4 FSU General Information About Ferris State University has more than 14,000 students enrolled in classes on its main campus in Big Rapids, 19 off-campus sites throughout Michigan and at Ferris Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids. By offering people what they want, when and where they need it, Ferris is Michigan's "statewide university," with a transfer rate higher than any other university in Michigan, facilitated by the ease of laddering from a two-year to a four-year degree. Ferris is distinguished by its strong heritage of opportunity and career-oriented approach to education where theory meets practice, along with unique degrees that are not available at other universities in the state, region or nation. More than 180 programs, ranging from associate to doctoral degrees, are offered through eight degree-granting colleges: Arts and Sciences, Business, Education and Human Services, Engineering Technology, Health Professions, Kendall College of Art and Design, Michigan College of Optometry, and Pharmacy. The majority of Ferris' offerings are tailored with a specific occupation in mind and align directly with many occupations that are expected to experience growth across the country through The University has at least 140 degrees that align directly with in-demand occupations in the categories of business, finance and management; administrative and clerical; computer science and engineering; social service; education and training; health care practitioners; health care technology and support; protective service; and construction, production and repair. History Ferris is the only university in Michigan named after its founders, Woodbridge Nathan Ferris (twoterm Michigan governor and U.S. senator) and Helen Gillespie Ferris. It was founded in 1884 as the privately-owned Big Rapids Industrial School and provided opportunity for people who might otherwise have become lumberjacks, farm laborers and food processing workers, instead offering paths to lives of greater possibility. Ferris did not become a state institution until 1950, undergoing several name changes until becoming Ferris State University in Mission Ferris State University prepares students for successful careers, responsible citizenship, and lifelong learning. 6 FSU Office of Transfer and Secondary School Partnerships/Center for College Readiness About The Office of Transfer and Secondary School Partnerships at Ferris State University is committed to creating conditions that foster student success and promote access to high education and degree attainment by fostering successful transfer of college and articulated credit. Our department offers support and services for Post-Secondary/Community College transfer students. The Center for College Readiness, a division of the Office of Transfer and Secondary School Partnerships, facilitates Pre-College Programs for high school students. Purpose The mission of the Office of Transfer and Secondary School Partnerships is to promote, support, and complement the academic mission of the institution by working collaboratively with local schools, career and technical education centers, community colleges, universities, students, faculty, and staff. The Office of Transfer and Secondary School Partnerships and its partners create and extend transfer services and student learning opportunities outside the classroom. Woodbridge Promise College Prep Program/Summer Success Program The purpose of the Woodbridge Promise College Prep Program is to allow eligible students to: Establish credit and proficiency in mathematics, reading and English beyond the developmental level before starting postsecondary work. Enhance their admissions credentials so that they may qualify for admission to a postsecondary institution of their choice. Enhance their knowledge of core subjects to improve their ACT scores for postsecondary admission and financial aid. Complete college credits during high school to enhance their prospects for secondary completion and shorten the time to degree completion and reduce student debt. Achieve college-ready awareness by the time they graduate from high school.. 8 Woodbridge Promise Student Benefits The credit students earn may help them complete their college degree sooner, as many Woodbridge Promise courses transfer to other colleges. Taking college classes in high school may ease the transition from high school to full-time college student. Enhance a student s college admission profile. Curriculum Standards Woodbridge Promise College Prep/Summer Success Program courses have the same departmental designations, course descriptions, numbers, titles and credits as the FSU courses offered on campus. Courses reflect the pedagogical, theoretical and philosophical orientation of the sponsoring college/university departments. Site visits to ensure that courses offered through concurrent enrollment are the same as courses offered on campus. Site visits are conducted by program faculty or designee. 10 Program Organization & Partner Roles High School/Intermediate School District Responsibilities Promote the Woodbridge Promise program to students and parents Encourage students to register by the appropriate deadline Report any withdrawals, drops or issues to the Office of Transfer and Secondary School Partnerships in a timely manner Allow FSU to administer student surveys Review your class lists for accuracy and contact the appropriate the Office of Transfer and Secondary School Partnerships with any errors Ferris State Faculty Responsibilities Provide students with the agreed upon curriculum and assess the students performance according to Ferris State assessment criteria Review your class lists for accuracy and contact the appropriate the Office of Transfer and Secondary School Partnerships with any errors Provide midterm and final grades via MyFSU by the established deadlines. Notify the FSU Center for College Readiness and your department head if you will be out of class for an extended period of time (maternity leave, illness, etc.) and/or if your name or contact information changes Office of Transfer and Secondary School Partnerships Responsibilities Administer student surveys as well as surveys of high school administrators, teachers, and counselors Process student applications and registrations Withdraw/drop students as requested by the high school teacher Provide oversight for the Concurrent Enrollment program Implementing the Woodbridge Promise Program at the Secondary Level The FSU Office of Transfer and Secondary School Partnerships must be notified at least six months in advance of the anticipated start date of Woodbridge Promise College Prep or Summer Success Program. This timeframe allows Ferris State to hire appropriate instructors, process student applications, and build the courses required for the program. 9

11 Identification and Hiring of Woodbridge Promise Programs Instructors Instructors in the Woodbridge Promise College Prep Programs are considered adjunct faculty and must meet the same adjunct requirements as faculty teaching on the main campus. Please consult the Ferris State Online Employment System s job postings for specific criteria regarding Woodbridge Promise adjunct faculty positions. Woodbridge Promise program faculty will receive a teaching contract through Ferris State. Instructions for applying to be a Woodbridge Promise instructor are below: Instructors should bear in mind that the review process may take several weeks once all documentation has been received. Individuals should complete the following steps if they wish to be considered for an adjunct instructor position at Ferris. 1. Complete the online employment application at o At the bottom of the homepage, click Employment o Click on the Click here for Current Job Opportunities link at the bottom of the page. a. Select Search Jobs on the left menu. i. New applicants will need to create an account. ii. Returning applicants (who already have an account), will need to login. b. Use the Keywords field to find the appropriate job position. Type in the relevant keyword and click Search. i. For CARE 102, enter Career Exploration Adjunct Faculty in the Keywords field. 10

12 ii. Woodbridge Promise/Promesa instructors should search by the course they are applying to teach: 1. MATH READ UNIV DIST ENGL 150 c. Multiple job titles may appear once the search is complete. Select the job title(s) that list Transfer Services Center under the Department column. d. Click on Apply to this Job at the top of the job posting. e. Complete the application. i. Documents that must be attached to your application include: 1. Resume 2. Cover letter 3. Unofficial transcript(s) ii. You must also complete the three supplemental questions. 2. The Office of Transfer and Secondary School Partnerships will applicants several additional forms and documents. a. The following documents must be completed by the applicant and returned to i. Pre-College/Center for College Readiness New Instructor Application OR the Instructor Renewal Application ii. Confidential Data Security Form iii. Affiliate Information Form 3. Applicants will be notified as to whether or not the instructor has been approved to teach a University course. a. Woodbridge Promise/Promesa applicants will be contacted by the academic department b. CARE 102 instructors will be contacted by the Office of transfer and Secondary School Partnerships 4. Instructors who are approved to teach must submit their official college transcripts to complete their hiring packet. 5. Approved instructors will be sent a packet of New Hire paperwork that must be completed. 11

13 a. Any instructor being paid by Ferris must have the New Hire paperwork completed, signed, and turned into FSU no later than three days after the first date of employment. b. The New Hire paperwork must be returned through regular mail. The documents cannot be faxed or ed. c. Instructors will not be paid until all of the documentation has been received. Ferris State Resources for Woodbridge Promise Adjunct Faculty Woodbridge Promise instructors are granted access to the following FSU resources: MyFSU, FSU s academic management platform Ferris Connect, the online teaching and course management platform Microsoft 365 calendar and system Ferris Library for Information, Technology, and Education (FLITE) resources Instructor Requirements Communications Instructors should check their FSU frequently in order to receive important updates from Ferris State University. Entering Grades All Woodbridge Promise instructors must submit midterm and final grades by the established FSU deadlines. Please contact the Office of Transfer and Secondary School Partnerships for specific deadline dates. Instructions for entering grades are below. Log into MyFSU, select the Faculty & Advisors tab and find the Faculty Tools box/channel. There you will find links for Midterm Grades and Final Grades. Click the link for the grades you would like to enter. 12

14 Next, expand the Select a Term box to choose the semester for which you would like to enter grades. Click the submit button. Expand the CRN box to choose the course for which you would like to enter grades. When your class comes up, you will see a Grade column and each student has an expandable button set to None. Expand the button for each student to set the grade. When finished entering grades, click the Submit button at the bottom of the screen. Roster Verification Instructors are required to log into MyFSU on the first day of class, print out their class roster(s), verify them for accuracy, and return the roster(s) to collegereadiness@ferris.edu. An instructor must print out a class roster for each Ferris State course that he/she is teaching, verify that the roster is correct, sign the roster, and a copy to collegereadiness@ferris.edu. The roster should be printed from the instructor s MyFSU account Click on the Faculty& Advisors tab, and then select Summary Class List. 13

15 Select the course you are instructing from the drop down menu and click Submit Your class roster will be displayed. Contact the Office of Transfer and Secondary School Partnerships immediately if your class roster is not accurate. 14

16 Course Management Grades All credits offered are expressed in term hours. One semester hour of credit is granted for the successful completion of one hour per week of lecture, or two or more hours per week of laboratory training, for the period of fifteen weeks. At the end of each semester, faculty members are required to submit final course grades. Students may access their grades by using MyFSU. Official grades are available starting the Tuesday following exam week starting at 8:00 a.m. Students requiring a printed copy of their grades, can obtain it by using MyFSU, or by visiting the Timme Center for Student Services with picture ID. The following grading system and grade point values are used for all courses at Ferris State University: A (4.0), A- (3.7) B+ (3.3), B (3.0), B- (2.7) C+ (2.3), C (2.0), C- (1.7) D+ (1.3), D (1.0), D- (0.7) F (0.0) Grades of CR (Credit), NC (No Credit), AU (Audit), I (Incomplete), IP (In Progress), W (Withdrawal), and AW (Administrative Withdrawal) are not considered in computing grade point averages. Grades of WF (Withdrawal Failing) or AWF (Administrative Withdrawal Failing) are computed as a grade point value of (0.0). Unacceptable Grades The following grades are unacceptable for Woodbridge Promise and should not be used. I-Incomplete NC-No Credit IP-In Progress CR-Credit AU-Audit Do not grade a student with these marks. Submitting Grades All Woodbridge Promise adjunct faculty are required to submit mid-term and final grades through MyFSU, Ferris State s academic management platform. Assessment standards High school students who enroll in the Woodbridge Promise programs are held to the same standards of achievement as those expected of students on campus. The same grading standards are utilized in Woodbridge Promise courses as courses offered on campus. Students are assessed using the same methods as students taking college courses on campus (papers, portfolios, quizzes, labs, etc.). 15

Students must be officially registered and courses recorded on an official university transcript. Students enrolling in Woodbridge Promise courses for college credit must meet the same course prerequisites as students on campus. Student Eligibility Students interested in enrolling a Woodbridge Promise College Prep or Woodbridge Promise Summer Success Program should speak to their high school counselor. Students wishing to participate in the Woodbridge Promise College Prep Year-Long Program must meet the following eligibility requirements: Student must be entering his/her senior year of high school Recommended by high school counselor 2.50 cumulative high school GPA ACT Reading Score at or below 16 ACT Math Score between Students wishing to participate in the Woodbridge Promise Summer Success Program Program must meet the following eligibility requirements: Student must have completed his/her junior year of high school Recommended by high school counselor 2.50 cumulative high school GPA ACT Reading Score at or below 16 ACT Math Score between Students wishing to take the COMPASS assessment for Woodbridge Promise course placement may schedule a remote COMPASS test through Ferris State University. Please contact the Office of Transfer and Secondary School Partnerships at for instructions. Student Application Process Students wishing to enroll in one of the Woodbridge Promise programs should complete the free Pre- College Programs Online Application available at The student s high school counselor or registrar should the following application materials as one packet to woodbridgepromise@ferris.edu: 1. The student s current high school transcript. 2. The student s test scores (acceptable test scores include ACT, PLAN, or COMPASS). 3. The Authorization to Disclose Information form. Incomplete application packets will not be accepted. Once the student s application, transcript, test scores, and Authorization to Disclose Information form have been submitted, the Center for College Readiness will evaluate the student s eligibility for the program. 16

18 Registration Process The high school/career tech center is responsible for providing the Center for College Readiness with a list of students participating in the Woodbridge Promise cohort. These class rosters should be submitted to woodbridgepromise@ferris.edu. After the class lists have been received by the Center for College Readiness, the secondary students will be registered for their Ferris State Woodbridge Promise courses. Tuition prices are subject to change. Please contact the Office of Transfer and Secondary School Partnerships at for information regarding current tuition rates. Registration Deadlines All student applications, application packets, and registration forms should be submitted to the Center for College Readiness by the established deadlines. Please contact the Center for College Readiness for deadline dates. Late Registration Students may be added/dropped for the four-day period after initial start date of the Woodbridge Promise program. Students WILL NOT be registered for the course after the initial add/drop period. Please contact the Office of Transfer and Secondary School Partnerships for more information about the add/drop period. Student ID Cards All current FSU Woodbridge Promise students are eligible to receive an FSU student ID card. Only ID card requests from a high school/career and technical center/isd will be honored. Due to the volume of requests received for ID cards, students may not make individual requests. Drop/Withdrawal Policy and Process Add/Drop Period Once Woodbridge Promise classes start, students may be added or dropped from the program during the first four days of the term. Please contact the Office of Transfer and Secondary School Partnerships for more information regarding the add/drop periods for Woodbridge Promise. Students will not be registered for classes following the drop/add period. Please note that a drop does not impact a student s FSU academic record or university transcript. Withdrawal/Withdrawal Fail Woodbridge Promise students wishing to withdraw from the Woodbridge Promise Program following the drop/add period must have their high school submit a schedule change request to woodbridgepromise@ferris.edu prior to the last day to withdraw and receive a W. Withdraw requests made after the last date to withdraw will be recorded as a WF (Withdrawal Failing) on the student s transcripts. Please contact the Office of Transfer and Secondary School Partnerships for details regarding the last day to withdraw from the Woodbridge Promise Programs. For information on how a W and WF affects a student s college GPA, please view the Grading System & Information section of the Registration and Academic Guide available at A grade of W is issued when no more than 63% of a student s class(es) has been completed. This grade is not computed in to a student s cumulative GPA. 17

19 A grade of WF is issued when 63% or more of a student s class(es) have been completed. This grade has a grade point value of zero (0.00) and is used when computing the GPA. Withdrawing from college classes can impact a student s financial aid eligibility after high school. 20 Woodbridge Promise: Admission to Ferris State After Completing the Woodbridge Promise College Prep Program Students who enroll in the year-long Woodbridge Promise College Prep Program who meet all of the following criteria will be guaranteed admission to Ferris State University, regardless of their high school GPA and/or ACT/SAT scores. The student must complete 12 credit hours in the year-long Woodbridge Promise College Prep Program The student must earn at least a C or higher in each class offered through the Woodbridge Promise College Prep Program Woodbridge Promise: Admission to Ferris State After Completing the Woodbridge Promise Summer Success Program Students who enroll in the Woodbridge Promise Summer Success Program and meet all of the following criteria will be guaranteed admission to Ferris State University, regardless of their high school GPA and/or ACT/SAT scores. The student must successfully complete a minimum of 12 credit hours (8-9 credit hours through the Woodbridge Promise Summer Success Program and an additional 3-4 credit hours through dual enrollment or concurrent enrollment) The student must earn at least a C or higher in each class offered through the Woodbridge Promise Summer Success Program and in their dual enrollment or concurrent enrollment course(es) 19

21 Academic Honesty The University encourages a mature attitude toward learning and sound academic morale, and discourages illegitimate aids in examinations, laboratory work and homework assignments. Cheating, plagiarism and other forms of academic dishonesty including the acquisition, without permission, of tests and other academic material belonging to a member of the University community, and the sale and/or distribution of such material are in violation of University policy and subject to disciplinary action. "Cheating" includes, but is not limited to: (1) use of any unauthorized assistance in taking quizzes, tests, or examinations; (2) dependence upon the aid of sources beyond those authorized by the instructor in writing papers, preparing reports, solving problems, or carrying out other assignments; or (3) the acquisition, without permission, of tests or other academic material belonging to a member of the University faculty or staff. "Plagiarism" includes, but is not limited to, the use by paraphrase or direct quotation, of the published or unpublished work of another person without full and clear acknowledgment. It also includes the unacknowledged use of materials prepared by another person or agency engaged in the selling of term papers or other academic materials. A student who has been found to be in violation of academic misconduct may receive a failing grade in the course and any of the disciplinary sanctions outlined in the Board of Trustees policy of student responsibilities, including suspension or dismissal from the University. Attendance Policy Research has demonstrated that class attendance contributes significantly to academic achievement. It is the student s responsibility to attend class and complete the required assignments and tests. Each Ferris State University course s attendance policy is developed by the professor. The individual college classroom teacher determines consequences for absences from their class. Disability Services Students with a documented disability (physical, learning, mental, emotional) requiring a classroom accommodation should contact the Ferris State University Educational Counseling and Disabilities Services Office. The purpose of Disabilities Services is to serve and students with disabilities, empowering them for self-reliance and independence while promoting equal access to educational opportunities and programs. 23 It is expected that you involve yourself in leadership, service and/or personal development opportunities outside of the classroom as part of your comprehensive educational experience. Student Complaints All student complaints should be directed to the Director of Office of Transfer and Secondary School Partnerships. The Director will meet with the student and address the issue with the appropriate individuals at the high school and on campus at the University. Using FSU Credit High School Credit A high school may allow its students who are enrolled in the Woodbridge Promise/Promesa programs the opportunity to earn high school credit for their Woodbridge coursework. Ferris State may provide a student s Woodbridge Promise grades to the student s high school, provided that the student authorizes Ferris State to do so by completing the Authorization to Disclose Information Form. The student must include the contact information for the high school and guidance counselor on the Authorization to Disclose Information form. Grades will be sent to the high school at the conclusion of each term. Applying to FSU If a student plans to attend Ferris State University after high school, there is no need to request transcripts as the concurrent enrollment classes are already listed on his/her official Ferris State transcript. The student may complete the free online application to Ferris State at Students are also required to submit their high school transcripts and ACT and/or SAT scores. Transferring credit to another institution If the student plans to attend a college or university other than Ferris State after high school, he/she will need to have your FSU transcript sent to that institution in order to receive credit. Requesting official transcripts To request a transcript on-line: Current students can login to the Ferris State University website, click on MyFSU and enter their User Name and Password. Click on the My Academics tab and then the Transcripts and Enrollment Verification link. This will open the National Student Clearinghouse where you can enter your online request for transcripts from Ferris State University. To request a transcript in person: Students may go to Timme Center for Student Services on the Big Rapids campus to complete a transcript request form. Transcript fees: Transcripts are $5.00 per copy. Online transcript ordering through the National Student Clearinghouse carries an additional per order processing charge of $2.25 but gives the option of paying by credit card. Transcripts requested by using the Records Office ordering form are $5.00 per transcript. Payment can be made by cash, money order or check payable to Ferris State University. Immediate service transcripts have a service charge of $5.00 and are processed the same working day if the request is received before noon. For example, if a student was to order three transcripts on one 22

24 request, he/she would be charged $15 for the transcripts plus the additional flat fee of $5 to have immediate service, for a total of $20 to send the three transcripts immediate service. All transcript fees (and any express shipping fees) must be paid for at the time of request. Ferris State will not mail transcripts and then bill you nor can transcript fees be charged to your account. 25 FERPA Information Top FERPA Questions for Faculty Top FERPA Questions for Faculty 1. How can I post grades without violating FERPA? The public posting of grades either by the student's name, student identification number (Banner ID) or social security number, without the student's written permission, is a violation of FERPA. 2. How can I send grades to students without violating FERPA? Using FerrisConnect to post students grades is always the best option. In addition, instructors can notify students of their final grades via the U.S. Mail if the information is enclosed in a sealed envelope. Notification of grades via a postcard violates a student's privacy. Notification of grades via is permissible provided that you have student permission. However, there is no guarantee of confidentiality. 3. What information may I disclose to parents? Without the express, written permission of the student, parents, like all other third parties, may have access only to the student's directory information. If a student has restricted his or her directory information, then directory information is also considered confidential. Such things as progress in a course, deficiencies in a subject area, scores and grades on papers, exams, etc. are all examples of personally identifiable information. 4. How does FERPA affect letters of recommendation? Written permission of the student is required for a letter of recommendation if any information included in the recommendation is part of the "academic record" (grades, GPA and other nondirectory information). Personal observations about a student may be disclosed without the student's consent. 5. How do I properly dispose of confidential information? Dispose of all material containing confidential information - such as tests, papers, class rosters - by placing them in the University receptacle intended for the collection of material to be disposed of in a secure manner. 6. What are the consequences for violating FERPA? FERPA violations may result in the loss of federal funding for the Ferris State University. When in doubt, do not release the information and contact the Registrar at
