2 trade-skills Expansion Due to a massive increase in demand for places on our courses, Tower Hamlets College is expanding its Trade-Skills courses. In order to accommodate the large numbers of young people who are already signing up for a September 2013 start, the college is investing in the development of another Trade-Skills Centre, ready for September The newly expanded offer will be spread over two purpose built facilities in East London. Boasting the very best in state-of-the-art equipment, alongside expert guidance from our lecturers (who have many years of real industry experience), we are the first choice for many learners who wish to train and develop towards a career in: Vehicle and Building Engineering Construction skills Our range of full-time courses and apprenticeship pathways are specifically designed to ensure our learners meet their personalised targets for progression. Our apprenticeship programmes are delivered in partnership with leading companies in the UK. Average Salaries for Skilled Tradespersons Electricians and Electrical Fitters: 28,846 Plumbers and Heating and Ventilation Engineers: 27,866 Skilled construction and building trades: 24,600 Vehicle Technicians and Mechanics: 24,253 Bricklayers and Masons: 23,824 Carpenters and Joiners: 23,285 Painters & Decorators: 22,340 Roofers, Roof Tilers and Slaters: 22,153 Building finishing trades: 22,079 Plasterers: 21,930 Floorers and Wall Tilers: 21,721 Source: ONS (UK average. 4 Entry level Construction (Multi skills) progression: 1E level: E duration: 1 year study times: full time Venue: P You will study basic construction skills to include carpentry, plumbing and guttering. You will also be working on improving your Maths, English and ICT skills and at the same time keeping a record of the activities completed. During the course you will also receive support from a tutor to complete your tasks and progress. An interest in the construction industry, happy to work outdoors and to develop your Maths, English and ICT skills. On completing this course in full and receiving a good reference from your tutor, you will be able to progress on to one of the following: Level 1 Brickwork Level 1 Carpentry and Joinery Level 1 Building services Level 1 Painting and Decorating Level 1 Plastering Multiskills Entry level Motor Vehicle progression: 1E level: E duration: 1 year study times: full time Venue: P You will study Engine operating principles, fuel and exhaust systems, spark and ignition, cooling, lubrication, transmission, wheels and tyres, brakes, steering and suspension. You will also learn safe and correct workshop procedures and how to use specialist tools and equipment whilst at the same time developing your English, Maths and ICT skills. Specifi c Entry Requirements: You will have an interview, where you will need to demonstrate your enthusiasm for the subject as well as your future career plans and aspiration. In addition you will be assessed for current Maths and English abilities to ensure you receive the right support to be successful. Progress to the Level 1 course subject to completing this course in full with a good reference from your tutor Motor VEhiClE level 1 Bricklaying progression: 2E level: 1 duration: 1 year study times: full time Venue: P You will study Health and Safety, site communication skills, setting out, brick and block laying and cavity walling as well as having the opportunity to develop your Maths, English and ICT skills. GCSE grade D in Maths and English or completion of the construction Multi skills qualifi cation with a good reference from your college tutor. Level 2 Bricklaying, employment or an apprenticeship CSkills BriCkWork
5 level 1 Building services progression: E2 level: 1 duration: 1 year study times: full time Venue: P You will study the design, installation, operation and monitoring skills needed for a career in building services. You will also develop your knowledge of scientifi c principles as well as having the opportunity to develop your Maths, English and ICT GCSE grade Ds in Maths and English. A trade specifi c pathway, employment or an apprenticeship EAL Building level 1 Carpentry and Joinery progression: 2E level: 1 duration: 1 year study times: full time Venue: P You will study Health and Safety, site communication skills, producing timber joints and using hand and power tools. You will also develop your Maths, English and ICT skills. GCSE grade Ds in Maths and English or completing the construction Multi skills qualifi cation with a good reference from your college tutor Level 2 Carpentry and Joinery, employment or an apprenticeship CSkills CarpEntrY & JoinErY level 1 Motor Vehicle progression: 2E level: 2 duration: 1 year study times: full time Venue: P You will study Engine operating principles, fuel and exhaust systems, spark and ignition, cooling, lubrication, transmission, wheels and tyres, brakes, steering and suspension, general maintenance and removal and replacement of vehicle units. You will also learn safe and correct workshop procedures and how to use specialist tools and equipment, and at the same time have the opportunity to further develop your English, Maths and ICT skills. No specifi c requirements, but some hands on experience is needed for Level 1. At interview you must demonstrate that you are keen to study and will attend all your classes. Progress to a Level 2 course Motor VEhiClE
6 level 1 painting and decorating progression: 2E level: 1 duration: 1 year study times: full time Venue: P You will study Health and Safety, site communication skills, applying fi nishes with a brush and roller, hanging wallpaper and producing decorative features. You will also develop your Maths, English and ICT skills. GCSE grade Ds in Maths and English or completing the construction Multi skills qualifi cation with a good reference from your college tutor. Level 2 Painting and Decorating, employment or an apprenticeship. CSkills painting & decorating level 2 Electrical installation progression: 3E level: 2 duration: 1 year study times: full time Venue: P You will learn the theory and practical skills covering electrical installation including Health and Safety, electrical installation theory and technology, electrical installation methods, procedures and requirements, electrical installation craft skills and electrical science and principles GCSE grade Cs in maths and English. GCSE Science desirable Level 3 electrical Installation or onto an apprenticeship Building EAL level 2 Motor Vehicle progression: 3E level: 2 duration: 1 year study times: full time Venue: P More advanced engine operating principles, fuel and exhaust systems, spark and ignition, cooling, lubrication, transmission, wheels and tyres, brakes, steering and suspension, routine maintenance, removal and replacement of vehicle units and diagnosis and rectifi cation of vehicle faults. Learn safe and correct workshop procedures and how to use specialist tools and equipment. You will also have the opportunity to further develop your English, Maths and ICT skills You will need to have completed a Level 1 Diploma in Motor Vehicle.
