2 About the Programme The Santander Student Internship Programme is designed to provide paidfor entrepreneurial internships to finalyear students and recent graduates, whilst giving local businesses an opportunity to tap into a pool of some of the brightest young talent emerging from the university system. Each internship is 3 months in duration and the intern receives 1,000 per month through the Programme: Santander contributes 1,500 funding to businesses participating in the programme, essentially providing part of a salary for the successful applicants. Employers will provide matching funds. The Internship programme provides small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with access to a network of top university graduates who are available for three-month funded work placements. It s a mutually beneficial partnership, with graduates gaining invaluable experience in the workplace, and SMEs accessing talented and ambitious graduates. Students gain valuable first-hand experience by contributing to a business where their drive and education can make a tangible impact. Attracting, retaining and managing the right talent is a permanent challenge for fastgrowth SMEs, who will always need skilled, innovative people. For students, getting that first break can often make all the difference when trying to land a promising career. Having Santander s financial support and brand on their CVs can make all the difference to future employers. 3 A message from Luis Juste Director of Santander Universities UK When we launched our internship programme last year the University of Bath fully embraced this initiative. With the collaboration of the whole university community the programme has seen 9 students getting an internship position with most of them due to finish in September. This is an excellent result for the University but also for the city of Bath ensuring that it retains its most talented young people, as this will eventually generate wealth for the region. At Santander Universities we have been partnering with the University of Bath and the Students Union since 2008 and we are extremely proud of the numerous initiatives and activities that this partnership has generated. Our Chairman, Emilio Botin announced the second edition of the Internship programme in June and new internships are already taking place. We look forward to hearing more successful stories from these new interns. Luis Juste Director of Santander Universities UK A message from Ian Robinson CEO University of Bath Students Union The Students Union has been delighted to support the first year of the Santander Universities internship scheme. The Students Union has been working alongside local businesses and B&NES council to increase job opportunities within the city of Bath as we have been seeing many of our talented graduates leaving Bath for larger cities. The internship scheme allows small and medium sized businesses access to financial support to enable them to employ one of the country s outstanding graduates. I believe it is schemes such as Santander s internship programme which have been instrumental in helping to give our students experiences beyond their academic studies and to take advantage of opportunities for their own development and future employability. We are excited to continue working alongside Santander Universities for the benefit of our students and the local business community. 4 2012/13 Santander Student Interns Student: David Alberto Canepa Talamas SME: Aerotails LTD Internship Title: General Assistant My experience as an intern has been great. I have had the opportunity to be able to be involved in almost all the cycle a product goes through. Starting with the visit to a client, and listening to what he would like, what are his problems, desires and priorities. Then participating in the design of prototypes, a little involvement with the manufacturing (more as an observer) of the prototype. Finally participating in the installation of the product. This has helped me to understand a little bit more how an idea can become reality, and make things happen. 4

5 Student: Elliot Campbell SME: University of Bath Students Union: Advice and Representation Internship Title: Community Coordinator In my role as the Community coordinator I have been responsible for managing the University of Bath Students Union s Hall Reps scheme and recreational interhall competitions. My experience as an intern has been an incredibly rewarding one, not only have I been allowed to take on my own projects and manage my own workload, I ve also learnt a number of valuable skills that I can take with me into future employment. 5

6 Student: Robert Chokr SME: CloudFind Ltd. Internship Title: Digital Marketing Intern If I would have to pick one word to describe my experience so far at Cloudfind, that would be awesome. The company is trying to launch a cloud application, and being a start-up means that its credo is by definition agile. This coupled with the volatility of the environment in which it operates (cloud computing/ storage) means that there s a lot going on and that you need to constantly adapt to changes in the each and every aspect of the business. Plainly put, this means you re learning far more than you would normally learn in large corporations, since your responsibility isn t limited to the position you re filling (digital marketing). Student: Lei Zeng SME: CloudFind Ltd. Internship Title: Developer Intern This is such a great opportunity for me to learn how to program like a real programmer. I have learnt many things that are impossible to learn from lectures. I found that only the use of knowledge gained from books is not easy. One must be very acquainted with practical skills in order to apply them whilst at work. Thanks to my colleagues and supervisors, I have not only learnt how to use my knowledge from university, but have also had the chance to participate in a real business. 7 Student: James Isbister SME: Intohand Internship Title: Software Developer and R&D My time is split equally into 3: 1/3 RESEARCH: aimed to benefit both Intohand and my future research interests. 1/3 SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT: Building ios apps for clients and Intohand. 1/3 MY OWN PROJECT: Completing my own ios app that I hope to release. The programme has allowed me to expand my creative, academic, technical and entrepreneurial skills. I have learnt vast amounts about how an SME is run there are not many places where an intern could work in the same office as the CEO! Having joined Intohand at such an exciting time has given me a thirst to make my own business succeed, as well as a certain responsibility. 7

8 Student: Charlotte Keen SME: KOJI Drinks Internship Title: Brand/SM Manager Working with KOJI has been really rewarding. The company is still small, but growing quickly and it is exciting to be a part of that. I have a lot of flexibility with my work and have learnt new skills that are incredibly useful. I have been working on transforming the company image into a lifestyle brand, which has been really fun. I may even have the opportunity to stay on with the company, in a part time role, whilst I continue my studies!

9 Student: Lucy Macmillan SME: 3Vision Limited Internship Title: Emerging Markets Researcher Working as an intern at 3Vision has been a fascinating and rewarding experience. Through my involvement in both sides of the company, 3Vision Distribution and 3Vision Consulting, I have been exposed to different areas of the business and conversed with a range of international clients. My primary role as a researcher has required me to source and analyse data in relation to the TV market in Latin America and Asia, assessing the range of cultural and economic issues surrounding content acquisition. As a language graduate, I have also been able to assist the sales team as a translator. I have really enjoyed working as part of a small team in a dynamic media environment. Lucy is the first person from the right 9

10 Student: Stephanie Marlow SME: Lovehoney Ltd Internship Title: Trade Marketing Assistant I have learnt a lot about the industry and about life in an office job. I have made plenty of contacts at the company and used my degree skills to a great effect. Sometimes I found there was not enough work to keep me occupied, so I began helping out with another department of the company and found I enjoyed that a lot more. There is now the chance that I will be given a full time position in that department. Overall, it has been a great experience and my new knowledge of systems such as salesforce are a great addition to my CV. 10

11 Student: Merlin O Doherty-Alb SME: Lovehoney Ltd. Internship Title: Trade Marketing Assistant I have found the experience to be very positive. The general office environment is refreshing, as it strongly contrasts my only other experience of working in an office. Everyone knows each other and is very welcoming and friendly, which makes you feel part of everything going on, rather than just being an intern who is there to observe from the outside. It has been, for the most part, a great learning experience, which has proven to be a great relief to me as I am now more aware of the variety of unique opportunities offered by SME s. Throughout the last year of Uni, it is very easy for your view of the job market to become distorted. There is a great emphasis placed on gaining employment through grad-schemes with the same 4-5 companies. It can feel as though you are putting your degree to waste if you are not actively pursuing a job with those companies, which I now know is not the case! 11
