1 UNIVERSITY OF LA VERNE College of Education and Organizational Leadership COURSE SYLLABUS EDUC 501 Educational Assessment 3 Semester Units (Graduate Credit Only) Prerequisites: Graduate Standing Spring 2010 February 1 May 24 7:00 pm 9:20 pm Professor: Dr. Mark Matzaganian Office: University of La Verne, Barkley Annex, Room 37 Phone: (909) x mmatzaganian@laverne.edu Course Description: This course presents basic principles of assessment as it relates to student educational accomplishment (qualitative and quantitative), and construction and evaluation of educational and psychological tests. It also provides hands-on experience in the use of selected well-known measurement instruments in education. Course Outcomes Students will: 1. Identify the contributions of major theorists in assessment, tests, and measurements. 2. Understand the applications and limitations of different types of educational and psychological assessment instruments, both quantitative and qualitative. 3. Prepare criterion-referenced test items, which distinguish between different levels of the cognitive domain. 4. Understand and use educational and psychological statistical terms and psychometric concepts, including validity, reliability, correlations and variables; and be able to calculate basic descriptive statistics and appropriately use them to solve problems. 5. Be able to review, interpret, evaluate, and communicate testing instruments and methods, including quantitative (e.g., SAT-9), portfolios, aptitude, record reviews,

2 observations, interviews, psychological, interest surveys, and graduation proficiency (or exit) tests, to make appropriate test selection and use. 6. Discuss, analyze, and evaluate the influence of multiple factors in assessment of student achievement, including, but not limited to: cultural, linguistic, ethnic, socio-economic status, gender, peer groups, medical, motivational factors, levels of social/emotional health and support, parental support, school and community support, and school climate and safety. 7. Understand the link between curriculum, testing, and evaluation; and use assessment data to support decision making for individual students and programs. 8. Understand testing assessment sources for test evaluation, test validity, reliability, and usability (e.g. Buros Mental Measurement Yearbook). 9. Know and apply professional standards for the legal and ethical use of tests and other methods of assessment. Activities of Participants Student are expected to 1. Participate in all lectures and demonstrations 2. Read and discuss text 3. Participate in group presentations 4. Participate in group discussions 5. Complete assigned readings, projects, and papers 6. Consult with users of educational or psychological tests 7. View and discuss videotapes 8. Attend class regularly 9. Complete all assignments and exams Course Outline 1. History, role, and rationale of assessment 2. Testing trends, issues, and cultural influences 3. Descriptive statistics and interpretation of assessments 4. Criteria for test selection and techniques of test administration 5. Types of educational and psychological assessment instruments and methods 6. Legal and ethical considerations related to assessment and testing 7. Diagnosis and prescription for psychological and learning problems Grading Criteria Examination 35% Quiz 25% Test Review 20% Group Project and Presentation 20% Class attendance and participation in group discussions is MANDATORY!
