3 Measurements Get Together A broad spectrum of advanced technology solu;ons and novel protec;on and control techniques will deliver new modes of integrated power system protec;on and control. Supported by the Global Posi;oning System, the Synchronized Measurement Technology (SMT) is one of those key technologies. While the SMT is already commercially available, the development of its applica;ons, par;cularly from Supergrids viewpoint, is s;ll in its infancy. The focuses of this tutorial are to discuss the challenges related to the development of such applica;ons, the need for them in terms of the structure of future networks, the deployment of architectures for mul;- purpose applica;ons given different grid topologies, genera;on mixes and diverse opera;onal challenges. Wide- Area Monitoring, Protec;on and Control (WAMPAC) is a concept that involves the use of system- wide informa;on and the communica;on of selected local informa;on to a remote loca;on. SMT is an important element and enabler of WAMPAC. A successful novel applica;ons require a carefully designed WAMPAC architecture. The communica;on requirements for future real- ;me applica;ons can be high, so an op;mal design of WAMPAC architecture is a prerequisite for the successful implementa;on of the SMT. However, the first control and protec;on applica;ons based on SMT require a host of challenges to be addressed. They will be discussed in the tutorial. Vladimir Terzija is the EPSRC Chair Professor in Power Systems Engineering in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at The University of Manchester. Before joining the School in July 2006, he has spent six years with ABB, Germany, where he provided technical exper;se on switchgear, power system protec;on and distribu;on automa;on. In his research team he has currently 6 MSc project students, 11 PhD students and 2 Postdoctoral Research Associates.
4 Relevant HVDC CharacterisOcs and Interface Parameters for IntegraOng new HVDC schemes into Transmission Grids Due to the increase of new HVDC applica;ons for interconnec;ng countries or bringing clean forms of energy from off- shore Wind Farms, the need to understand HVDC principles of opera;on and its main interfacing parameters with the AC grids to be interconnected, has been an issue becoming more and more important for U;li;es, TSOs and Regulators. This presenta;on will provide a condensed descrip;on of the key data and parameters to be analyzed when dealing with a new HVDC applica;on entering to the market. Both HVDC technologies, Thyristor- based (LCC) and IGBTs- based (VSC) semiconductors devices will be considered, in a compara;ve manner, in the Tutorial. Marcio Szechtman is presently ac;ng as Independent Advisor to U;li;es, Regulators and Investors, with emphasis in the Transmission segment of the electric power industry.
