Component Objectives To provide the learner with the opportunity to: Identify what they want to learn and how best to learn it. Set realistic learning goals and criteria for successful learning. Recognise and access sources of learning support. 9. Learning Outcomes 1. Identify elements of a personal profile, e.g. some personal skills, attitudes, strengths and weaknesses. 2. Discuss different ways of learning. 3. Consider personal learning successes. 4. Identify elements of the preferred personal learning style. 5. Consider a learning plan, e.g. setting a target, looking at resources and necessary steps, time frame. 6. Implementing the plan. 7. Express opinions on how performance could be improved. 10. Guidelines for Teaching and Learning The tutor must refer to the learning outcomes and assessment criteria when designing tasks/activities. Factors to be considered include: The complexity of the task. The meaningfulness and familiarity of the task. The context of the task. The level of independence required. Page 2 of 7

3 Thus the tasks and assessments should: Reflect real life as much as possible. Be of relevance and interest to the candidate. Be based on a familiar topic. Be undertaken with peers, staff members, or other relevant person. Clearly provide evidence/record the learner s performance. During the delivery of the course, the learner should be facilitated to: Consider previous learning experiences. Identify strengths and limitations in relation to learning. Express preferences about learning styles. Access learning support. Produce and review a personal learning plan. When developing the learning plan, the learner should be made aware of the importance of: Planning: o Setting goals and targets. o Identifying ways of learning. o Accessing resources and supports. o Troubleshooting. Doing: o Identifying and overcoming distractions. o Time management. o Dealing with feedback. Reviewing: o Reflecting on performance. o Identifying areas for further development. Please note: It is recommended that this module be delivered as part of an integrated Programme of Work that best meets the needs of the learner. Suggested approaches to teaching and learning The following suggestions are not intended to be prescriptive or comprehensive. Teachers/tutors may wish to develop their own strategies and approaches. Directed and self-directed learning. Collaborative learning, peer teaching. Tutorials/one-to-one supported learning. Individual, paired, group work. Websites/CDs (if possible, learners should have access to a PC). Computer games/literacy and numeracy software. Page 3 of 7

4 Storytelling, brainstorming and mind maps. Use of interactive whiteboard. Practical sessions/workshops/studio. Self and peer assessment tools such as checklists, rating scales, and scoring guides. Written tests, oral tests (true/false, multiple choice, short answer). Simulated activities. Field trips. Examples of coursework/materials that may be generated Literacy and numeracy embedded materials and resources. Learner profile. Learning plans. Reflective learning journal/work log. Summary of achievement charts. Course notes/worksheets/assignments. Memory aids and ready references, e.g., laminated help sheets/wall charts of key words/ facts/mnemonics, index cards, etc. Mind maps, flowcharts, highlighted text, study notes, flash cards, etc. Records of feedback/appraisals/reviews. Assignments/worksheets. Oral and multimedia presentations. Podcasts, YouTube, TV Programmes, etc. Brainstorms, mind maps, spider grams, webs, etc. Charts and graphs. Posters/collages/models. Skills demonstrations, tutor verification. Please note: The learner should be facilitated to reflect on their learning process throughout. Page 4 of 7

5 11.a. Specific Information Relating to the Assessment Technique The assessor (teacher/tutor) is required to devise assessment brief/s for the Collection of Work. In devising the assessment brief/s, care should be taken to ensure that the learner is given the opportunity to show evidence of ALL learning outcomes. Evidence that the learner has achieved the learning outcomes may take a variety of forms including tutor verification of the learner s contribution, learner worksheets, diagrams, cloze tests, multiple choice statements, visual presentation or other appropriate evidence in the form of written, oral, graphic, audio, visual or any combination of these. Any digital, audio or visual evidence must be provided in a suitable format. All of the evidence must be retained in the learner s assessment portfolio. Collection of Work Assessment Technique 100% The Collection of Work must include the following: 1. Learner Profile Identification of 3 current skills, talents, knowledge, etc. Identification of 2 personal values and attitudes and/or 2 personal strengths and weakness that either promote or inhibit effective learning. Identification of 2 examples of prior successful learning experiences. Identification of 2 motives for achieving learning targets. 2. Learning Plan based on the Learner Profile which identifies: 3 learning targets/objectives relevant to achievement of full Level 2 Certification. 2 learning targets/objectives for this module. 3 ways of how best to achieve them. 3 resources/technologies/people that can support achievement of the learning targets/objectives. The Learning Plan should be structured under the following headings: o Planning. o Doing. o Reviewing. 3. Learning Journal/Log to include some details of: How learning was planned and organised. Feedback, advice and support given. 2 identified areas for further improvement. The teacher/tutor is required to devise Assessment Brief/s for the Collection of Work Page 5 of 7

6 11.b Assessment General Information The following assessment criteria may be considered in the evaluation and assessment of the learner s Collection of Work 1. Identify elements of a personal profile, e.g. some personal skills, attitudes, strengths and weaknesses 2. Discuss different ways of learning Be aware that a personal profile is a summary/checklist of skills, knowledge and abilities. Be aware of how and why a personal profile can clarify and assist in the development of a learning plan. Identify examples of information to include in a personal profile. Recognise different approaches to learning (e.g., doing, rote, self-reflection, etc.) Recognise different learning styles (e.g., visual, auditory, kinaesthetic) Consider examples of when they may have used different learning styles. 3. Consider personal learning successes Identify previous successful learning experiences (e.g., learning to ride a bike, using a new computer game, cooking a dish, etc.) Discover factors that contributed to that success. Identify personal distractions to learning. 4. Identify elements of the preferred personal learning style 5. Consider a learning plan, e.g. setting a target, looking at resources and necessary steps, time frame Identify previous approaches to learning. Identify preferred learning style(s). Identify different ways of learning to meet their learning targets. Identify an appropriate and realistic range of targets and time frames. Make achievable decisions on how to achieve targets. Recognise how to seek out and act on feedback. Identify possible learning supports, i.e., materials, technologies, resources, people, etc. 6. Implementing the plan Take responsibility for meeting targets. Recognise and record when targets have been achieved. 7. Express opinions on how performance could be improved Review progress and achievements with teacher/tutor or other appropriate person. Discuss areas for further improvement. Page 6 of 7
