2 Focus on Grammar FSEGR (semester course) This is an interdisciplinary course offered to students from all degree programs at the university. It can be taken in any semester of studies, depending on the specific degree requirements. It can also be taken as an elective course. This course is taught as a weekly course in the morning during the semester. Regular attendance is required. ECTS Points 2 Pre-registration is required for all IFS language courses. Detailed information can be found on the IFS website: The course is taught both by staff and adjunct instructors. The grade given in this course is based on a 60-minute exam. Grade: Pass/Fail The aim of the course is to help students develop and improve their written and spoken grammar skills. Content-based and interactive classroom activities provide the framework for the students to systematically apply and expand on the grammatical structures. The course contents are based on the levels B1/B2 of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages): Curriculum tenses modal verbs (must, have to, need to, may, might, should) 1 st and 2 nd conditional adjectives and adverbs questions prepositions Additional topics may be added at the discretion of the instructor. Course books or individual materials may be used at the discretion of the instructor.

3 Professional English B1 FSEB1 (semester course) or FSB1E (two-week pre-term course) This is an interdisciplinary course offered to students from all degree programs at the university. It can be taken in any semester of studies, depending on the specific degree requirements. It can also be taken as an elective course. This course is taught as a two-week intensive course during the lecture free period and as a weekly course in the afternoons during the semester. The curriculum for intensive courses and extensive courses is identical. Regular attendance is required. ECTS Points 4 CEFR Level This course is on level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR): Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans. Prerequisites CEFR Level A2 Pre-registration is required for all IFS language courses. 4 Curriculum B1 GRAMMAR present (simple, continuous) present perfect (simple) past (simple, continuous) future (will, going to) modal verbs (must, have to, need to, may, might, should) 1 st and 2 nd conditional adjectives and adverbs if vs. when asking questions VOCABULARY Vocabulary and phrases on a B1 level COMMUNICATION SKILLS Telephoning getting through, taking and leaving a message, making and changing arrangements, asking for information and handling complaints Writing formal and informal writing (including awareness of register) job applications (résumé and letter of application) s Participating in a meeting asking for and giving opinions, agreeing and disagreeing, interrupting and clarifying Presenting the language of presentations; 5-minute presentation on a business or technical topic of the student s choice (e.g. a company profile, a new market segment, description of a technical device or product) READING AND LISTENING SKILLS Texts and listening activities (audio- and video-segments) which address both business-oriented and technically-oriented topics of general interest. Course books may be used at the discretion of the instructor.

5 Professional English B2 FSEB2 (semester course) or FSB2E (two-week pre-term course) This is an interdisciplinary course offered to students from all degree programs at the university. It can be taken in any semester of studies, depending on the specific degree requirements. It can also be taken as an elective course. This course is taught both as a two-week intensive course during the lecture-free period and as a weekly course in the afternoons during the regular semester. The curriculum for intensive courses and extensive courses is identical. Regular attendance is required in all courses. ECTS Points 4 CEFR Level This course is on level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR): Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialization. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options. Prerequisites CEFR Level B1 Pre-registration is required for all IFS language courses. 7 Business English C1 FSEC1B (semester course) or FSC1BE (two-week pre-term course) This is an interdisciplinary course offered to students from all degree programs at the university. It can be taken in any semester of studies, depending on the specific degree requirements. It can also be taken as an elective course. This course is taught both as a two-week intensive course during the lecture-free period and as a weekly in the afternoons during the semester. The curriculum for intensive courses and extensive courses is identical. Regular attendance is required. ECTS Points 4 CEFR Level This course is on level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR): Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer text, and recognize implicit meaning. Can express himself/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressing. Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Can produce a clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors, and cohesive devices. Prerequisites CEFR Level B2 Pre-registration is required for all IFS language courses. The grade given in this course is based on the company simulation project including an in-class presentation and a 120-minute final examination including listening comprehension at the end of the semester.

8 Curriculum Business English is an interdisciplinary course which develops the language used for business at an advanced level. ENTREPRENEURIAL BUSINESS SIMULATION Using the method of learning by doing the curriculum comprises an entrepreneurial business simulation where student groups systematically design and develop their own small companies over the course of a semester. Students come up with a variety of ideas when creating their fledgling company, such as a green gym, an innovative technical product, an all-natural energy drink, an event management company, a consulting firm, a delivery service, an online e-commerce website, a new app, and more. Highlights of the course include the marketing research and development of a publicity campaign, a simulated trade fair, the recruitment process, and the final presentation to potential investors. SPEAKING With a focus on fluency building, each step of the simulation is accompanied by relevant speaking activities where students work in teams discussing their company development. VOCABULARY Each step of the simulation is accompanied by relevant vocabulary acquisition through reading and listening comprehension (audio and video) activities, as well as pair, group and whole class discussions of the topics. Topics normally include: general economics company structure marketing advertising negotiations trade fairs reporting sales & presenting graphs phrases for writing s recruitment accounting and basic financial statements additional topics at the discretion of the instructor PRESENTING A component of the curriculum involves an assessed presentation where the student groups present their company to potential investors (i.e. the other student groups). The presentations could include such topics as; history, structure (organigram), mission and vision, main products/services, main markets, marketing research results, research and development, marketing & advertising strategy, sales reports, human resource practices, financial situation, corporate social responsibility, innovation strategy, supply chain management, corporate governance, ethical business practices, SWOT analysis of company, etc. READING AND LISTENING Additional topics may be added, at the discretion of the instructor. A course reader of printed materials to accompany the classroom activities.

9 Technical English C1 FSEC1T (semester course) or FSC1TE (two-week pre-term course) This is an interdisciplinary course offered to students from all degree programs at the university. It can be taken in any semester of studies, depending on the specific degree requirements. It can also be taken as an elective course. This course is taught both as a two-week intensive course during the lecture-free period and as a weekly course in the afternoons during the regular semester. The curriculum for intensive courses and extensive courses is identical. Regular attendance is required in all courses. Curriculum Technical English is an interdisciplinary course which introduces and practices the structures common in technical writing and the sub-technical terminology commonly used, for example, in the New Scientist, Scientific American, or the technical sections of the Economist. Students give a presentation on a technical subject. For example, if the focus is on automotive technology, presentations can deal with either a technical, an environmental, or a safety aspect. Reading texts are about such areas as architecture and construction, electrical engineering and electronics, mechanical engineering and mechatronics, and energy and environmental issues etc. Listening skills are tested by answering questions about video clip or a short presentation given by the instructor. A course reader of printed materials is used to accompany classroom activities.

10 Advanced English Conversation FSEAEC (semester course) This course is offered to students from all degree programs at the university. It can be taken in any semester of studies, depending on the specific degree requirements. It can also be taken as an elective course. This course is taught as a weekly course in the morning or afternoon during the semester. Regular attendance is required. ECTS Points 2 Level Upper-Intermediate to Advanced Pre-registration is required for all IFS language courses. Detailed information can be found on the IFS Website: The course is taught by IFS staff and adjunct instructors. The grade given in this course is based on a final listening comprehension test and oral exam. Course Goals At the end of the course students will at an advanced level be able to: demonstrate understanding of, critique and discuss ideas delivered in talks, presentations and/or other digital media. articulate in conversation and oral presentations clearly organized ideas, arguments and supporting evidence using appropriate vocabulary. Authentic listening activities using current podcasts, Ted Talks and other online media sources which address contemporary topics for discussion.
