2 7 Ways Staffing Agencies Can Leverage LinkedIn It takes more than a profile presence to prove your unique value. About this paper In this white paper, you will learn how to find the right candidates in this channel - and better yet - optimize your own LinkedIn profile so candidates may find you. O f all the social media channels available to help staffing agencies find candidates and clients, LinkedIn is at the top of the list. When users go to LinkedIn, they re there because they mean business. The site is a professional clearinghouse and because everyone knows that, your staffing agency starts off with a glow of credibility by staking a plot on the LinkedIn landscape. But it takes more than a profile presence to prove your unique value. LinkedIn has over 400 million profiles. You need to separate yours from the crowd. Check these 7 ways staffing agencies can leverage LinkedIn for optimal results: 1. Use SEO to Attract Audiences It may go without saying but we ll say it anyway: Your corporate profile should incorporate keywords that candidates and clients might use to find you, but be sure those words aren t wasted. (The optimal number is 5). Also, be sure to provide links to your website (you d be surprised how many companies neglect to do so!). Having trouble deciding which keywords to incorporate? Use the free Google AdWords tool to discover how many searches various keywords receive. You can also look through your competitors LinkedIn profiles to see which keywords searchers are using to find them. LinkedIn offers further best practices on optimizing your company page and engaging your followers. Page 2

Reach Out Through InMail Contrary to the free LinkedIn messaging system where you can contact others only through those in your network, InMail (available by upgrading your account) sends your message directly to those outside your account. Upgrading your account also allows you to send InMail in mass and utilize templates. Your InMail message has a higher degree of credibility because it comes with your LinkedIn page attached so your recipient can view your profile. It can only be sent to members who share your interests (such as career opportunities ), so members can be sure you have a legitimate reason to contact them. However, you need to use InMail judiciously, as you have a limited amount available each month. 3. Join Groups and Participate In Discussions LinkedIn features multiple groups geared toward staffing and recruitment. If you re having trouble finding ideal candidates, a strong network of fellow recruiters can help you find your way through the forest of potential prospects. Check out these groups to see how you can grow your network of fellow professionals: Recruitment Consultants and Staffing Professionals IT Staffing and Services Linked: HR The Recruiter Network Networked Recruiter In addition to these large groups, you may find niche groups that more closely fit the industries you specialize in staffing. Hit the search tab and use the drop down menu for more specific matches. You can also create your own group and effectively expand your reach throughout the network. Once you ve created your group and invited members, be sure to keep an active discussion. Members will be more likely to join when they see that relevant solutions, suggestions and news updates are available regularly. Page 3

4 4. Import Your Contacts You can expand your reach by importing your complete contact list into LinkedIn. Just go to the Grow your network link at the top of the page and you ll have the ability to copy and paste addresses or link to your Hotmail or Gmail accounts. You can also click on Add Contacts under the My Network tab and import a file from your computer. There are specific instructions to import your Outlook Contacts file if you go to Connections under the My Network tab and select the Settings icon at the top. You can also export your LinkedIn contacts by clicking on My Network, Connections and selecting the Settings icon. On the right, you will see the option for Export LinkedIn Connections. Selecting this option will allow you to effectively ensure that you are using your LinkedIn Connections to your advantage. 5. Include Passive Candidates in Your Searches To find the best candidates, you need to understand how they use LinkedIn. Are they passive candidates? If they are, they won t be actively browsing for positions, so you need to find them through your network. Instead of merely describing the job skills your recruitment prospect needs to have, create the profile of your perfect candidate. Then, ask those in your network if they know people who fit this description. Create the profile to read like a rock-star bio. This will make it easier for your connections to give you spot-on candidate suggestions that fit your bill because your ideal profile helped them actually visualize a person who embodies the qualities you re looking for. Also, when conducting candidate searches on LinkedIn, many of the people you identify as good prospects may not be actively engaged in job searching. Recruiters and staffing professionals should always try to connect with these people anyway. The objective is to develop a list of target candidates over time and follow their profile so you will be aware of when things change for them. Two signals that may indicate an interest in a new job are: changes in profile (other than promotion) such as achievements, skills, and responsibilities; and an increase in activity such as rapid growth in their network, or an increase in posting updates, sharing and commenting. 5 6. Promote Your Company and Jobs LinkedIn offers a variety of different ways to further promote your staffing agency and the jobs you are trying to fill. Staffing agencies can benefit from any number of choices such as: Work With Us Ads targeted advertisement that displays your company or specific jobs in the sidebar of a candidate researching or connecting with one of your employees. Career Pages a separate page from your Company Page that allows you to highlight and personalize the experience for candidates looking for jobs at your staffing agency. Job Posting harness all of the power of LinkedIn s data to recommend the right job to the right candidate. All of the above are premium options through LinkedIn, but may be well worth the investment to reach your target candidates. 7. Expand Your Reach LinkedIn has several ways of finding more contacts. You can utilize the Advanced Search capability to find companies or individuals with whom you have mutual connections. You can also use the LinkedIn companion for Firefox, which allows you to identify the profiles of members who you and giving you a quicker view of potential new contacts. By upgrading your LinkedIn account, you gain access to view all LinkedIn profiles instead of being limited to your network of connections. Combined with the premium search filters, you are able to find more talent compared to your basic account. You can also setup alerts to notify you when new candidates match your search criteria. LinkedIn is a one-stop destination for networking, news updates, outreach, education and promotion. There s no doubt that the channel should be a major part of every staffing agency s social media marketing plan.
