Annual Report
Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Every day at Catholic Charities we meet neighbors in need. Our neighbors are young and old, of all races and ethnicities, of all faiths or no faith and with many different presenting issues. These neighbors find their way to us when life and society has left them bruised and in need of Christ s love. Deacon Dan Powers CEO Catholic Charities of Kansas City-St. Joseph Due to the generosity of our donors, the tenacity of our volunteers and the compassion of our employees, we pick our neighbors up and bind up their wounds. Last year over 84,000 neighbors came to us in need 84,000 neighbors in need of a smile, a kind word and a compassionate hand. And we cared for them as Christ asked us to care for them. I am so humbled by the good work that Catholic Charities does for our neighbors in need. Thank you for being a part of this good work. Thank you for seeing your neighbor in need and not passing by. This is the Gospel in action. May Almighty God bless you for your commitment to the poor, Deacon Dan
Annual Report Catholic Charities of Kansas City-St. Joseph And who is my neighbor? Luke 10:29 The family finding a way out of poverty To Debra, family is everything. But after a series of setbacks, her children were placed in foster care, and Debra needed a home and a job so she could reunite with them. Through the Services for Young Families program, Debra found an apartment and paid the first months rent. She earned her GED and found work. And she regained custody of four happy children. It s the best thing in the world, said Debra. I couldn t have done it without the extra help from Catholic Charities. That drove me to bring my children home. Our Housing Programs provided 1,270 households with rental assistance and received a 99% client satisfaction score in The veteran welcomed home James*, a decorated Air Force veteran, transformed his life in the Supportive Services for Veteran Families program. Financial worries and high blood pressure threatened his home and health. James case manager helped him create a budget and challenged him to trade fast food for healthier groceries. When he successfully completed the SSVF program, James had lowered his blood pressure, started an exercise program and caught up with his rent and utilities. Our Supportive Services for Veteran Families served 142 households and received a 99% client satisfaction score in (*Name changed at client s request.) The senior aging with dignity At 95 years old, Henrietta wanted to remain in her own home, surrounded by familiar comforts. But increasing health challenges made it difficult for her and her family. Henrietta s daughter contacted Catholic Charities In-Home Services for help. It changed her life, her daughter, Deb, said. The in-home service program helped Henrietta continue aging in place. Caregivers make sure clients like Henrietta have tidy homes, organized medication and much-needed peace of mind for their families. It s a blessing, Deb said, to have that stress lifted. Our Senior Care In-Home Services program provided 450 clients with 60,182 hours of care and received a 99% client satisfaction score in The former offender rejoining community After decades in prison, Kevin vowed never to return. But upon release, he didn t just need the basics clothing, housing, even toothpaste and soap Kevin needed a plan for his future. He found both at Catholic Charities TurnAround program. Kevin received emergency assistance, case management and job training that helped him rent an apartment, land a steady job and honor his vow. It makes such a difference in so many lives, Kevin said. The folks at Catholic Charities showed me there is no reason to give up on yourself. Our TurnAround program served over 400 clients, maintained a 16% recidivism rate, and received a 100% client satisfaction score in These are our neighbors. Our Vision: A community that is transformed as it empowers the vulnerable to lead lives of dignity and self-determination. Our Mission: Inspired by the Gospel mandate, Catholic Charities transforms lives and communities through hope-filled care, services and advocacy.

Catholic Charities of Kansas City-St. Joseph In the Parable of the Good Samaritan, a scholar asks Jesus, And who is my neighbor? Jesus answers that it is the man who shows mercy and love to the traveler who was robbed, beaten and abandoned on the side of the road. Go and do likewise, He says. At Catholic Charities, we meet our neighbor in every person who comes to our door seeking help. For 135 years, we have made it our mission to serve the poor and marginalized with mercy and love. In , this is how we served our neighbors: 84,318 58,712 17,326 9,242 3,496 2, unduplicated people directly benefited from hope-filled care, services and advocacy provided by Catholic Charities of Kansas City-St. Joseph. people received food through our senior centers, home-delivered meals and food banks and pantries. people received emergency assistance: help with rent, utilities, transportation, clothing and other basic needs. volunteer hours were dedicated to our mission of transforming lives and communities. people received social support including case management, in-home care, mentoring, information and referral services. people were sheltered or received assistance that allowed them to remain in their homes. people received counseling and mental health services. older adults received health-related services including exercise programs, health screenings and dentures. people received parenting, marriage and financial literacy education. Lynn Timothy relies on groceries from House of Bread Food Pantry in St. Joseph when there isn t enough money to make it to the end of the month. We come to House of Bread to get food to feed our family, she says as she bounces her baby on her lap. Sometimes, the children wouldn t have enough to eat without it. Elaine Ingle is a long-time volunteer for Catholic Charities and currently chairs the Northwest Advisory Council. People need us to be the hands of Christ as we go out and do His work in our communities. Sometimes you just have to ask, How can I help? Jennifer is determined to create a strong financial future for herself. Through Catholic Charities Financial Education and Economic Security program, she opened a matched savings account for college and is now a promising student at UMKC. Knowing I can save money and spend it wisely has transformed my life. I don t have to worry about tuition and board, so I can concentrate on my studies and my future.
Annual Report 135 Years of Serving Our Neighbors A Future Filled with Promise & Hope Honoring Those Who Served Catholic Charities of Kansas City-St. Joseph embarked on landmark projects in to honor our nation s veterans. Many of these men and women return to civilian life without homes, jobs or access to vital resources. Our Supportive Services for Veteran Families and St. Michael s Housing Services empower them to lead lives with honor and dignity in the same way they wore the uniform. In 2014, our commitment to veterans grows. The first phase of St. Michael s Veterans Center, a national model for ending veteran homelessness, will open in the spring of The project combines permanent, safe and affordable housing with comprehensive case management and supportive services on one campus. When complete, St. Michael s Veterans Center will have 180 apartments and 10,000 square feet of space for these wrap-around services. Teaching Economic Empowerment to Women and Girls Catholic Charities provides case management and support for up to 3,500 low-income women and girls annually. In doing so, the agency identified a need to address inequality in their access to financial education, job readiness and employment. The Women s Economic Empowerment Program addresses this disparity through workshops that focus on money management, credit building and financial goal setting. A grant from the Women s Foundation of Greater Kansas City will allow the program to meet its objectives: creating accessible and affordable paths to education, supporting the financial education of women and breaking down economic barriers by teaching earning, saving and growing money. A New Model for Client-Centered Services Catholic Charities takes a new approach to serving clients in The agency will shift from program-specific services to long-term, holistic and sustainable success focused on each client s individual needs. Catholic Charities is committed to providing comprehensive case management and addressing the underlying causes of poverty to achieve its vision: empowering the vulnerable to lead lives of dignity and self-determination.
