and math scores (RediStep, Stanford, etc.) Return all completed forms to the Lassiter Early College Office on or before 12:00 noon. 30 January, It is advised that applications be returned as soon as possible. Step 2: Complete the Test of Adult Basic Education at El Centro College After turning in the completed application, the Lassiter Early College Office will give students a referral form with the date and time for testing. Students take the TABE test at the El Centro Assessment Center in the basement of Building A. This online test takes about 2 ½ hours. The Assessment Center will keep the results and send them to Lassiter Early College. The assessment must be completed by Saturday, 14 February. Step 3: Interview with Students and Parents After completing the application and taking the assessment, potential students will be scheduled for interviews. The interview looks at the student s commitment to working at the college level, motivation, independence, and responsibility. A meeting with Parents/guardians will discuss the degree of parent support for students beginning college classes in ninth grade and will address concerns they may have about the program. Interviews will begin 14 January 2015 based on all items on the checklist being submitted early. Step 4: Parent/Student Orientation Students who have received an acceptance letter are required to attend an orientation program, with a parent/guardian, and complete enrollment documents.

Students will be placed on academic probation if dropped by an El Centro instructor from class after the three-week add/drop period at the beginning of the semester. Students will be placed on academic probation if a college instructor files a minimum deficiency report or if the students fail to turn in Lassiter Early College progress reports. Students will be placed on academic probation for withdrawing from an El Centro class without permission from the Lassiter principal and counselor. Students who fail an El Centro class will be required to retake the class and the equivalent high school class. Students will be placed on academic probation for a failing cycle report card grade in a Lassiter class. Students may be placed on academic or disciplinary probation for non-participation in their high school or college classes, excessive tardiness, or disruptive behavior in violation of school and college policies. Parents will be notified when a student is placed on academic or disciplinary probation and a conference with the parents and the student will be scheduled. Students placed on academic probation may be required to attend tutoring before or after school or on Saturdays. Students who fail to meet the conditions of their probation may be required to leave the program at the end of the semester. LASSITER EARLY COLLEGE TEXTBOOK POLICY Lassiter Early College will pay for required textbooks only. Lassiter Early College approval must be obtained for any optional texts or materials. Lassiter Early College will not pay for calculators or other personal supplies (pens, pencils, paper, and binders). Students who lose a high school or college textbook are responsible for replacing the textbook or reimbursing Lassiter Early College. Students who withdraw from an El Centro class after the bookstore s refund deadline must reimburse Lassiter Early College for the cost of the textbooks. LASSITER EARLY COLLEGE CONSENT Lassiter Early College offers students with college potential the opportunity to complete their high school requirements and earn college credit on the El Centro campus. Lassiter s philosophy is to empower students by giving them choices and treating them as young adults. Progress reports for high school classes are always available but college instructors do not provide the same academic updates through the semester. Students and parents must monitor student progress in their college classes. Students have a responsibility to seek help as soon as they feel they have a problem with any high school or college class. Many college classes earn both high school and college credit. Please realize that poor performance in a college class may jeopardize a student s high school graduation It is imperative that students communicate with their college instructors about progress in their classes. Lassiter Early College requires students to take responsibility for their own behavior, learning, and success. Lassiter Early College students agree to participate in their high school and college classes fully and seriously or return to their home campus. Student obligations include regular attendance and following through on their commitments. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the many opportunities offered at El Centro and will receive the support necessary for their success. Parent/Guardian signature Student signature Date
