1 Van Meter Elementary School Positive Behavior, Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Handbook The Mission of Van Meter Community School District is to personalize learning for each student s success, today and tomorrow. 2 PBIS IS Positive Behavior Support is a set of strategies and systems to increase the capacity of schools to reduce school disruption and educate ALL students, including those with behavior problems. PBIS IS NOT A specific practice or curriculum...it is a general approach to preventing problem behavior limited to any particular group of students...it is for ALL students New...it s based on a long history of behavioral practices and effective instructional design and strategies How is PBIS initiated? Teach expectations to ALL students Teach in the actual settings where behaviors are to occur Teach the words and the actions Build a social culture that is predictable and focused on student success We will achieve... Common language and experience Consistent expectations Consistent responses (discipline) BENEFITS Decrease problem behaviors and suspensions Increase school safety Increase connectedness to school Increase instructional engagement More instructional time Increase academic performance Better able to teach in the classroom All staff members talking the same language Consistency among all staff members Positive culture for you and your students

3 What do the expectations look like throughout the school? Classroom Listen silently with eyes on the speaker Raise hands and wait to be called on Come to class on time with all needed materials Sit up straight Turn in work on time Clean up after yourself and around your desk Walk Hands and feet to self Use materials appropriately Keep all chair legs on the floor Restroom Use voice volume 1 Use one squirt of soap Keep your feet on floor Respect others privacy Use one paper towel Do not swing on the stall doors Keep floors and wall clean Put trash in garbage cans Return to class promptly Hallway Keep voice volume 1 Go directly to destination Face forward Keep hands to your side Pick up trash and throw away Walk on the right side Keep feet on the ground and shoes quiet Keep locker neat and closed Stop at intersections Single line Follow adult s directions Hands and feet to yourself Cafeteria (During Lunch) Voice volume 1 or 2 Eat only your own food Keep hands and feet to yourself Pick up your own trash Leave the cafeteria looking nice Stay seated, with feet under table in front of you Voice volume 0 when lights flash

4 Cafeteria (Entering/Exiting) Quiet voices when entering Carry tray appropriately Keep hands and feet to yourself Voices off in hallway Throw away all your trash IMMEDIATELY quiet when lights flash Listen to directions from teacher Remain seated and raise hand when needed Keep your area clean Handle lunch card appropriately Assemblies Use voice volumes as signaled by teachers Polite applause Pay attention throughout program Remain seated Walk quietly as you enter and exit Bus Follow directions from drivers. Keep the bus clean. Stay in your assigned seat Use respectful language. School rules apply when on the bus too Keep your hands to yourself Check for all personal items before leaving the bus. Keep all parts of the body inside the bus at all times. Sit facing forward. Get out of your seat to exit only when the bus has come to a complete stop and doors open. Use only a normal talking voice or less. Keep all electronics and toys put away. No flash photography or laser pointers

5 Playground Use voice volume 0 when entering and exiting Return equipment Stay within playground boundaries Obey recess teacher Treat equipment as intended Follow game and equipment rules Line up when whistle blows Keep your fun friendly Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself Respect others play areas Walk behind recess teacher Get permission to leave playground Play on field only with permission Playground (End of Recess) Line up when whistle blows Bring equipment inside Walk in straight line Voices off in building Share equipment with others Keep hands and feet to yourself Walk on sidewalk Recess Clothing Guidelines for Cooler Weather The guidelines for proper winter wear vary from level to level depending upon the needs of the children. Please be sure that children come prepared for outside recess. Remember that Iowa weather is variable; children should come prepared for the worst every day. Temperature / Weather Conditions All temperatures include wind chill. warm days, below 50 F Clothing required / information jacket, hat soggy, wet conditions boots, jacket, hat definite rain stay inside snowy or cold (below 32 F) below 10 F hat, heavy coat, gloves are required every day; boots and snow pants are required to play in snow covered areas stay inside

6 How do We Celebrate the Positive Behavior of our Students? One of our Bulldog Beliefs, Be Respectful, is taught and reinforced with the idea of filling a bucket. Have You Filled a Bucket Today?: A Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids is a book written by Carol McCloud and David Messing. The concept of bucket filling is an effective metaphor for encouraging kind and considerate behavior as well as teaching the benefits of positive relationships to children. School Wide Celebrations 1. Classroom Bulldog Belief Coupons when a classroom has done a great job of demonstrating the Bulldog Beliefs, the principal, assistant principal, Superintendent, and/or the K-12 Dean of Students can deliver a Bulldog Belief Coupon. Once a class hits the target number of coupons earned, the whole class can choose a reward delivered by the building principal. 2. Announcement Reminders will be used to support the Bulldog Beliefs and share positive comments written by teachers about the students in our school. This ties with Fill A Bucket that happens in classrooms as well. 3. School Wide Goals Goals will be set for the entire school to reach. Every child can help us reach our school goal and we know each child can contribute in different ways. Goals are set to match a particular Bulldog Belief as shown to be a need for attention by our behavior data. A goal chart is right outside the elementary office so all students can see the progress our entire building is making towards the Bulldog Belief Goal. Classroom Celebrations 1. Tickets - handed out to individual student who are caught in the act of demonstrating the Bulldog Beliefs. When a classroom reaches their goal for number of tickets, a classroom wide celebration occurs. Each grade level has their own theme for the goal to provide more age appropriate rewards. Classes use their behavior data to see if a particular Bulldog Belief should be focused on. 2. Fill the Bucket Daily Comments students can write a quick note to fill a bucket and put it in their classroom bucket. These comments are read each day by the teacher and given to the student to take home. Guidance lessons introduce the concept of filling a bucket, and are used to reinforce the Bulldog Beliefs as needed. Individual Student Success 1. Tickets once an individual student reaches the goal for tickets, he/she may select a classroom prize. These vary from teacher to teacher and by age level.

Standing on furniture Bomb threats Threatening an unsafe action (i.e. hurting self/others)
