Eastern Gateway (formerly Jefferson Community College) currently offers nine degrees and three certificates in green focus areas. Eastern Gateway is also currently partnering to deliver degrees in alternative energy technology wind turbine major, computer engineering technology industrial computing applications specialist, and entrepreneurship with the inclusion of a focus on green business development. Partnerships are the foundation upon which Eastern Gateway has been established. The college is borrowing existing community college programs that meet higher education standards to save time and money associated with the development and delivery of new programs, and will develop new programs as the need emerges. Emerging Demand: Eastern Gateway has identified alternative energy - wind turbine, and entrepreneurship in green technologies as emerging demand fields. Emerging Opportunities: Eastern Gateway is actively seeking new college and university partnerships for programming in emerging green technologies, as well as partnering with business and community partners to develop new programs that support the development of new green-focused businesses. 3 Northeast Lakeland Two-Year Degrees: To provide quality learning opportunities to meet the social and economic needs of the community. Lakeland is committed to providing educational programs and job training in support of a green economy. While nuclear energy may not be considered green by some, it is a vital source of emission-free power, currently providing more than 20 percent of America s electricity needs. There is no way for the U.S. to meet the expected 50 percent increase in electricity demands by 2030 and future climate related goals without a strong commitment to Nuclear Power. Lakeland has a well established Nuclear Engineering Technology Program which is accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission (TAC) of ABET, Inc., 111 Market Place, Suite 1050, Baltimore, MD telephone: Our Nuclear Program is also offered via distance learning to colleges in Michigan and Pennsylvania, and receives support from industry leaders including: FirstEnergy, Exelon, and DTE. In addition to Nuclear Engineering Technology, Lakeland has programs in Electronic, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering Technology, which are also accredited by TAC/ABET. These traditional programs will provide the necessary foundational skills to support educational efforts using Solar & Wind Power, Geothermal, Biofuel, and Green Building Technologies. Lakeland recently introduced a new course entitled, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), designed to prepare students for LEED Certification. In coordination with the Engineering division, Lakeland is developing stackable certificates to teach students to support the installation and maintenance of wind turbine systems. 4 Lorain County Ohio Green Pathways Two-Year Degrees: Lorain County Community College, an innovative leader in education, economic, community and cultural development, serves as a regional catalyst for change in a global environment through accessible and affordable academic and career-oriented education, lifelong learning, and community partnerships. Lorain County has launched numerous initiatives as part of its commitment to sustainability in educational career pathway programming and its institutional policies, procedures and programs, beginning with participation in the American Colleges and Universities Presidents Climate Commitment. In addition to new degree and certificate programs in wind turbine technology, the College has begun systematic efforts to infuse sustainable practices and content across the curriculum to better prepare an environmentally aware workforce with context, content, and application skills that can be used in existing as well as emerging business practices. Several grant applications are pending that will support the transformation of every degree and certificate program on campus to include sustainable practices in the course content. Likewise, they will provide faculty with professional development opportunities to increase their Environmental Literacy skills, based on the curriculum developed by Dr. Raquel Pinderhughes, of San Francisco State University. Initial focus will be on the Engineering Technologies programs, including, but not limited to, automation, welding, electronic engineering, and manufacturing engineering. : Additional Degrees: B.S. in Automated Manufacturing Engineering Technology, M.S. in Engineering, B.S. in Environmental Science (these degrees are offered though the University Partnership Career Pathways Program) As an organization, the college established the Green Campus Task Force to coordinate the many efforts of transforming to a sustainable college. Combined, these efforts support the college s commitment to reduce energy use and increase energy efficiencies, reduce the institution s carbon footprint, and increase the capacity of faculty, staff and students to learn about and use sustainable practices in their lives. The Green Campus Task Force functions through a network of several subcommittees to achieve its goals. 5 Northeast North Central State College Two-Year Degrees To provide quality, responsive, lifelong learning opportunities, including occupational, degree and other educational programs for individuals, business and industry, and the communities we serve Kenwood Circle Mansfield, OH North Central State College (NC State) has currently chosen to embed green lesson plans within its credit two-year programs. In the past few years, engineering technology students have performed class projects converting a Chevy S-10 truck from gas to electric, creating a solar concentration mirror to boil a pot of water for a Third-World country village, creation of a 1kW wind turbine, and conducting an extensive energy audit of a large college building. In addition, the college annually sponsors a non-credit workshop on how to convert vehicles from internal combustion to electric for other teachers and enthusiasts. Finally, the college offers several credit and non-credit training programs for the supply chain within several green industries, especially manufacturing. It is in the process of applying to certify these programs through the National Institute of Metalworking Skills. The college is a partner in a $3.5 million request to the Department of Labor covering 14 counties in central and north-central Ohio. If granted, it will expand its offerings to include NABCEP installer certification courses for PV, and customized training for industrial energy efficiency assessments and sustainable manufacturing based on a program from Purdue University s Manufacturing Extension Partnership. Even if these funds are not granted, the College eventually intends to pursue other funding for solar PV installation training. In addition, the college is pursuing erection of a small wind turbine (5kW) adjacent to its engineering technologies and workforce center in Shelby. It has received about half the committed funding and services for this project and has requested the remainder from the Department of Labor. This would allow for further embedded instruction, as well as serve as a training center for wind climber safety. 6 Stark State College of Technology Ohio Green Pathways Two-Year Degrees Stark State College provides high-value, student-centered associate degrees and professional development. The college is dedicated to individual learning, transferable higher education and career success. We advance quality of life through accessibility and business and community partnerships. Stark State College is the sixth largest of Ohio s 23 public twoyear colleges and the largest college in Stark County, with credit headcount of 12,483. The college first demonstrated its commitment to the environment through its participation in Ohio Third Frontier grant programs supporting construction of a Fuel Cell Prototyping Center on its campus and the building s subsequent occupancy by Rolls-Royce Fuel Cell Systems global headquarters. This project led to the development of a fuel cell option in the College s Mechanical Engineering Technology program and growth in the College s support of fuel cell research and development on campus with grant-funded projects with Lockheed Martin; Technology Management Inc.; and Contained Energy, LLC. Through these projects, students get hands-on exposure to fuel cell technology in real-world applications. The college has since expanded its green programs to include the ones listed to the right. Stark State also is undergoing major sustainability efforts in the operation of its facilities, including conversions to environmentally friendly options in cleaning products, lighting, computer technology and construction/renovation projects.
