3 Blood-borne diseases As a healthcare professional, contracting a blood-borne disease is a risk you face during your everyday work. Contracting a blood-borne disease might mean you re still capable of working physically; however, restrictions may be imposed by regulatory/professional bodies. Whether you can still do parts of your work, or can t work at all, we offer insurance to help you keep your finances in order and maintain your lifestyle if your ability to work has been restricted. 4 Specific cover for occupational infection Our range of insurance products, available if you become sick and therefore can t work, includes MLC Occupationally Acquired HIV, Hepatitis B or C Infection insurance. This insurance specifically insures against infections acquired in the workplace such as Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Hepatitis B virus (HBV) or Hepatitis C Virus (HCV). MLC Occupationally Acquired HIV, Hepatitis B or C Infection insurance This insurance pays a lump sum if you unintentionally acquire HIV, HBV or HCV as a result of performing your normal duties in the health industry. It s only available for certain medical occupations such as doctors, surgeons, dentists, nurses and ambulance officers. Your financial adviser can help you work out if your occupation is eligible. Payment of the Occupationally Acquired Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C Benefit will not reduce any other type of Insurance you may have with MLC. This insurance ceases at the policy anniversary after age 70. Please note: you can only apply for MLC Occupationally Acquired HIV, Hepatitis B or C Infection insurance outside super. 5 Critical Illness Plus Insurance MLC Critical Illness Plus Insurance This also provides a full benefit if you contract HIV through a medical procedure or through your work. This benefit will be paid in addition to any Occupationally Acquired HIV, Hepatitis B or C Infection insurance benefit that is payable. How much insurance can you apply for? You can apply for MLC Critical Illness Plus insurance up to a maximum of $2 million. We ll also reimburse up to $5,000 for the preparation of a written financial plan by a qualified financial adviser when we ve paid you a lump sum benefit of $100,000 or more. Please note: you can only apply for MLC Critical Illness Plus insurance outside super. Please speak to your financial adviser for more information. Protecting medical and dental professionals Page 5

6 The Best Doctors medical information service As a client with MLC Critical Illness insurance, you and members of your family 1 receive access to the unique medical information service provided by Best Doctors 2. Best Doctors has been offering their unique second medical opinion service around the world for over 20 years and MLC have now helped bring it to Australia. Through their global database of 50,000 medical specialists, Best Doctors is able to offer members the opportunity to have their medical condition reviewed by another highly qualified specialist in that particular area of specialty. This service is called InterConsultation and it is completed remotely, you do not need to leave your home, nor are there any costs involved with using the service 3. Best Doctors believes that doctors and specialists are the best qualified to evaluate the experience and skill sets of other specialists, therefore they adopt a rigorous peer nomination process in order to form the database. Best Doctors has also developed a range of online services including: Online InterConsultation FindBestCare Doctor Online Multimedia library Medical issues can now be submitted online as well as over the phone. If you require medical treatment overseas, Best Doctors will arrange everything for you. Enables you to ask non-emergency medical questions of a fully qualified Australian doctor online and receive the answers you need within 48 hours. Access to an online video library which provides an easy to understand overview of over 300 medical conditions. These online services are available to the insured through MLC Critical Illness insurance and their immediate family 1, at no additional cost to you 3. Dr John Aloizos speaking on his first reaction to the Best Doctors service. I was very interested, particularly Best Doctors long history and the fact that they were working in many countries around the world. I think it was very timely. In my own work it s often frustrating not knowing, beyond my local scene, what might be best for my patients. It was like a breath of fresh air to realise that a respected company had been working in this area at such an expert level. 1 Family means you, (as the insured), your spouse and your dependent children. For Child Critical Illness insurance, this service is available only to the insured child. 2 Best Doctors isn t insurance (including health insurance) and it doesn t replace your relationship with your current doctor or medical specialist. Information about the history of Best Doctors and choice of specialists was sourced from Best Doctors. MLC reserves the right to withdraw the service at any time or to change the terms on which the service is provided. 3 When accessing the service, you may incur personal expenses such as internet access and/or faxing or mailing any completed information and consent forms to Best Doctors. 8 Other insurances available Total and Permanent Disability (TPD) insurance provides a full benefit of up to $5 million for certain occupations if you are totally and permanently disabled and can t work again. Income Protection insurance provides a monthly benefit of up to $60,000 for certain occupations to help replace part of your earnings if you are unable to work due to sickness or injury. How will a blood-borne disease be assessed under TPD insurance or Income Protection insurance? If you are infected with HIV, Hepatitis B or C, you may not be physically unable to work due to the infection, but in your professional capacity as a medical or dental specialist may risk passing it on to others under certain conditions. Because of this, you may be restricted from performing invasive or exposure prone procedures. Where restricted by an appropriate medical board from performing important occupational duties necessary to produce earnings, as a result of risks associated with your condition, we ll treat this the same as a physical inability to do those duties. This applies when we assess a TPD or Income Protection insurance claim. If you aren t restricted by an appropriate medical board but choose not to work (eg for ethical reasons) we ll consider this under the terms of your policy. This means a claim would be considered for TPD or Income Protection insurance if medical evidence indicated you were incapable of performing your duties. Please note: the extent of cover and the definitions of disability which apply will depend on the type of insurance selected and the way that insurance is structured.
