2 Education is Our Greatest Tool Be the Warrior for Our Future The Washington State Indian Education Association (WSIEA) Board of Directors invite you to join us in celebrating our 31 st Annual Washington State Indian Education Association Conference being held March 30 to April 1, 2015, at the Yakima Convention Center, 10 North 8 th Street, Yakima, Washington, 98901, located in downtown Yakima. We know that Native students at all levels in the educational system deserve a high quality education that prepares them for whatever future they envision. Please join us to celebrate and support WSIEA s on-going efforts to improve the quality of education for Native American and Alaska Native students in Washington State so they may reach their potential. We will offer relevant keynote presentations, informative workshops, cultural offerings, and a merit awards and recognition presentation at our Thursday evening WSIEA Awards Banquet. Participants are also provided with a great time to network and share great ideas from fantastic people doing incredible and transformational work around the state. Don t miss the annual meeting on Monday afternoon, March 30, for your opportunity to guide the organization in its mission and perhaps consider running for a WSIEA Board of Directors position. This conference would be greatly beneficial to K-12 educators, early childhood educators, tribal education departments, higher education educators, high school and higher education students, and all who work in Indian education through public, tribal, and home schools. Persons being nominated must be current members (conference registration fee includes 2015 WSIEA membership dues) and present to accept a nomination. There will be one nominating session to nominate new board members. 4 Lodging Information We are excited to be back in the Yakima area and have coordinated a block of rooms with two hotels adjacent to the Yakima Convention Center to provide our conference participants with a choice for lodging. Holiday Inn Downtown Yakima, 802 East Yakima Avenue, Yakima, Rates: $83/night single occupancy (gov t rate), $103 double, $113 triple, and $122 quad Taxes/fees: 11.2% tax + $2 tourism fee Cancellation: 24 hours in advance Cut Off Date: March 1, 2015 Check in: 4 p.m. Check out: 11 a.m. Cut off date: Sunday, March 1, 2015 Reservations: 509/ Howard Johnson Hotel, 9 North 9 th Street, Yakima, WA, Rates: $65/night single or double occupancy (king bed or two queen bed rooms) Taxes/fees: 11.2% tax + $2 tourism fee Cancellation: 24 hours in advance Cut off date: Sunday, March 15, 2015 Check in: 3 p.m. Check out: 11 a.m. Reservations 509/ After the cut off date, unused guest rooms will revert back to the respective hotel for general sales. Rooms reserved after the cut-off date may not be booked at the negotiated group rate and room availability cannot be guaranteed. Whichever hotel you choose, please call and make your reservation by the cut off date to lock in our guaranteed rate. WSIEA Native Student Day On Tuesday, March 31, from 9:00 am to 4:45 pm, the WSIEA will offer a youth strand featuring events, great speakers, workshops, and interactive activities geared toward Native youth, which will run parallel to the main conference within the conference hotel. Sign up your students on this year s WSIEA registration form (see attached form). The registration fee for students just participating in our March 31 student day activities will be $25 and will include lunch, snacks, and session materials. Clock Hours Clock Hours and CEUs will once again be offered for all participants. 5 Culture Room We are excited to continue to offer the Culture Room again this year. The purpose of this room is to provide a hands-on experience for educators to participate in culturally relevant activities within Native American culture. Local Native Americans will be invited to be a part of this interactive culture room and may include: beading, carving, cedar work, sewing regalia, drum making, jewelry making, painting, basket making, and other activities. If you would like to lead a craft session in the culture room, please contact Vivian DelaRosa at 509/ Vendor Information Vendors are always a welcome addition to our annual conference. We also welcome non-profit informational and educational boots. The fees are as follows: For-profit - $175 for all three days Non-profit - $125 for all three days All vendors are requested to donate one item for the WSIEA door prize drawings or silent auction. To reserve a vendor booth contact Jason LaFontaine at 253/ or jlafontaine@psesd.org. You will find additional information on the registration form attached as the last page of this packet. Spaces will be reserved on a first received, first served basis. *Exhibitor fees do not include any conference activities such as meals. However, meal tickets to the Awards Banquet may be purchased at the registration table. Silent Auction WSIEA will be holding a silent auction during the conference to support our recognition and scholarship awards. 6 Recognition and Student Merit Awards The Washington State Indian Education Association takes an opportunity each year during our annual conference to acknowledge accomplishments of Native individuals who have significantly contributed to the education of Native peoples.
