2 Spanish at USF The mission of the department of World Languages at the University of South Florida is to increase international and diverse cultural and aesthetic awareness, and to provide opportunities for the enhancement of practical communication across linguistic and cultural boundaries. To this end the department offers a broad range of undergraduate courses in Spanish for students at every level from beginning to advanced, including native speakers of Spanish. Why Spanish? An undergraduate major or minor in Spanish/Hispanic Studies builds competencies in speaking, reading, and writing the Spanish language which will open communication channels with the more than 350 million native speakers of Spanish who reside in 21 different countries. Spanish is today one of the world s most spoken languages. It is the mother tongue of populations in three different continents Europe, the Americas, and Africa. It ties cultures from the northern Atlantic to the Pacific Rim and from the Pyrenees in Spain to Patagonia in the southern tip of Argentina. It is one of the most used languages in international business and on the Internet. In the United States, Hispanics, many of whom speak Spanish at home, are the fastest growing ethnic group. There is an increased demand for Spanish language media of all types television, radio, and print media such as newspapers and magazines. In today s multicultural, global economy knowledge of the Spanish language and the culture of the Spanish speaking countries is an invaluable asset. Spanish in the United States The ties between the United States and the Spanish-speaking world are long standing and date back to the Spanish voyages at the end of the 15th century. The encounter between Spain and the indigenous inhabitants of the New World is a recurring theme in cultural manifestations of the Spanishspeaking world. In the United States, residents of Arizona, California, Nevada, Montana, New Mexico, and Texas are well aware of the Spanish origin of the names of the states where they live. The student of Spanish/Hispanic Studies will come to understand through investigation of Hispanic literature, film, music, and other artistic manifestations the circumstances that gave distinctive character to English speaking North America and the Spanish speaking nations of the Caribbean, Mexico, Central and South America. 1

3 Literature of the Spanish-speaking world Don Quijote de la Mancha (1605) and Gabriel García Márquez Cien años de soledad (1967) have become landmarks of world literature. Authors from the Spanish-speaking world have been recognized with several Nobel prizes in literature, among them Octavio Paz (Mexico, 1990), Camilo José Cela (Spain, 1989), Gabriel García Márquez (Colombia, 1982), Vicente Aleixandre (Spain, 1977), Pablo Neruda (Chile, 1971), Juan Ramón Jiménez (Spain, 1956), and Gabriela Mistral (Chile, 1945). Authors of Hispanic origin living in the United States have also created a rich literary tradition with fluid linguistic boundaries that alternate between Spanish and English. Spanish Language Film In addition, Spanish language cinema has frequently taken top honors in the category of Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars: Belle Èpoque (Trueba, Spain), The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (Buñuel, Spain), The Official Story (Puenzo, Argentina), All about My Mother (Almodóvar, Spain), and The Sea Inside (Amenábar, Spain). Hispanic literature has been a rich source of inspiration for film, from the 1499 La Celestina (brought to the screen in 1996) to the 1985 cinematic version of Manuel Puig s novel The Kiss of the Spider Woman (El beso de la Mujer Araña) and the 2007 film of Mexican Guillermo Arriaga based on his own novel, The Night Buffalo (El búfalo de la noche). History and Culture of the Hispanic World The rich musical, culinary, and artistic traditions of the Hispanic world have been fundamental to creating and developing new forms of cultural expression throughout the western world, including the United States. The advanced study of languages and cultural contexts will promote a deeper understanding of the historical, literary and sociopolitical circumstances that have produced and continue to produce such expressions. The student who is able to read and comprehend texts in the original language, or understand the history behind visual artistic expressions such as the work of the Mexican muralists will have a decided advantage. 2

4 Career Paths for the Spanish Major and Minor A bachelor s degree in Spanish/Hispanic Studies can lead to career paths in public and government affairs business, advertising, marketing broadcasting, journalism service professions o education o criminal justice o social work o public health o paralegal work Nuestros servicios en español... Developing both linguistic and cultural competence in Spanish, the second most spoken language in the United States and the fourth in the world, is a decided advantage one which the degree in Spanish/Hispanic studies will give you.
