SUMMER SCHOOL Team-up with astronaut Michael Foale & launch your ideas into space! King s College, London - 11th - 15th July,
It was great to learn from such inspirational astronauts and experts through Mission Discovery, I had a fantastic time. - Emily Yeomans, Mission Discovery Student (029)
YOUR MISSION. y Spend your week learning from astronauts, world renowned scientists and NASA leaders, in the UK s most exciting STEM programme! y Take on the role of a research scientist and work as a team on a biomedical project. Your mission is to create an experiment which will be carried out in space. y The winning experiment will be built, launched to the International Space Station (ISS), and carried out in space by astronauts aboard the ISS. y Sign-up for the 5th annual King s College, London Mission Discovery programme and join the forefront of human space exploration. (029)
THE DESTINATION FOR YOUR EXPERIMENT ISSET will have sent 17 experiments to the ISS by This includes work on Genetics, Alzheimer s disease and Parkinson s disease. The image on the left shows astronaut Koichi Wakata, discussing one of the Mission Discovery experiments on Channel 4 s A Week in Space programme. y Astronaut Koichi Wakata performing a Mission Discovery experiment aboard the ISS. Footage can be found on our YouTube channel: Youtube.com/IntSpaceSchool The Space Station is the final frontier of biomedical research. - Forbes Magazine (029)
One of Mission Discovery s winning experiments investigated whether slime mould would grow in 3D, in the microgravity of space. Slime mould has amazing memory capacity and is used to solve complex mapping problems. The results revealed that slime mould grows more vigorously in space compared to on Earth. y The official space patch for our first winning students experiments aboard Cygnus CRS Orb-1. Another winning experiment investigated the effectiveness of antibiotics in space. The results demonstrated that antibiotics are more effective in microgravity compared to on Earth. (029)
INSPIRING Personal Objectives: Learn how to... y Work successfully in a team y Achieve your DofE Gold award y Plan the execution of a project y Deliver a persuasive presentation y Achieve a goal y Confidently speak in public y Follow efficiently and lead effectively y Make your UCAS application stand out! Mission Discovery focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths... The future of STEM starts with you! (029)
S.T.E.M. Mission Discovery experiments receive national media coverage, and our students have appeared on both BBC Breakfast and ITV programmes. People like me don t win things like this. - Mahdi Baksh, on BBC Breakfast talking about her winning experiments launch (029)
MISSION EACH DAY The Mission Discovery team will dine and socialise with students Monday Tuesday for lunch. Personal certificates/prizes will be awarded daily. NASA team-building Leadership types Personal development Teams are formed Previous experiments in space Working in space Design Brief Initial hypothesis ideas
AGENDA Wednesday Thursday Friday Initial research Learn how to budget and plan your experiment Experiment size and access limitation Presentation skills How space can improve life on Earth Mission completion certificates Final presentations Mission Discovery students vote Winners announced
Mission Discovery will introduce you to the highest level of NASA Leadership, Space Exploration and Biomedical Research. Below is just a small selection of the members who will make up the 2016 team. There will be special VIP guest visits throughout the week, including Former Director of NASA s Kennedy Space Centre, Jay Honeycutt. Mike Foale - Astronaut, Astrophysicist & ISS Commander Mike Foale is the most experienced British astronaut in the history of human space travel. Mike has flown on 6 Space Shuttle Missions, a Soyuz, and lived on 2 Space Stations. He was the first Briton to perform a spacewalk during which he replaced components of the Hubble Space Telescope. Mike was awarded the Yuri A Gagarin Gold Medal, and in 2003 became an ISS Commander. Sarah Murray - Assistant Chief of EVA, Robotics & Crew Systems Sarah is responsible for the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory space-walking training facility. Sarah s worked as an Astronaut Trainer, in Mission Control, and as Deputy Chief of Space Flight Training Management. Sarah chaired the International Training Control Board responsible for Astronaut training across the ISS partners. Sarah led the Columbia Recovery Office following the Space Shuttle disaster. Dr. Julie Keeble - Lecturer of Pharmacology Julie lectures in the Institute of Pharmaceutical Science at King s. Her research focuses on the role of sensory nerves in pain, inflammation and thermoregulation. Julie is the module organiser for MSci Integrative Physiology & Pharmacology research. She is also a member of the British Pharmacological Society, the Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and the Centre of Human & Aerospace Physiological Sciences. Prof. Steve Harridge - Professor of Human and Applied Physiology Steve is a Professor of Human & Applied Physiology and a Director of the Centre of Human and Aerospace Physiological Sciences at King s College, London. His research focuses on human skeletal muscle function, and its effect on the ageing process. Steve is an editor for both the Experimental Physiology journal and the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports. Chris Barber - Space Educationalist Founder of the International Space School Educational Trust (ISSET). ISSET has been developed to be the UK s most exciting space educational organization, running programs in the UK, USA, China, Arctic and India. Chris has had extensive careers in both finance and education. He is also a Leadership and Organizational Improvement Consultant. (029)
I can say without doubt that Mission Discovery is the best thing I have ever taken part in. - Riya Khan - Mission Discovery Student y In the lecture theatre at 2015 King s College, London with Chris Barber and Sarah Murray.
LOCATION King s College, London is one of the top 20 universities in the world... A research led university based in the heart of London, King s has nearly 25,000 students from 140 countries. King s has one of the largest Medical Schools in Europe and is one of the leading research Universities for biomedical research. It is also home to the Centre of Human & Aerospace Physiological Sciences (CHAPS). CHAPS is focused on human physiology its adaptation in health and disease. (029)
Why Biomedicine? Mission Discovery has a biomedical focus. Biomedicine is essentially the science of investigating the basis of health and disease in humans and animals. For astronauts to remain fit and healthy it is important that we understand how the body responds and adapts to space travel.this study of the astronauts health can help increase our understanding and disease processes that affect us here on Earth. (029)
y Mike Foale repairing the Hubble Space Telescope during the Space Shuttle s highest ever orbit.
Mission Discovery is the most complete and exciting educational programme I have been involved with. I m always excited to see where the students imagination takes them and watch them develop throughout the week. When I was young, I would have loved the chance to have an experiment flown in space. - Astronaut Michael Foale
Mission Discovery was, by far, the most comprehensive, interesting, and educational endeavour I have been involved with. - Mike McCulley Former NASA Astronaut and President of United Space Alliance Mission Discovery has been led by over 10 different astronauts and has taken place all around the UK, in the US and Australia.
