1 A-LEVEL TEACHER TRAINING COURSE A SYDNEY UNIVERSITY-DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION (SPAIN)- CERVANTES INSTITUTE JOINT INITIATIVE Commencing June 2015 Course description: In recent years, the importance of foreign language teachers qualifications has become more and more apparent; simply being a native speaker of a language is not the same as the ability to teach it. Rather, teachers must know how a foreign language is both taught and learnt. The A-Level teacher training course is aimed at people who want to acquire a basic knowledge of the methodology and pedagogy of Spanish as a foreign language, as well as those with experience in education who wish to ground their practicallyacquired knowledge in a strong theoretical base. Students of this course will attain a basic understanding of the theories of language learning and linguistics; reflection on and analysis of existing teaching materials and resources will help students develop the necessary tools to prepare simple lesson plans and grasp the basics of classroom management. Teaching Level: A-level A-level courses are aimed at those who want to start developing their teaching skills (or are in the early stages of that development) with no more than 300 hours of professional experience, or less than 30 hours of specialised training. However, anyone with more experience or specialised training who is still interested in gaining a stronger theoretical base for their teaching is also welcome to enrol in the course. Intended students: - Graduates who wish to specialise in the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language. - Teachers of Spanish as a second or foreign language. - Teachers of other foreign languages.
2 Student objectives: - Gain a basic understanding of education and learning theory, as well as how the language works, in order to respond to language students questions at A1 and A2 levels. - Become familiar with teaching materials, resources and reference works currently available. - Plan classes with the help of the teacher's book, and develop longer-term teaching strategies with a specific goal over the course of a term or session. - Apply basic procedures to correct students and assess their progress, as well as improving teaching overall. - Observe and participate, with teacher guidance, in actual classes within a particular teaching context. Become aware of what it means to be a teacher of Spanish as a foreign language: planning, implementation and evaluation of teaching, as well as the socio-affective, institutional and administrative dimensions of the profession. - Become familiar with techniques for managing student-teacher interaction and group dynamics. This course has been designed to develop key teacher competencies: - Organise learning situations. - Evaluate student learning and behaviour. - Involve students in reflecting on their own learning. - Facilitate intercultural communication. - Develop professionally as a teacher. - Manage emotions over the course of the job. - Actively participate in the workplace. - Make use of information technology and electronic resources in teaching. Content Part 1: 55 hours - Action-orientated focus (5h) - Methodology (6h) - The grammar of pedagogy (5h) - Oral comprehension and expression tasks (4h) - Written comprehension expression tasks (4h) - Introduction to pragmatics (3h)
3 - Teaching of phonetics (2h) - Teaching of culture (2h) - Lesson planning (6h) - Professional development (3h) - Teaching resources (3h) - Teaching of vocabulary (3h) - Teaching of grammar (3h) - Group dynamics (3h) - Treatment of mistakes (3h) Part 2: 10 hours Practicals: - Preparation for practicals (1h) - Observation of classes (9h) Part 3: 20 hours Practicals: - Preparation for practicals (4h) - Practicals (6h) Student work: (10h) Methodology: This course is practical-orientated. The methodology encourages participation and collaborative work among students. Tasks will include observation, critical analysis and interpretation (with reference to methodological guidelines) of presented teaching techniques and classroom resources. Assessment: Students will be assessed on their presentation of a brief practical report that is also grounded in the theoretical framework. To receive the certificate of achievement, attendance is mandatory and absences, regardless of the cause and duly justified, may not exceed 15% of the total duration of the course. Location: Sydney University/Cervantes Institute centre
4 Duration and Time: 85 hours (55 hours of classroom work on theoretical aspects; 30 hours of practicals and student work). Class Schedule: Commence date: 5 June 2015 The course runs until November, 2015 Part 1: 55 hours Face-to-Face course on Fridays (from 3:00-7:30) & Saturdays (10:00-6:30): 5-6 June June June June 3-4 July Part 2: 10 hours Observations Class Observations. These are to be coordinated with the Tutors and are to take place during the Part 2 of the course. They are expected to be completed at the conclusion of Part 2 of the course, on 6 September. Part 3: 20 hours 4 x practicals of preparation time and 6 x practicals of face-to-face teaching to be completed before the end of October Enrolment fee: $2,555 Price includes the practicals, material provided during the course, and issuing of certificates. 5 REQUIREMENTS 1 : - Bachelor in an area listed below (or related degree). - Bachelor of Languages - Bachelor of International Studies - Bachelor of Arts (Languages) - Level of Spanish: B2 or C1 - Attendance of 80% of classes (to receive diploma and hand in final assessment task). - Send CV and cover letter in Spanish explaining reasons for wanting to take the course to Académica Sydney: prof2syd@cervantes.es on or before the - 31 May Quota of students: Students will have access to DELE exams at the same tariff as those attending Instituto Cervantes courses: DELE exams 2 : - Registration for B2: AUD - Registration for C1: AUD Learning Material: - For each course module, students will be given a folder of work, suggested readings, activities and other learning resources. 1 We will assess cases in which the requirements are not met but the candidate still wishes to take the course according to information provided in the cover letter. 2 Rate approved for 2015 by the Board of Directors.
